Aaron Tate had several land grants in Warren County, TN and lived for some time adjoining his brother Robert H. Tate who sold his home place on January 12, 1819. He lived on Wannamaker Branch, a tributary of the Collins River in Warren County, TN, a planter. In 1820 they had a large family but we know they didn't marry until 1810, consequently it is thought that on their help was counted on the Census. By 1840 they migrated to Dekalb County, AL. They lived near Fort Payne, Dekalb County, AL for many years. He died and was buried near the same.

Notes from the Estate Files of Aaron Tate, Sr., John Tate, Elizabeth Connelly Tate, and Maben Dock Tate, all late of Dekalb County, Alabama, by Roland Tate, descendant.
AARON TATE:
A personal note is as follows; many of the documents one would expect to find in these estate files are missing, and may never be recovered. In the course of trying to arrange and flatten these files for a forthcoming microfilming, I found that the papers had been misfiled between folders and some were difficult to read from their mishandling and abuse over the years, as well as poor penmanship and some illiteracy on the part of the initiators. For my part, I will hit the high points for the purpose of genealogy.
I found no documents requesting assignment as Administrator for the Estate and no document where the Bond was signed for the Estate. Aaron's date of death has been given as June of 1862, but I found no confirmation of that. It is clear that by January 12, 1863, Elizabeth Connelly Tate and Elias Killian were the Administrators, because they made application on that date to sell most of the lands of the Estate to Daniel Killian for $900.00. This would include the NE ¼ of the SE ¼, of Section 14, the NE ¼ of the NW !/4, the SE ¼ of the NW ¼, the W ½ of the NW ¼ , and the W ½ of the SW ¼ , excepting the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ (Description not included - all in Section 13, Township 7 South, Range8 East of the Huntsville Meridian).
On January 20, 1863, Elizabeth signed her consent to sell her Third part dower in the lands above. At some point in time, an apprenticeship Bond was entered into the Estate settlement. This Bond was made for the apprenticeship of Thomas Cunningham, a Sixteen year old minor (Born - 16 October 1622), and was signed July 14, 1838.
On March 25, 1864, John N. Franklin, Probate Judge, issued citations for the Court to be held the 2nd Monday in April. Summoned were: Elizabeth Killian, wife of Elias Killian; Maburn Tate; Aaron Tate; Robert Tate; Elizabeth Little, wife of William Little; John K. Hoge, Guardian ad Litem of the minor heirs " William Tate (a space) John Tate, Elizabeth Little wife of Thomas Little - decd."
Here, is the explanation for a number of things. Ethel Updike had a family chart that listed the Eleven children of Aaron Tate, but in view of the numbers found in the old census records changed it to Fourteen. She likewise indicated that no trace could be found of William. In her Book, Tate Families of the Southern States - Vol. II, she brings in the statement of Hood Tate that Stephen that died at Shiloh was a nephew of John and not a son. Here, I can but draw one conclusion. William Tate was married and had Three children; Elizabeth Louise who married Thomas Little, Stephen who died at Shiloh, and John, who married Elizabeth Weaver and died before May 06, 1863. William and his wife probably both died early on while the children were quite young.
On March 02, 1870, the court issued a citation to Elizabeth to file the account for final settlement. Again there are missing documents. A document confirming that James Cunningham and Susannah Cunningham had signed Power of Attorney to J. H. Davis, relating to this Estate, was signed in Comanche Co., Texas May 08, 1871, and was entered in this file.

He died in Dekalb County, AL prior to 1887 and in a letter to Martin Van Buren Tate family, Dr. Killian stated he died in 1874/77. He married Delaney (Lane) Killian, born in 1826 in AL. There were many of the name in Warren County, TN. However, because of the destruction of court records it is difficult to determine just where they came from or who they were. 14. | John TATE (1.Aaron1) was born 1833, Warren Co. TN; died Bef May 06, 1863, DeKalb Co. AL. Notes:
Notes from the Estate Files of Aaron Tate, Sr., John Tate, Elizabeth Connelly Tate, and Maben Dock Tate, all late of Dekalb County, Alabama, by Roland Tate.
