Article written by Bernard Whitt and originally printed in The Ashland Independent newspaper. West Liberty, KY----James Whitt, a native of Tazewell Co. VA and a resident of this county for the last 83 years, lays claim to the title of the oldest citizen of Morgan County. He is one hundred years, three days old today (May 11th). Born on Clinch River in Tazewell County, VA February 9th 1835, Mr. Whitt, when 17 years old, came with his parents, James Madison Whitt and Rebecca Day Whitt and his three brothers, Leck, Will and Ingram Whitt and his two sisters, Mrs. Emberset Reed and Mrs. Poll Reed, to Magoffin county thence to this county where they finally settled. The Whitt family came through Pond (Pound?) Gap and down the Big Sandy River to Paintsville and over to Salyersville and on down the Licking River to West Liberty. James and one of his brothers, Ingram enlisted in the Union Army and served throughout the Civil War. They were members of Company G, 24th Regiment, KY Infantry. They served under Capt. Hedge and Col. Lewis B. Grigsby. James was one of the soldiers who, under General Garfield, drove the Confederates across the Cumberlands and out of the Big Sandy alley. He was in the battle of Ivy Mountain Nov. 8-9, 1861, and was also in the battle of Crab Orchard. He said later, he was in the campaign around Vicksburg when Grant broke the Confederacy into two parts. He said he was then transferred to the east and was in campaigns there. Ã´I never asked for a pension,Ã¶ Mr. Whitt said, Ã´and I have never received any compensation from the government since the Civil War.Ã¶ At the close of the War Between the States, Mr. Whitt returned to his home, and there he met and married Miss Angeline Amyx. To this union ten children were born, seven sons and three daughters. Three of the sons and three daughters are still living. The sons are, Bob Whitt of West Liberty and Tom and Andy Whitt, both of Wonnie, Magoffin County. The daughters are Mrs. Alice Perry of Blaze, Morgan County, Mrs. Minta Patrick of Wrigley, Morgan County and Mrs. Emma Crace of Richmond, KY. There are five generations of the Whitt family living. Mr. Whitt has been a farmer all his life, with the exception of the time he served in the army during the Civil War and 38 months he spent in Cincinnati when he helped build the first bridge across the Ohio River at that point. * Mr. Whitt does not smoke, but he occasionally chews tobacco. Members of his family say that they saw him angry only once and that was when he tipped over a churn of milk on the floor. He has all his faculties and he is in almost perfect health. The writer drove ten miles to get to talk to him and to get the above photograph. As it was over a poor country road I could only get my car within a mile of the aged manÃ†s daughterÃ†s home. He was at the time living with her. After the interview Mr. Whitt walked the mile back to the car and jumped across small streams with the agility of a man 45 to 50 years old. Mr. Whitt's son, Bob, accompanied me to interview his father and when we arrived it was about eight o'clock in the morning. We found him out cutting wood. There were about two wagonloads of wood, which he had cut and stacked. Mr. Whitt said that he attributed his good health and long life to work and keeping happy. He says he does not worry nor get disturbed about anything. I take everything calmly, is the way he put it. I cut wood, he said as he dropped his axe and mopped his brow when we approached him, Ã´each morning until I get tired and then I quit. He said the he felt much better when he worked and that he believed it kept him in good health. Mr. WhittÃ†s eyesight is good. He reads without glasses. In fact, he says he has never worn glasses. Mr. Whitt said that when he moved into the North Fork country where the village of Wrigley is situated, there was not a foot of land cleared and that it was necessary to cut roads for even the horses to travel. He said the country abounded with squirrels and other game and he recalled that his son Bob, when a youngster, killed nine pheasants one morning before breakfast. On our return trip to West Liberty Mr. Whitt accompanied us and he observed that the farmers were late in getting in their crops. Mr. Whitt has lived to see the United States grow in population, in industry, and to become one of the greatest powers in the world. When he was a boy there were no telephones, no electric lights, no airplanes, only a few railroads, and no one ever dreamed of the radio. He says that he is thankful that he has been permitted to attain a ripe old age and to live in an age when great things do happen. James Whitt died 4 January 1938 in Morgan County, KY and was buried in Magoffin County, KY. He was the son of James Madison Whitt (1810 VA-1855 KY) and Rebecca Day (1812 VA-1854 KY). His paternal grandparents were Richard Whitt III b. 1778 and Elizabeth Smallwood Baxter. His maternal grandparents were Joseph Powell Day (1776-1856) and Rhoda Cox (b? -d.1827). *Most likely the Robeling Suspension Bridge near Paul Brown Stadium and Great American Ball Park. 29785	Unsourced Hugh, the oldest son of John and Eleanor, was born on board the ship in which his parents sailed for America, during a protracted quarantine. At what port the landed we are unable to say. their home was for 12-13 years in