Robert Tate was not as active in civic affairs and less is known of him.

Robert Tate Sr. received a land grant of 174 acres in Fincastle, County, VA on December 13, 1774 on Big Moccasin Creek, North Fork of Holston River. On April 20, 1784 he received a land patent of 250 acres in Washington County, VA on both sides of Big Moccasin Creek on a spur of Clinch Mountain on the Holston River some three miles from Col. John Tate. In 1781 he and his brother, John swore allegiance to the United States in Washington County, VA. In 1781.

In Nov. 1781, John Tate, Robert Tate, William Huston and John Wood were appointed to appraise the estate of Francis Fugate deceased, who was killed by a fall from his horse.

The following legal petition was filed in 1785 and signed by several Tates.

This is a petition asking the House of Delegates of VA to place a line "fixed along Clinch Mountain and Montgomery line to the Carolina line" to separate them from Washington Co. These inhabitants include those of Clinch River, Moccasin Creek, Powels Valley, north branch of Holstein River, and "others." Dated Dec. 9, 1785. Washington Co., VA, is in the far southern section of VA, just before the border into TN and not far from NC. Signers of this petition are: John TATE, Thomas TATE, Robert TATE, Jr., Rober TATE, Sr.

He was an Ensign of the Militia in 1786, while his brother, John was a Lieutenant.

Robert Tate was a contemporary with and associated in many court affairs with Col. John Tate. Robert Tate's will did not mention that most of his children were minors, but they were. On October 10, 1816, John Tate and wife Dicey, James Tate and wife Ruth, Robert Tate and wife Susannah, Alexander Tate and wife Delilah, Aaron Tate and wife Betsey and Marady Price and wife Polly, all of Warren County, TN, of the first part to Joseph Tate of Russell County, VA, the home place. The same land this Robert Tate acquired in 1774 and 1784, adjacent to Richard Davis and Hullams, witnessed by John Rodgers and Reuben Berryman. All of the males signed, and Mary (Polly) Tate signed her right of dower to her son Joseph Tate.

He received a land grant of 174 acres on December 13, 1774 on Big Moccasin Creek, North Fork of the Holston River in Fincastle County, VA. It begins near Hansonville and is a long valley extending to near Big Moccasin Gap in Scott County, VA. The Valley is paralleled by Clinch Mountain on the South and Moccasin Ridge on the North. Moccasin Valley adjoins Washington County, VA at the top of Clinch Mountain and Scott County, VA to the South. Big Moccasin Creek extends the entire length of the valley flowing into the north fork of the Holston River near Big Moccasin Gap. The story is told that early settlers coming through the valley found Indian moccasin footprints in the soft mud on the banks of the creek. This, the name Moccasin Creek and later Moccasin Valley. The naming of the creek has been attributed to Daniel Boone in about 1769.

Robert Tate, who, resided in Washington County, VA, assisted in establishing independence while acting in the capacity of a Surveyor of the Road and as a member of a Jury, qualifying him for service as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. He was a Surveyor of the Road from May 14, 1781 until April 16, 1783. He service on a Jury in 1782.

It is also probable that Robert served with the "Kings Mountain Men" a group of militia formed in his area, however we have not yet found documentation to support this. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has a concise application on Robert Tate and list all of his sources regarding his service. Descendants have been admitted into the association.

LAND RECORDS

On Dec. 13, 1774 surveyors for Fincastle County Virginia surveyed a tract of 174 acres on Moccasin Creek in what is now Russell County, Virginia This tract was granted to Robert Tate.

On May 1, 1782 Washington County Virginia issued land grants of 250 acres to Robert Tate and 100 acres to John Tate, both on Moccasin Creek. On February 20, 1793 William Tate bought 145 acres on Moccasin Creek adjoining the 424 acres granted to Robert Tate.

Moccasin Creek was located in Botetourt County prior to 1773; in Fincastle County from January 1773 to January 1777; in Washington County from 1777 to May 1786; in Russell County May from 1786 to present.

Be it remembered that I Robert Tate of the county of Russell in the state of Virginia being in a very weak and infirm state of body but of sound mind and desirous of settling my worldly affairs do make this my last will and testament giving and bequeathing as follows, viz:

1st I do give to my wife Mary Tate one negro woman named Luce and one negro boy named Jim and also one negro boy named Sulas and also four cows and calves two two year old heifers one two year steer and also two bay horses and one gray horse, and also all my household furniture and also all my stock of hogs and also the land I now live on and also all working tools thereto belonging except that piece or parcel of land lying on the south west side of the mill dam Beginning at the big spring thence with the dam to the saw pit thence to the cave by the big sink hole thence to the line where it crosses Ovaltons road and also do give to my wife Mary Tate one still and the complements thereto belonging and also all my flock of sheep and also one yearling steer to hold during her natural life or widowhood then at her death or marriage to be divided between my son Joseph Tate and my son Alexander Tate and my son Aaron Tate and my daughter Polly Tate reserving to my wife Mary Tate her third part only in case she should marry.

