23251	OBITUARY FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Aug. 29, 1931-- Funeral services for Roanna(sic) Rutledge, eight-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Rutledge of Buckingham, were held yesterday afternoon. The child died at midnight Wednesday at the home following a month's illness. The Rev. I. H. Marks, pastor of the Church of God, officiated at the funeral service, burial was at Buckingham. 23252	OBITUARY Freda Gay (Rowe) Hays, 60, cherished wife of 43 years to Roger D. Hays of 4182 Old Greenville Road, Greenville entered her heavenly home on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in the comfort of her home surrounded by the love and warmth of her family. She was born August 29, 1950, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of Janie (Lawhorn) Rowe of Lofton and the late Joseph Franklin Rowe. Freda was a lifelong member of Mt. Joy Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Prior to her long courageous battle with Breast Cancer she was employed with Parker Compound Bows, Inc. where she made many good friends. She was also a homemaker which was a career that fulfilled her passion. No house ever felt more like a home with her endearing love shining in every corner. Her love for gardening, cooking, and canning was enjoyed by many. Her loving gentle touch was never more evident than in her flower gardens, which grew radiantly and majestically, matching her kind and compassionate soul. Freda was a vibrant spirit who lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed playing slot machines, which gave her "therapy" and peace of mind during her illness. She was a loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Her greatest love of all was her family. In addition to her husband and mother, family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Michael Mahon of Stuarts Draft; and a son, Brian Hays of Greenville. Her long awaited grandson, Seanthomas Patrick Mahon, entered her life in June of 2010 and brought her much pride and fulfillment not to mention "natural medicine". She is also survived by beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, Reda Kay (Rowe) and Jimmy Hendricks, Shirley (Rowe) and Wayne Wolfe; special brothers and sister-in-law, Roger Rowe, and Pete and Alicia Rowe. Freda and Reda were blessed enough to share a true twin connection and life-time bond that will never end. She also leaves her many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews who all held a special place in her heart. Her "little princesses" and her "little men" will always hold onto the precious memories of their aunt Freda. A special bond was also shared with her husband's family. The family will receive friends at Henry Funeral Home on Friday, April 22, 2011, from 7 until 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2011, in Mt. Joy Presbyterian Church in Lofton by the Rev. Clifford D. Caldwell. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her nephews and great nephews, Vernon Rowe, Kevin Wolfe, Keith Hendricks, Darin Powell, Scott Campbell, Jeff Eckard, Jimmy Hays, David Walters, and Tommy Bowles. 23254	OBITUARY Freemont Evening Tribune, Freemont, NB; 17 August 1916 MRS. WALLACE SMITH Resident of Fremont for Many Years Answers Final Call After an illness of about two years, Mrs. Wallace Smith, wife of a well-known North Western engineer, died at a hospital in Omaha last evening at 5:10. Mrs. Smith's condition had been serious for several weeks. A post mortem was determined upon, as a means of establishing the cause of her illness. It was to be held in Omaha today. The body will be brought to Fremont this afternoon over the North Western. Mrs. Smith was born in September, 1863, in Indiana. Her parents afterwards resided in Fairbury, Neb. From there Mrs. Smith, whose name was then Leora Bell Rice, came to Fremont in 1890. She was married to Mr. Smith February 23, 1891. Their residence in Fremont since that time has been continuous. Mrs. Smith won many warm friends, who regarded her highly. A few years ago she united with the Presbyterian church. The immediate surviving relatives are the husband and one daughter, Mrs. Hope Nelson. There are three brothers, residing in Dixon, Ill., Princeton, Mo., and Evergreen, Colo., and one sister residing at Trenton, Kas. 23255	OBITUARY From Find A Grave William Wilson Sterrett, 90, of Independence, Missouri, a former Slater resident, died Sunday June 20. 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence. Born June 15, 1909, in Slater, he was the son of the late Joseph Burks and Elizabeth Allen Caldwell Sterrett. On December 19, 1936, in Washington, D.C., he married Rachel W. Finch and she survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Burks Sterrett of Myrtle Point, Oregon and James Roger Sterrett of Balzac, Alberta, Canada; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister. Mr. Sterrett was a 1926 graduate of Slater High School and a 1930 graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. He attended the University of Missouri - Columbia for two years and graduated from George Washington Law School in Washington, D.C., in 1935. He served as Deputy Circuit Clerk of Saline County form 1932 - 34. He passed the Bar in December 1934 and practiced law in Saline County for 53 years at Sterrett Law Office in Slater. He was secretary to Congressman William Nelson in Washington, D.C., from 1938 - 1940. He was with the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C., for two years, the War Production Board for a year and served in the Air Transport Command for two. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Sterrett returned to Slater in 1946 where he served as City Attorney from 1946 - 1981. He served as Chairman of the Slater County Red Cross and on the Slater Public School Board from 1948 - 1952. He was a member, deacon, trustee, elder and former Sunday School Teacher at the Slater Presbyterian Church. He was President of the Saline County Bar Association form 1983 -1991 and Vice-President from 1991 - 1993. He served on the board of directors of the State Bank of Slater for 53 years. He was a longtime member and past President of the Slater Rotary Club from which he received the Slater Club's first Paul Harris Fellow in 1995. He was a Boy Scout Counselor beginning in 1950 and received the Missouri Valley College Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1996. He was also a longtime member of American Legion Post #78 of Slater. 