Some sources claim that this John Tate married Elizabeth McClanahan, but in the Chalkley's records, it states that "John Tate, Jr." married Elizabeth. According to other sources, including submissions to familysearch, the John Tate that married Elizabeth McClanahan was the son of John Tate and Jane Steele, which would explain the reference to "John Tate, Jr." in the Chalkley's record.

By a process of elimination, the John Tate Jr who married Elizabeth McClenachan on 27 Feb 1794 must be the son of James2. The other Johns in the 3rd generation are accounted for: John of John2 was not mentioned in a 1814 court case (Finley vs Tate) with his siblings and was probably one of the two unnamed sons who were "since dead under age, unmarried and intestate;" John of William2 went to IN; and John of Robert2 married Nancy Moffett.

Starting in 1790, John appeared on the Augusta County tax lists as John Tate Jr to distinguish him from his grandfather John Tate Sr and uncle John Tate Esquire. A small holding of 1 white titheable and 1 horse in 1790-93 indicate he was less well off than John Esq who had about a half dozen horses and several slaves. For several years after 1793, John Jr had one or more additional titheables— - one probably being his brother Isaac. After the death of his uncle John Esq in 1802, no John Tates were listed in Augusta.

The Tate Family moved to Callaway County, Missouri in 1829. Isaac at that time was 21 years old. He was six feet tall, strongly built and finely proportioned. His weight in mature years was about 210 pounds.

As he was a magnificent man physically, so he had a magnificent mind which he kept in fine working order.

At the age of 25 he married Jane Henderson and settled on the edge of Grand Prairie, on what is known as the Colonel Boyd Farm. In 1847 he moved to Tate's Prairie where he lived until his death. Colonel Tate was an intelligent, enthusiastic and successful farmer. He was not a trader nor a speculator.

He was a great friend of education. For many years and up to the time of his death he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Westminster College and no member was more constant in his attendance or gave wiser counsels as to its management through it's years of struggle for life and success.

Colonel Tate was a man of deep religious principals. These determined his conduct in everything and gave weight to his character. He was, for 54 years, a ruling elder in the Auxvasse Presbyterian Church and never allowed anything but serious sickness to keep him from the public service of God's house. He recognized God in his home and always maintained the duty of family prayer.

    BIOGRAPHY

    From Find A Grave:

Isaac Nesbit Tate was the son of two distinguished educators of the deaf. His paternal grandparents Isaac Tate and Jane Wright Henderson Tate were very early settlers of the northeastern prairies of Callaway county, Missouri. They had been raised within the Boone & Bryan settlement parties and had lived in Kentucky at the time of the indians raids when settlers held up in stations. This tradition is still strong in the Tate family of today.

Until he was nine, Isaac lived on the campus of the Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, Missouri where his father was superintendent and his mother was a pioneer in the teaching of speech and lip reading. When he was 8, a catasptophic fire swept the school one February night, leaving only one major building standing. He was part of a brigade of children that distributed blankets to the pupils who'd been routed from their home. The blankets had been obtained from the Insane Asylum adjacent to the school. This family moved to Faribault in 1896.

The Missouri School is located in Callaway County. Each year, an event called the Kingdom Supper is held there. An individual who was born and raised in the county and has left it to achieve great success is honored. The person must be one who has made an unusual effort to serve others in meaningful ways. In 1936 this award was given to Isaac Nesbit Tate who was, at that time, an officer of the Weyerhauser Corp. in Minnesota.

He had one sister, Elizabeth Tate Monroe.