Item, I give to my son John Tate and my son James Tate that piece or parcel of land above mentioned lying south-west of the mill dam and bounded as above directed, only that my son John Tate and my son James Tate do pay my son Robert Tate a ten pounds horse each at the time they receive the land.

Item, I give to my son Robert Tate one negro girl named Ryah and also one mans saddle.

Item, I do direct that the above mentioned part of my estate except the land be appraised but not sold and also do except the negro girl named Ryah which I gave to my son Robert Tate.

Item, I do direct that one mare and colt and one two year old mare, three steers, one two year old heifer and four of the ____ size of the big barrows to be sold to discharge my debts.

This instrument of writing was exhibited in court as and for the last will and testament of Robert Tate dec'd and proven by the oath of John Tate one of the witnesses thereto and the hand writing of Robert Tate junr. another of the witnesses proven by the oath of the said John Tate and William Fugate and thereupon ordered to be recorded. And on motion of Mary Tate who made oath according to law and together with Richard Davis and Colebird Fugate her securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of $2,500 conditioned as the law directs administration with the will annexed is granted her on the said decedents estate in due form.

"I have wondered why there was so much time (over six months) between Robert's death and the processing of the Will for probate. My own belief is that a number of the heirs were in Tennessee looking for place to which they would migrate.

At some date, after February 3, 1807, Robert's widow, Mary and all their children, except Joseph, moved to Warren County, Tennessee. They were all listed on the tax rolls of Warren County TN for the year 1812.

On October 14, 1816, all of the children sold their inherited interest in 177 acres of land to their brother Joseph, who stayed on the family home place in Virginia. Their mother relinquished her dower rights on the same date. This action is the last record we have a Polly Tate and her husband, Meredith Price and of Mary Tate, their mother. The remaining children, Alexander, Aaron, John, James and Robert (H.) Jr., all continue to appear in the public records of Warren County, Tennessee and of Grundy County, Tennessee that was founded from Warren County in 1844."

Joseph Tate was born on Big Moccasin Creed, a spur of Clinch Mountain on the Holston River, near Lebanon, Russell County, VA of Robert and Mary Tate. That his wife was Margaret (Mary) Floyd is indicated by several deeds. On March 25, 1800, Robert Tate and his wife Mary sold to Joseph Tate, 50 acres on both sides of the Big Moccasin Creek, a steep spur of Clinch Mountain, adjacent to William Hullams and Richard Davis. No doubt, a gift, shortly after his marriage.

On October 14, 1816, the heirs of Robert Tate, deceased, all residents now, or Warren County, TN, sold to Joseph Tate, the home plantation consisting of 177 acres, it being a part of a tract of land 250 acres patented to Robert Tate on April 20, 1784. Mary Tate, the widow of Robert Tate, of Warren County, TN signed dower to her son, Joseph. On July 15, 1825, Joseph Tate and wife, Margaret of Russell, County, Va sold 100 acres to Elish Tate, on both sides of Big Moccasin Creek. Joseph died March 16, 1843.

William Tate who is indebted to Elisha Tate, administrator of the estate of Joseph, sold 177 on which his father Joseph Tate, deceased, lived. On August 23, 1844, John Tate and wife, Jane; Robert C. Tate and wife, Nancy; Elisha Tate and wife Eliza; and William Tate, heirs-at-law of Joseph Tate, deceased, sold to Joseph C. Fugate, 100 acres and 170 acres on both sides of Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain, where Joseph Tate died, adjacent Samuel C. Fugate and Elish Tate.

Alexander lived at Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain and on the Holston River, Russell County, VA. He may have been a minor when his father Robert Tate signed his will on July 29, 1796 (executed February 3, 1807), Russell County, VA. He married Delilah Henderson, a Canadian girl. Alexander remained in Virginia until the settlement of his father's estate in 1816. He purchased 100 acres on August 5, 1817, in Warren County, TN. This was witnessed by John and Robert Tate. He and his brother John settled on Dry Creek on the line of Warren and what became Van Buren County, TN out of McMinnville, TN. He died there intestate in 1847. His administrator was Douglas Tate*. ) (Inv. date torn out.)

