Shirley lived her early years on Copper Creek in Scott County, VA but moved with her family to Arlington, VA in February 1968. She lived in Scott County, VA again in 1995-1996. She enjoyed being a homemaker and derived many happy hours doing arts, crafts and oil paintings of landscapes. She took great pride in her cooking and oil paintings. She taught arts and crafts in local private schools, churches and was a Cub Scout leader. She was of the Baptist faith and was a born again Christian. Her survivors include her mother, Thelma Blair Mann; husband of 51 years, Bruce D. Starnes; sons, Gordon Brent Starnes, Carter Blair Starnes; Adam Mann Starnes and fianc'ee, Lana Oswald, brother, Johnny Milburn Mann and wife, Freida, granddaughters, Savannah Hope Starnes, Nicole Carpenter and Ashley Oswald; great grandchildren, Kenneth Carpenter, Jr. and Kayla Carpenter. Ted Allen Baldwin, age 75 of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the Lonesome Pine Hospital in Norton, Virginia following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late Watts and Eunice Wade Baldwin, former Buchanan County natives. He was a miner at the Beatrice Mine in Oakwood, and later retired from Island Creek Coal Company. He was also a proud member of the UMWA Local # 1374. He spent most of his life in the Cedar Bluff area and attended the Calvary Temple Church in Richlands, Virginia. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Ola Gay Arnold; 4 brothers, Shirley, D.C., Norman and Bane Baldwin. Those remain to carry on his spirit are His loving wife, Pansy Deloris Ball of Cedar Bluff, VA; His three daughters Judy Kay Ratliff and husband, Eddie of Swords Creek, VA, Diana Lynn Cline and husband, Ricky of Raven, VA, Allene Faith Smith and husband, Craig of Wardell, VA; Sisters Ruth Meadows and husband, Ed of Ohio, Wanda Griffith and husband, Russell of Richlands, VA, Inez Kinbrell of Doran, VA; Brothers Sherman Baldwin and wife, Joy of Tazewell, VA, Marty Baldwin of Raven, VA; Eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of family of friends also survive him. Born April 11, 1919, in Hansonville in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie H. Kegley and Willie Price Kegley. She resided in Baptist Valley since 1934, where she owned and operated McGlothlin's Service Store for 50 years (1944-1994), retiring at the age of 84. She was a member of Yost Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Baptist Valley. She will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and wonderful friend to so many. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Frank McGlothlin; one daughter, Patty Love Surber; four sisters; and five brothers. Tempie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Forest and Mary Boyd Phifer. She was married May 27, 1949 to Don Patton who preceded her in death in 2006. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James, "Pip" and Cliff Phifer; and sister, Gert Brady. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dollie Virginia and Jacky Ray Davis of Nashville, TN and Melissa Ann and Larry Copeland of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren and spouses, Lauren and Chris Dowdy of Dallas, TX, Courtney and Kyle Mayfield of Nashville, TN and Ben and Hayley Mitchell of Austin, TX; seven great-grandchildren, Silas Dowdy, Leighton, Brooke and Hudson Mayfield, and Ainsley, Blakely and Jaxon Mitchell; and sister, Sue Brock of Smyrna, TN. Don and Virginia both grew up in McMinnville, and attended Central High School together, where they became high school sweethearts. They lived in North Carolina for a year while Don was in the Marines during 1953, then they moved back to McMinnville. They later moved with their family to LaFayette, GA in 1962, and then to Nashville in 1976. They retired to Altamont, TN in 1993, and lived there until Don died in 2006. Mrs. Patton did office and secretarial work for several places, including the Department of Family and Children's Services in LaFayette, and in real estate and accounting offices in Nashville. She loved to travel, especial with her husband, and they traveled all over with his job, especially out west. She also traveled to several foreign countries doing mission work (Czechoslovakia, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand). She loved gardening, pretty flowers and hummingbirds, she was a great cook, and enjoyed sharing all these things with family and friends. She especially loved doing anything with her three grandchildren, and she was lovingly called "Granny". She was very, very special to them as well as to her two daughters and their husbands, and to "Pafie", her husband of 57 years. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the chapel of Cannonsburgh Village, 312 S. Front Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37129. Friends and family will gather to visit following the service in the gazebo next to the chapel from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Worldvision.org or Second Harvest Food Bank.