JOHN TATE:
On May 06, 1863, Elizabeth (Weaver) Tate, Samuel Weaver, A. Frazier, and G. W. Malone signed a bond, and application for the appointment of Elizabeth Tate and John B. Frazier as Administrators of the Estate of John Tate was made. They qualified as Administrators on February 18, 1867.
July 10, 1867, a petition was made for a distribution to be made to the John Tate Estate from the Aaron Tate Estate. Apparently, a distribution was made. Elizabeth Tate promptly made application for the sale of the John Tate lands to pay John's debts. A petition for a guardian's fair share of the Estate was denied and was set at a 1/30th. Part.
September 11, 1867, a John Tate Estate accounting was made, and the expenses for the children were obviously inflated. Then another accounting was made on February 26, 1869. Elizabeth listed well in excess of $6,000 in tuition, board, and clothing for her minor children, Mary "Polly" Ann Tate, Aaron Tate, and Hannah Elizabeth Tate. A distribution was made which included the widow, the children, and interest on the admin. expenses for the estate for 5 years. Elizabeth resigned as Administrator of the Estate. The Judge asked for Two men who knew the land and the heirs of John Tate to give him an evaluation and description of the land. A voucher for legal services was submitted on March 16, 1869.
July 22, 1869, the Two men requested on February 26th gave testimony in verification of the lands described as the SE ¼ of the Se ¼ of Section 14 and the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ of Section 13, both in Township 7S, Range 8E of the Huntsville Meridian. The following letters written in 1911 are of interest to us now, they are from H. E. Killian and written to Martin Van Buren Tate who then lived at Thatcher, AZ:
January 18, 1911
Dear Cousin,
I want to tell you how good it was to get a letter from you. Mart, I have been practicing medicine for 30 years. I am doing well. Got plenty to live on if I can take care of it. I own a 281 acre farm. Got it well fixed up, a good house and barn, plenty of stock on the farm, horses, cattle and hogs. I have 125 acres in cultivation. Make plenty to live on. I have four living children. 3 boys and one living girl, Georgie (C) Parr he wrote to us last night. He is selling goods at Collbran, doing very well. Artimus Daniel is a fine Physician. He lives at Hold, AL, about 140 miles. Smith W. (heare), Martin C. (E) Killian namesake lives in Meridian MS, he has the yards in Meridian, he is a Rail Road man. Claud D. Killian the babie is in Medical College in Birmingham and he making a Doctor. I think he will make a good one. We have 3 dead, Maud A., she died at 12 1/2 years. She was the best scoller of her age I ever saw. She could read Latin. It was the work thing I ever had to give her up. I thought I never could stand it. I want you to write me and tell me all the latest news from Kaufman County and all the people that I knew when I lived there and all about cousin Nimi and your children. V---Hamilton went back to Texas and died. I guess you head that Henry G. Hamilton died September the 5th day. He had consumption, he had 8 children. Uncle Maban Tate died 1874 or 1877. Grandfather Tate has been dead about 34 years, grandmother Tate has been dead about 27 years. I guess you heard about Nan's death. She died of consumption. She has been dead since August 6, 1876. I heard of Aunt Vinn's death but have never heard about your {a's death. Give my love to all your family.