In 1820 they were living in Warren County, TN with three sons under 10, a daughter, under 10. In 1830 two boys, one 15-20, the other 10-15, the daughter 15-20. Apparently one son died before 1830.

Alexander, Aaron, John, James and Robert (H.) Jr., all continue to appear in the public records of Warren County, Tennessee and of Grundy County, Tennessee which was founded from Warren County in 1844.

The earliest settlement in Warren County was at the junction of Hills Creek and Collins River near present-day Irvine college. Alexander and John lived there on Dry Creek which is a tributary to Hills Creek. They remained residents of Warren County.

Alexander died in testate about 1847 in Warren County. He had children, Douglas, Elgan, and Sophronia. All three migrated to Missouri. U.S. census records for Texas County, Missouri show the families of Douglas and Elgan.

John Tate was born about 1783 in Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain near Lebanon which later became Russell County, VA. He was mentioned in the will of his father Robert Tate, on July 29, 1796 and signed with his heirs in 1816.

He was given the parcel of land southwest of Mill Dam to Ovelton's Road. On February 20, 1801, John Tate purchased from John Wood of Russell County, VA for 25 pounds, 100 acres on Big Moccasin Creek granted to John Wood by Patent on January 1, 1800 adj. John Johnson and a cliff of Moccasin Creek. On July 7, 1807, John Tate and his wife, Leodicie (Dicey) sold 100 acres to Ephraim Johnson of Sullivan County, TN. Also on that same day, John and Dicey completed another transaction with Mary Hogg, believed to be Dicey's mother. Land was assigned to Dicey Hogg by Henry Creek or Cook, before her marriage to John Tate. Signature Leodicie Tate. It is thought they married about that time.

On August 6, 1806, John Tate, James, Joseph and Robert Tate signed a petition to have a new County formed. John settled with his brother Alexander on Dry Creek, Warren County, TN and apparently lived there the remainder of his life.

On February 13, 1812, Vincent Hobbs of Lincoln County, TN sold to John Tate of Warren County, TN, land on Collins River, witnessed by James Clendenon, and on October 3, 1818, John Tate of Warren County, TN sold to John Tate, land on Collins River witnessed by Alexander Tate. On July 4, 1841, a notation for Edward Hoge, dec'd estate, by James Davidson and Hood Tate. (They were probably Dicey's people.)

The only John Tate listed in Warren County, TN in 1820 is over 45 with a large family, 5 sons and 6 daughters; wife 26-45. In 1830 there were 4 sons and as many daughters. In 1845, he had died intestate, a farmer who left few records. He had eleven children. The only children identified are those shown on the 1850 Census of Warren County, TN.

John Tate of Russell County, Virginia was not on the tax rolls of Russell Connie after 1795.

John and Dicey sold their Virginia lands between July 1807 and October 1809.

Two of Robert Tate's sons, John and Robert Jr., were witnesses to his will and had to return to Virginia to prove the will for probate. The other heirs also appear to have returned to Virginia to settle the estate.

The earliest settlement in Warren County was at the junction of Hills Creek and Collins River near present-day Irvine college. Alexander and John lived there on Dry Creek which is a tributary to Hills Creek. They remained residents of Warren County.

John died intestate in 1845 in Warren County. Very little is known of him or his progeny. His widow, Dicey (Leodicia Hogg Tate) survived him. She was made administrator in October, 1845. The date of her death is unknown and the burial place of both are also unknown.

Book P, page 355, Regional offices, Warren County, Deed of Trust dated March 5, 1844. John Tate to R. M. Stepp, Trustee, to secure payment of $120.00 to James Walker and Sterling Savage mentions Dicy Tate as being the widow of John Tate when the land was sold by said Trustee on January 18, 1847. John Tate died between March 1844 and January 1847. This is the place now known as the David Coppinger or Levi Scott place and was entered by Vincent Hubbs. R. M. Stepp sold this to Jacob Woodlee Sr., January 18, 1847 containing 80 acres.

Aaron Tate had several land grants in Warren County, TN and lived for some time adjoining his brother Robert H. Tate who sold his home place on January 12, 1819. He lived on Wannamaker Branch, a tributary of the Collins River in Warren County, TN, a planter. In 1820 they had a large family but we know they didn't marry until 1810, consequently it is thought that on their help was counted on the Census. By 1840 they migrated to Dekalb County, AL. They lived near Fort Payne, Dekalb County, AL for many years. He died and was buried near the same.

