OBITUARY

York, SC - Easter Vanhook, 82, formerly of Big Stone Gap, VA died Saturday, March 11, 1995 at her residence.

Born in Osaka, VA, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Laura Gilley Tate. She had resided most of her life in Big Stone Gap before moving to York, SC three and a half years ago. She was a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church in Crackers Neck, VA and had attended Oak Grove Baptist Church, Big Stone Gap, VA.

Surviving are her husband, W. Z. Vanhook, Sr, York, SC; four sons, William Z. Vanhook, Jr and Charles T. Vanhook, both of York, SC, Marvin R. Vanhook, West Chester, PA and Commander Robert J. Vanhook, Pensacola, FL; one daughter Linda Gay Carter, Albermarle, NC; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildrn; four brothers, Woodrow Tate, Kingsport, Creed Tate and Fleet Tate, both of Big Stone Gap, VA and James P. Tate, New Paltz, NY; one sister, Ida Fraley, Big Stone Gap, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday in the Holding Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Silas Culbertson officiating.

Burial will be in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, VA.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

OBITUARY

Woodrow E. Tate, 83, Sunnyside community, Kingsport, died Thursday March 19, 1998 following a brief illness.

A native of Wise County, VA, he lived most of his life in the Sunnyside community. He was a WWII Verteran having served four years in the US Marines, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was the operator of Midway Service and Groceries for 25 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Laura Gilly Tate.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Tate, of the home; two sons and a daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Keigh (Brenda) Tate, and Rickey Tate, all of Kingsport; a grandson, Keith 'Chip' Tate, Kingsport; a sister, Ida Fraley, Big Stone Gap, VA; two brothers, Creed Tate and Fleet Tate of Big Stone; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Owens officiating.

Interment will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.

OBITUARY

BIG STONE GAP, Va. Fleet L. Tate, 90, of the Crackers Neck community, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday (June 26, 2010) at The Place in Kingsport.

He was the son of the late Peter and Laura (Gilley) Tate. He was a lifelong resident of the Crackers Neck community.

He retired from Westmoreland Coal Company, Central Supply Division, after 34 years of service. He was a member of Modern Woodmen and the Ruritan. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater.

He attended Big Springs Baptist Church in the Crackers Neck community.He was an avid fly fisherman and hunter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Grindstaff Tate; eight brothers, Guy, Elijah, Charlie, Howard, Bob, Woodrow and James Polk Tate; three sisters, Mollie Tate, Easter Tate Vanhook and Ida Tate Fraley.

Surviving are his two daughters, Kathryn Davidson and husband, Ronnie of Mount Carmel and Linda Cates and husband, Charles of Houston, Tex.; his son, Joseph Fleet Tate of New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Laura Davidson and her husband, Jason Radmacher, Jeffrey Davidson and wife, Misti, Lisa Whitman and her husband, Darryl and Kristi Johnson and her husband, Jesse; five great-grandchildren, Justin, Casey, Colby, Austin and Conner; brother-in-law, H.T. Grindstaff; three sisters-in-law, B.B. Tate, Mildred Tate and Ann Rose; and Fleet was a very special uncle to his nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cedar Ridge Freewill Baptist Church (1413 Crackers Neck Rd., Big Stone Gap, Va) in the Crackers Neck community.The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Jason Radmacher officiating.

Military rites, by local V.F.W. and D.A.V. Posts and the Virginia National Guard Honors Team, will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Davidson, Matt Cooper, John Cooper, Chase Cooper, Jesse Baker and Tessa Burton.

OBITUARY

BIG STONE GAP, Va. Ida Marie Tate Fraley, 86, of the Crackers Neck community, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (June 18, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.

She was born in Osaka, Va., the daughter of the late Peter and Laura (Gilley) Tate. She lived most of her life in the Crackers Neck community.

She attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap, where she was a member of the Loyal Ruth Sunday School Class.

She was a member of the Big Stone Gap O.E.S. #157.

Mrs. Fraley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.K. Fraley; her parents; eight brothers, Guy Tate, Elijah Tate, Charlie Tate, Howard Tate, Woodrow Tate, Bob Tate, Creed Tate and James Polk Tate; and two sisters, Mollie Tate and Easter Tate Vanhook.