23257	OBITUARY From Find A Grave "TAPS" FOR CIVIL WAR VETERAN Death of Geo. W Rice of Orton Twp. Occurred Last Sunday Evening George W. Rice, a Civil War veteran, who for fifteen years has been a highly respected resident of Orton township, this county, died at his home Sunday evening, December 9, at 9:15 o'clock. The direct cause of his death was pleurisy, but he had been declining in health for months and his friends realized that the end was but a short time away. George W. Rice was born in the state of Illinois June 15, 1839, and was therefore over 78 years of age. He came to Minnesota when a young man, settling at Northfield, where at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he enlisted in Company "F", 8th Regiment of Minnesota Volunteers, and served with honor throughout the war. He was under General Thomas and participated in the terrible battles waged in Tennessee. Later he was a member of the troops who went to the Bad Lands in South Dakota to subdue an Indian tribe which caused much trouble after the war. Some years after the war he came to Todd county where he lived several years and then came to Orton township fifteen years ago where he had since made his home. Deceased was an exemplary citizen, a kind and loving husband and father and he numbered his friends in this part of Wadena county by the hundreds. "Dad" Rice, as he was affectionately called by his friends, was a true blue patriot and never did he think of himself too old to serve his beloved country. He risked his life hundreds of times and suffered untold hardships during the Civil War and always said that he would do it again to defend "Old Glory" which should be an inspiration to all young men in the present time of danger to our glorious nation. Deceased is survived by his second wife and nine children, six sons and three daughters. The funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon and interment was made in the McClure cemetery in Lyons township. Rev Smith preaching the funeral sermon. He was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and was the son of William Jack "Bill" McCann and Betty F. Barber McCann of Bluefield, Virginia. He was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County and was the teaching professional and manager at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, Virginia. He was the owner and operator of Precision Golf in Bluefield, Virginia and was an avid bowler. He was a Graham High School Class of 1977 graduate and received his degree in Business Management from Bluefield State College. He was the former teaching professional at Tazewell County Country Club where he was devoted to the Jr. Golf program. He enjoyed the game of golf immensely and was devoted to his profession. He took pride in teaching children how to play golf and spent numerous hours on the driving range with golfers all over the area. Born on April 24, 1950 in Muenchen, Germany, she was one of four children born to Kenneth Grayson and Anne (Price) Swaney. She resided at the State Hospital in Parsons, Kansas from 1958 to 1970. She then resided at the St. Paul Manor in St. Paul Kansas. In 1992, Carole moved to the Focus Developmental Center in Winfield where she lived until 1998 and the moved to Southwind where she has resided since. Carole loved arts and crafts and spending time with her friends and caregivers. She was the widow of Jacob Carlyle Hammond and was predeceased by two brothers, Posey Saul and William Saul and two sisters, Emily Flora and Mary Flora. Born January 12, 1920, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Eliza Webb Saul. Mrs. Hammond was a longtime member of Williamson Road Church of the Brethren. She was an active member of the Golden Colonels Alumni of William Fleming High School. A devoted mother and grandmother, who doted on her grandchildren, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Wayne Cramer of Daleville; sons and daughter-in-law, David and Velvet Hammond and Phillip Hammond, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Neal Cramer, Erika C. 23267	OBITUARY From Find A Grave Delta Marie Giddens, 82, daughter of Charlie Sillyman and Laura Fowler Sillyman, was born July 17, 1925, at Bucyrus. She died Jan. 6, 2008, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. She grew up at Licking and went to high school at Raymondville. She married Almon Giddens Jan. 16, 1943, in Kansas City, Kan. They had three children. While living in Peoria, they cared for foster children. Mrs. Giddens was a member of the Bucyrus Baptist Church, where she taught the adult classes. She was active as a clown during the Emmett Kelly Clown festivals. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leonard and William Sillyman; two sisters, Bessie Sillyman and Juanita King; a half sister, Opal Hinkle; and a grandson. 23268	OBITUARY From Find A Grave Eugene D. Ferrell, 69 of 821 1/2 Knight died early this morning at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City where he had been a patient since April 20, 1964. Mr. Ferrell was born at Vale, South Dakota on March 26, 1895 and came to the Broadus area in 1924 from South Dakota. In 1945 he moved to Miles City where he was employed in the car department of the Milwaukee Railroad. Mr. Ferrell was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Railway Carmen. 