H. E. Killian
February 1, 1911
Dear Cousin,
Yours of recent date, I was glad to hear from you. I have been busy for the last few days. Have had a lot of sickness in the naborhood. Mart how come you to go out so far West? I am 72 years in September, I am stout and in very good health. I am stout for a man that has done the work that I have for the last 41 years. Mart, I had 4 children by Nan and 3 by last wife. 2 boys and 2 girls by Nan and 2 boys (Martain) and Artemus Daniel. 2 boys by Mat and one girl Maud died at 12 years old and the first one at 11 months old. My babie will be 28 years old the 3rd of next December. He is in school at Birmingham. I am making a doctor of him. Cousin, all of the old Tates are dead. Most of them lived to be very old before they died. Uncle Aaron died 1892. I think Aunt Susannah Cunningham was the last of the family to die. Mart, I can't remember anything about your Pa's people. They did not live in Alabama. They lived in Warren County, TN. If you will write to Uncle James or Dave Cunningham they might give you some information about your family on your pa's side. This leaves us all well, there is but me and (Mat) since Claud went to Coledge. He will be home the last of April for 5 months more. I will close, write soon.

Excerpt from Tate Families of the Southern States, Volume II, 1984, by Laura W. Mentzel & Ethel S. Updike
He enlisted in the Confederacy on August 7, 1863, in Jackson County, AL in Company "K", 3rd Confederate Regiment. He was released May 5, 1865. He stated he had a wife and one daughter, aged 28, but did not give her name. He stated later that he had eight children, six girls and two sons, but none of their names were recited. He married in Warren County, TN on July 5, 1866 by the Reverand Lyon Brown at St. Mary's Church, Adelaide Deering, born March 10, 1843 of McMinnville, Warren County, TN. Witnesses at their wedding Thomas Brown and Annie Rogers. She stated she was born in TN, her father born in VA and her mother in TN. She died on June 2, 1932 after having received his pension for some time.
Reference: Pension files #7999 and 10345; Federal Census 1880 Jackson County, AL, 1880 Sequatchie County, TN.
In a letter from James Striegel Tate to Ethel Updike on June 9, 1978, he wrote:
"Dock Mayburn Tate was born in DeKalb County, AL on October 8, 1846. He was the son of Aaron Tate, Jr.) On August 7, 1863 he enlisted in Co. "K" of the 3rd (also 11th) Confederate Cavalry Regiment in Jackson County, AL. He was paroled on May 5, 1854 at Guntersville, AL. On July 22, 1908 he filed for a pension which was granted under number 10,345. He died at Cagle, Sequatchie County, TN on August 5, 1923. On July 5, 1866 in Warren County, TN he married Adelaide Deering, born in McMinnville TN. On December 20, 1923 she filed for a widow's pension which was granted under No. 7999. Her application stated there were two sons (aged 41 and 46) and six daughters (aged 38, 44, 49, 51, 53, 54). They are not on the Sequatchie Census for 1870 and 1880 is too dim to read."

Excerpt from the Tate Families of Southern States, Volume II, Laura Metzel and Ethel Speer Updike, 1984
Martin Van Buren and his family lived in TX before moving to OK. The Tate family joined the Mormon Church in Oklahoma Indian Territory at the time Andrew Kimball, Father of Spencer Kimball, was Mission President of the area.
Martin V. and his wife, Margaret moved from Spanish Fork, Utah to Arizona during the summer of 1898. With them were seven of their then, nine children. The two older girls, Maggie and Myrtle, then 16 and 17 years old, remained in Spanish Fork, working for individual families. The seven children who came to Arizona were Homer, Nellie, Bessie, Gracie, Mable, Alma and Ruth.
In 1894, the Tate family moved to Utah. and settled in Spanish Fork. The winters in Utah affected Margaret's arthritis so severely, they felt a warmer climate would give her more relief. When Martin heard that Andrew Kimball was being called to preside as Stake President over the St. Joseph Stake, he sought his advice concerning moving the Tate family to Arizona. On the recommendation of President Andrew Kimball, the Tates started for Arizona with all their possessions in two wagons. One wagon was pulled by mules, the other by horses. Martin V. drove one wagon and Homer, age 13, drove the other. They arrived in Central in the late summer of 1898. The only available housing at the time was an empty granery located near the church and school. The tenth child of the Tate family, Zina Myrtle, was born in Central. Martin V. and his family stayed in Central a little more than six years. In order to provide better for the large family, they moved to Globe, AZ where they started a boarding house for the miners. This gave an opportunity to put the girls of the family to work. The Tate family eventually moved back to the Gila Valley locating permanently in Thatcher, AZ.