Lancaster County, PA, then they came south and permanently settled in Steele Creek, NC. In a few years the country was involved in the 'Revolutionary War', and Hugh and his brother Robert enlisted as soldiers and served through the war. They endured many of the harships of war, including a capture and brief imprisonment at Camden, SC, but in the day of battle their 'heads were covered,' and they lived to enjoy the blessings of peace and liberty. Hugh was married on the 11th of January 1780, to Martha Robison, of Mecklinburg County, NC. Martha was connected with that numerous family of Robisons, the early settlers of Sugar Creek, NC. Hugh was a man much esteemed in his day, and was noted for his strict punctuality in attending the public ordinances of the church. His home was some thirteen miles distant from the church in which he worshiped two-thirds of the time, but he was usually among the first arrivals at the place Sabbath morning. He died after a lingering sickness, as we learn from the diary of Martha Harris, his brother John's wife. "Hugh Harris, senior departed this life upon the 11th day of August 1825, after an illness of about ten months, which he endured with Christian patience and resignation." Hugh died in the seventy-first year of his age. Martha R. Harris, his wife, was born December 1754, and died 25 January 1834, aged eighty years. The remains of both lie in the cemetery at Big Steele Creek, Mecklinburg County, NC. Hugh's home was one mile east of Lower Steele Creek Church, near the public road, known then -- and also at the present day, as 'The Nation Ford Road,' Nation Ford being on the Catawba River. Also at my wifes death my land is to be appraised & that my son Hugh shall have the first refusal of it at the value set upon it. Also that the remainder of my Estate be equally divided between my children Except my son John that if he has no legal offspring his is to receive only half a share of what is coming to his brothers. Also that share which would fall to my son Robert shall be equally divided between his children only that his son John shall take two shares of what is coming to his brothers & sisters. 29800	Until someone contacted me questioning the age of Samuel Doak, b. ca 1714 to be the father of Mary, I had overlooked the age feasibility. I blame old eyes and an overworked brain. This Mary Doak was the sister of Samuel Doak. She was the immigrant ancestor for her branch, the daughter of James Doak. I had her mixed up with her niece Mary Doak, the daughter Samuel Doak and Jane Mitchell, who married Abner Weatherby. To add to the confusion, there was another niece named Mary Doak, the daughter of Robert Doak, brother to Mary and Samuel, who married Robert Breckinridge. And to make it even more perlexing for their descendants, there were at least two John Tates, both from Augusta Co. VA living at the same time. One married Mary Doak and the other one married Mary Mitchell [sister to Samuel Doak's wife Jane Mitchell] who had several offspring migrate to Russell Co. VA. These are my Tate ancestors. They all came from Ulster, Northern Ireland through Pennsylvania into Augusta Co. VA. They either intermarried and/or were neighbors. They named their children after brothers and sisters to deliberately confuse their descendants. So you may have several Samuel Doaks, John Tates as grandfather, father, son, uncle, brother, or cousin. There is evidence based on Augusta Co. land and probate records that indicate Mary's maiden name as Doak. The following record indicates Samuel Doak, is the brother of Mary. This Samuel Doak in his will extract names his "brother-in-law John Finley [husband of Samuel's sister Thankful] and John Tate to advise executors." This John Tate is not also named as a brother-in-law, but not having seen the original will and only various abstracts or transcription, it's possible a "s" was left off. The John Tate who married Mary Doak, Samuel's brother-in-law is believed to have died ca 1747. However the John Tate who married Mary Mitchell, sister to Samuel's wife Jane, was living. I believe this is the John Tate named as an adviser to the estate. In addition Mary Doak Tate's sons John Tate, Jr. and William as witnesses to their uncle's will. WILL ABSTRACT Augusta County, Virginia - Will Book 4, Pgs 497-500 5th November, 1771. Saml Doak's will, farmer--To wife, Jane; to daughter, Elinor, unmarried; to wife, to have disposal of all household furniture at her Pleasure to her 3 daughters, Elinor, Mary, Isbel; to son, John; to oldest son, David, plantation David now lives on as Robert Doak laid it off; to son, Samuel, plantation at head waters of Rockfish in Amherst; to son, John, plantation testator lives on; to son, Robert, tract testator formerly lived on in Rockfish, joining Capt. Crawford; daughters, Jane and Elizabeth. Executors, wife Jane, son David, son-in-law Wm. Brown. Brother-in-law John Finley and John Tate to advise executors. Teste: John and James Mitchel, William Tate, John Tate, Jr. Proved, 19th May, 1772. by James Mitchel and the Tates. David Doack qualifies with John Tate. Nathaniel Steel. VA records show numerous links among the Tate and Doak families, indicating close relationships between them. However, DNA is providing clarity for her ancestry indicating she descended from Samuel/James Doak.