23275	OBITUARY From Find A Grave Harold Cleveland Burnham, age 84, of Newnan, died Monday, April 27, 2009 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Harold was born May 5, 1924 to the late Gordon and Rada Shinn Burnham. The Burnham family, whose numbers were considerable, had come to Coweta County when farming became increasing difficult and the textile mills were providing steady jobs that may not have paid much, but there was money every week and if the families ran short, the company store could tide them over. When World War II came along, Harold, like many of the Burnham men, answered the call to service and Harold joined the Army. Although he never talked much about his service experience, his Purple Heart spoke volumes about his dedication to the cause. In his 84 years, Harold's life was one of hard work, family and friends. Harold was married to Sara Nell Young and she preceded him in death in 1994. Their only son, Ronnie Burnham, preceded him also in 2005. In addition, four of his siblings predeceased him. Harold is survived by his daughter-in-law Donna Burnham; his grandchildren, Lindsay Burnham and Mallory Burnham and a great grandchild Lacie Howard. His surviving siblings are Hamp Burnham and Margaret Majors. Katherine Freeman has been a very dear friend to Harold these last few years. There is also a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. As all those who knew Waller are aware, he had an intense passion for driving the roads. He also enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Myrick was a WWII veteran serving with honor in the U. S. Army. He started Allied Frozen Foods in 1960 and operated it until he sold it in 1988. Mr. Myrick was a member of the Floyd Springs Masonic Lodge #167 and the Yaarab Shrine/Rome Shrine Club. As a member of the Rome Shrine Club he participated in the Shrine Motor Corp. where he served as a 2nd Lieutenant of the Truck Unit in 2012. Betty Jo was a member of the Greater Augusta Association of Realtors, in which she served in every officer's position and received numerous awards. In 1993, she was the first woman elected to the board of directors with Bank of Rockbridge and later served on the advisory board of directors for One Valley Bank and BB&T. She was a devoted Christian and member of Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church in Steeles Tavern for 48 years. Mr. Finley was born in Wilkes County on June 16, 1930, to Allen Gordon Finley, Sr. and Annie May Barnes Finley. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Finley was an Eagle Scout in Troop 36 and a scoutmaster for Troop 336. He was also a volunteer firefighter for North Wilkesboro for 35 years. He was a member of Y's Men's Club and former president of the Home Builders' Association. After retiring from home construction and real estate, Mr. Finley became a Presbyterian Lay Minister. He served as pastor for Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church from 2002 until 2007. Mr. Finley was an elder, choir member, and Sunday school teacher at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and was the founding member of Gideons International Wilkes North Camp. He was active in Habitat for Humanity, served on mission trips to Mexico and was an avid tennis player. He was a member of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. Mr. Finley was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Elmore Finley, Katherine Finley Blatt and a grandson, Cameron Finley. Carl was born May 16, 1940, in High Point, a son to the late Frank Lewallen and Elsie Samuels Lewallen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Sue Lewallen and two brothers, John and Donald Lewallen. Carl was a member of Community Baptist Church, formerly Faith Baptist Church; he served as a Deacon and volunteered his time as a serviceman to the church. He worked at several hosiery mills as a fixer and retiring from Cedar Creek in 2009. On May 1, 1964 he married the love of his life the former Mary Gromling. He was an avid sportsman and could do any task that was set before him with great skills. He will be greatly missed but, will be a great friend to the Lord. Edgar Young and the late Alva Dukes Young. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served in the European Theatre during World War II. A mainstay in the community, he worked at Southwire in Carrollton for more than 20 years and remained connected to those at the company long after he retired. He was a member and Deacon Emeritus of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he also attended the Wisdom Sunday School Class. An avid outdoorsman, he loved gardening, fishing, and simply being outside. Lovingly known as ?Papa,? his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Margaret Jones Young, of Carrollton; his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Brenda Young, of Carrollton; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Joan Young, of Bremen; and son-in-law and daughter, Joe and Ginger Stone, of Carrollton. 23298	OBITUARY From Find A Grave Mrs. Effie Rosealpha Ferrell, age 86 passed away at a local hospital Saturday afternoon. Rites will be held at the Graves Chapel Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Ferrell was born at Fairburry, Nebraska in 1863. Her dad served in the Civil War, her mother passed away when she was nine years old. When she was fifteen, she went to work as a dishwasher at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was married to George Washington Ferrell in 1880 in Colorado Springs. Two boys, Tom and Lew were born while they lived there. They moved to Sturgis, South Dakota in a wagon pulled by oxen, as a part of a wagon train. They next moved to Meade County, South Dakota in the Black Hills where Jess, Charley, Gene, Iris, George and Orlando were born. Mr. Ferrell ran a blacksmith shop there and worked on Norman Dam. They moved to Vale, South Dakota where they homesteaded starting in 1893. In 1929, they came to Broadus, Montana and had resided in Miles City, Montana the last three years. Mr. Ferrell preceded her in death ten years ago. After some years Mr. and Mrs. Ferrell separated. Nine boys and one girl were born to this union and surviving also are 17 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Five sons reside in Miles City, Charles, Eugene, Marcus Allen, George and one son, Tom Ferrell, is in the Veterans Hospital at Fort Harrison. A daughter, Iris Raaen lives at Sturgis, S. D. She was a member of several bridge clubs, enjoyed crafts, was a lover of dogs and flowers, and enjoyed the friendship of many. She was a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of the church choir. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William J. Heath and Benjamin D.