Surviving are her daughter, Connie Cooper and husband, Tom of Big Stone Gap; her son, Jerry Fraley and Louise Palmer of Big Stone Gap; four grandchildren, Sue Ellen Burton and husband, Robbie, Chris Fraley and wife, Cindy, all of Big Stone Gap, Matt Cooper and wife, Toni of Fincastle, Va. and Jonathan Cooper of Orlando, Fla.; seven great-grandchildren, Evan Burton, Haley Burton, Tessa Burton, Megan Fraley, Christopher Fraley, Alan Bayse and Chase Cooper; one brother, Fleet Tate of Big Stone Gap; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Holding Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alan Collier officiating.

Interment will follow in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Makin, Kevin Lane, Ned Spears, Johnny Wells, Doug Shupe, Powder Lawson, Bud Kress and Boxer Swinney.

York, SC - Charles Thomas Vanhook, 65, of 3011 Vanhook Drive, York, SC, died Friday (September 7, 2012) at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville, NC.

Charles spend the first part of his life in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He was the son of the late W.Z. Vanhook and Easter Tate Vanhook. He graduated from Powell Valley High School and from East Tennessee State University. He worked for the Virginia Division of Mined Land Reclamation. Charles had been a dedicated member, deacon and member of the choir at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap, and he was an active member in the Big Stone Gap Lion's Club.

He is survived by his son, Charles Thomas Clements (Gerri) and four grandchildren of Prior Lake, MN; sister, Linda Vanhook Carter (Conrad) of Albemarle, NC; brothers, William Z. Vanhook, Jr. (Patsy) of York, SC and Robert Joseph Vanhook (Susan) of Suffolk, VA; and a sister-in-law Ann Vanhook (wife of the late Marvin Vanhook) of Kingsport, TN.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 10, 2012 at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap, VA.

Suffolk - Robert Joseph Vanhook , 64, passed away at home, on Friday, December 28, 2012 after a 5 year battle with Pancreatic cancer.

Bob was born on August 31, 1948 to Easter and W.Z. Vanhook in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Bob graduated from Virginia Tech in 1970.

After graduation, Bob joined the United States Navy, where after 25 years of service to his country as a naval aviator, Commander Vanhook retired in 1995.

He was a loving husband, devoted father & grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and son. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan, sons Nicholas Vanhook, & Jay Glover (Teresa), grandson Hayden Glover, mother-in-law Carole Sebastian, sister Linda Carter (Conrad), brother William Zane Vanhook, Jr., brother-in-law Dan Sebastian (Marcy), sister-in-law Ann Vanhook, nephews Adam Carter, Jeff Vanhook (Stacy), William Zane Vanhook,, III (Michelle), Danny Sebastian (Michelle), Brian Sebastian (Jackie), niece Dr. Kelly Nelson (Keith), great nephews Trevor Sebastian, Patrick Lemmon, William Zane Vanhook IV, great nieces Kathleen Lemmon, Brynn Sebastian & Mia Sebastian.

Bob and Susan were married 23 years. His love of duck hunting, woodworking, golf, and time spent with sons, grandson, and loving family members made his life blessed. He will be terribly missed.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at the Nansemond River Baptist Church, 2896 Bridge Road, Suffolk, VA on Saturday, January 26, 2012 at 1 pm. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ? Rose Marie Tate, 61, of the 800 block of Caribe Place, passed away on Oct. 27, 2007 in Norfolk.

Born in Benham, Ky., and formerly of Big Stone Gap, Va., she was the daughter of the late Marvin Creed and Rosa Leigh France Tate.

She graduated in 1968 from the Medical College of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and was currently employed as the Director of Risk Management at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. She was a member of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management and past president of the Virginia Chapter of ASHRM.

Surviving are a sister, Sue Ellen Tate Baker and her husband, Gary; a nephew, Jessee Baker and his wife, Destiny and daughter, Kyleigh Shinpaugh; aunts, Ida Fraley of Big Stone Gap, Mildred Tate of Kingsport, and Bea Tate of New Paltz, N.Y.; an uncle, Fleet Tate, of Big Stone Gap, Va.; and numerous cousins.

She will be greatly missed by her EVMS family, her extended family in Virginia Beach, and her special friends, Annie Butler, Sam McClanahan and Debbie Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
