    Lebanon, Va.
    H. John Tate, 85, former Russell County treasurer, School Board member and state legislator, died in a Lebanon Hospital Thursday afternoon.

    He had served two terms as county treasurer and one term as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He was a member of the Lebanon Memorial Methodist Church and the oldest member of Stewart's Chapel Masonic Lodge.
    Survivors include his wife Mrs. Ada Jessee Tate; three daughters, Miss Mildred Tate and Mrs. Margaret Dickenson, Lebanon, and Mrs. Kathleen (?), Irvington, N.J.; two sons, Thomas, Holeyville, Ala., and Dr. Leland B.Tate, Blacksburg, Va.; seven sisters; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

    Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Lebanon Funeral Home is in charge.

    Notes:

    After graduating from Emory and Henry College in 1927, Tate worked as a banker and published a book titled The Virginia Guide. He attended graduate school at the University of Virginia and received a master's degree in economics and sociology in 1931. He later obtained a Ph.D. in sociology from Cornell. In 1937, Tate became an associate professor of rural sociology at Virginia Tech. Among other activities, he studied rural-urban relations; produced a study of Virginia's changing population; and served on a governor's commission relating to population, health, and medical care. In 1935, Tate married Mildred Thurow (1905-1996), who became professor of home economics at Virginia Tech in 1937.

    OBITUARY

    LEBANON ? Alfred Browning (Oppy) Dickenson Jr., 67, passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Russell County Medical Center after an extended illness.

    Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Alfred Browning Dickenson Sr. and Margaret Tate Dickenson. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School and attended Emory & Henry College and East Tennessee State University.

    In Alfred?s early years, he had been affiliated with radio broadcast journalism in Richlands, Bristol and Juneau, Alaska. Alfred had pursued agricultural work and was a landlord of leases in Lebanon. He was a lifelong member of Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church. His paternal grandparents, G.H. and Rebecca Browning Dickenson, and maternal grandparents, John and Ada Jessee Tate, also
    preceded him in death.

    Alfred was survived by numerous cousins of both families.

    Honorary pallbearers will be Larry McReynolds,

    A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at 4 p.m. at the Tate family plot in West Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, with Rev. Michael Carter and former Pastor Donald Nation of Tazewell, Va. officiating. Honorary pallbearers
    will be Almerine Jackson, Billy Dean Fields, Billy Honaker, Ron Barrett, George Thomas and Steven Shortt. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery.

    Owens Funeral Service, Lebanon, is in charge of arrangements.