In the Gila Valley, daughter Nellie Bly married her Central school teacher, Spencer C. Heywood. Homer M. married his neighbor, Emma Pearl Coombs of Central.

Excerpt from the Tate Families of Southern States, Volume II, Laura Metzel and Ethel Speer Updike, 1984
He was a Sherriff of Graham County, AZ 1924 - 1929, a farmer. Many may remember Homer as the practical joker of the town. He moved to Central in the late summer of 1898 with his father, Martin Van Buren Tate from Spanish Fork, UT at the age of thirteen.
It seems Homer attended school in Central only a very short time. He worked at odd jobs on the farms until he was seventeen years old, when he began working in the mines. He found work at such places as Pierce, Bisbee, Glove, AZ and in Cananea, Mexico.
Emma Pearl Coombs was born in Central, AZ, the eighth child of George and Pauline Gulbransen Coombs, Jr. All Emma's formal education was received in the Central schools.
Homer was working at Globe, AZ in 1906-07. At this time, Emma left Central and went to work for the Tate's Boarding House in Globe. During this time a courtship blossomed into marriage, which took place in October of 1907. Homer and Emma began their married life at the new town site of Copper Hill, which consisted of a few 10 x 12 foot tents, boarded up on three sides. Here they lived for about three years while both Homer and Emma continued working, until very early in 1911. Emma returned to Central early in 1911 as the first born of the family was expected.
The Tates' first child, Martin Coombs Tate was born March 5, 1911. Since Central was a farming community, jobs were very scarce and about the only work available was helping on individual farms on a day or two, basis. So, in the early part of 1915, Homer felt he should procure work that would provide a better means of support for the family which now had an additional member, daughter Pearl. Homer went alone to Bisbee where he secured employment in the mines. Emma and their two chldren followed later after housing was secured.
In 1916, the Tates were back in Central, a mining town was not the best place to rear a family. Homer felt he should try farming as a means of providing for his family, now consisting of three children, as a second son, Goerge Vining, was born in July of 1916.
The Tates secured a house and small acreage immediately west of the railroad tracks on the old highway, known as the Thomas place. Homer farmed in Central and Pima until 1921. At this time, Homer was appointed by the Governor, G. W. P. Hunt, to the position of Detail Officer at the Boys Reformatory at Fort Grant. Emma served as Matron of the girls dormitory, located on the same site with separate facilities.
After spending a year at Ft. Grant, the Tates moved back to Central and purchased what was called the Thurman Place in the Northwest part of town. There were only about eight acres under cultivation. Alfalfa, vegetables and melons were the main crops raised. Homer was Constable of Central until December 7, 1924. During the elections of the fall of 1924, Homer was elected Sheriff of Graham County.
During the summer of 1922-1923, Homer, accompanied by a dozen Boy Scouts, climbed Mt. Graham for a week of encampment. Homer spent a good portion of the time testing the bravery of the boys, mainly by concocting ways to scare them. On one occasion after visiting the old sawmill and on their return hike to camp on Soldier Creek, Homer slipped ahead and concealed himself in a rather dense thicket. Previously he had told the boys that one of the men at the mill had wounded a bear, and that a wounded bear could be pretty mean. From a thicket, Homer made sounds of a wounded bear just as the boys came by in a single file. Some track stars were born, all except for Morgan Taylor. Fear set in, along with exhaustion, and after a short sprint, Morgan yelled, "For Hell's sake Homer, wait!!", thinking that Homer was farther up the trail. About this time the "wounded" bear came out of the thicket.
The Tates moved to Safford, AZ in December, 1925 where Homer assumed the duties of Sheriff.