AARON TATE:

A personal note is as follows; many of the documents one would expect to find in these estate files are missing, and may never be recovered. In the course of trying to arrange and flatten these files for a forthcoming microfilming, I found that the papers had been misfiled between folders and some were difficult to read from their mishandling and abuse over the years, as well as poor penmanship and some illiteracy on the part of the initiators. For my part, I will hit the high points for the purpose of genealogy.

I found no documents requesting assignment as Administrator for the Estate and no document where the Bond was signed for the Estate. Aaron's date of death has been given as June of 1862, but I found no confirmation of that. It is clear that by January 12, 1863, Elizabeth Connelly Tate and Elias Killian were the Administrators, because they made application on that date to sell most of the lands of the Estate to Daniel Killian for $900.00. This would include the NE ¼ of the SE ¼, of Section 14, the NE ¼ of the NW !/4, the SE ¼ of the NW ¼, the W ½ of the NW ¼ , and the W ½ of the SW ¼ , excepting the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ (Description not included - all in Section 13, Township 7 South, Range8 East of the Huntsville Meridian).

On January 20, 1863, Elizabeth signed her consent to sell her Third part dower in the lands above. At some point in time, an apprenticeship Bond was entered into the Estate settlement. This Bond was made for the apprenticeship of Thomas Cunningham, a Sixteen year old minor (Born - 16 October 1622), and was signed July 14, 1838.

On March 25, 1864, John N. Franklin, Probate Judge, issued citations for the Court to be held the 2nd Monday in April. Summoned were: Elizabeth Killian, wife of Elias Killian; Maburn Tate; Aaron Tate; Robert Tate; Elizabeth Little, wife of William Little; John K. Hoge, Guardian ad Litem of the minor heirs " William Tate (a space) John Tate, Elizabeth Little wife of Thomas Little - decd."

Here, is the explanation for a number of things. Ethel Updike had a family chart that listed the Eleven children of Aaron Tate, but in view of the numbers found in the old census records changed it to Fourteen. She likewise indicated that no trace could be found of William. In her Book, Tate Families of the Southern States - Vol. II, she brings in the statement of Hood Tate that Stephen that died at Shiloh was a nephew of John and not a son. Here, I can but draw one conclusion. William Tate was married and had Three children; Elizabeth Louise who married Thomas Little, Stephen who died at Shiloh, and John, who married Elizabeth Weaver and died before May 06, 1863. William and his wife probably both died early on while the children were quite young.

On March 02, 1870, the court issued a citation to Elizabeth to file the account for final settlement. Again there are missing documents. A document confirming that James Cunningham and Susannah Cunningham had signed Power of Attorney to J. H. Davis, relating to this Estate, was signed in Comanche Co., Texas May 08, 1871, and was entered in this file.

Aaron lived on Wanamaker's Branch very near the future Grundy County line. After his last child was born in Warren County, Tennessee, in 1833, Aaron moved his family into the newly opened "Indian lands" that are now in DeKalb County, Alabama with which he is hereafter associated.

Born in 1778 in Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain on the Holston River, some 15 miles from Lebanon, Russell County, VA. Son of Robert and Mary Tate. Here he grew up and married Ruth Davidson, daughter of James Davidson (Davison) of Russell and Scott Counties, VA (1826 Scott County, VA Wills), in 1798. It is believed that he migrated to Warren County, TN before his father died in 1806 with Ruth and children.

He and Ruth Davidson had thirteen children. They were divorced before February 23, 1829 when he married Elizabeth Smith. He and Elizabeth were the parents of five children.

That he was the son of Robert and Mary Tate of Russell Co. VA was recited in a deed dated October 14, 1816, Russell Co., VA, when the heirs of Robert Tate decided to dispose of certain land. James and wife Ruth; John and wife Dicey; Robert and wife Susannah; Alexander and wife Delilah and Mary "Polly" and husband Marady Price, met and sold the land to their brother Joseph Tate. The mother Mary who was also in Warren Co., TN, signed her dower to the son Joseph Tate who remained on the old plantation in Russell Co., VA.

Major James Tate also executed a will. He died testate April 19, 1849, buried in Philadelphia Cemetery, 13 miles south of McMinnville, TN. The will was contested, went to the Supreme Court of TN. The widow, Elizabeth received most of the estate. However, all of the children were named. Robert and Davidson Tate were named administrators.

In 1806 he met with some of his brothers (he and four of his brothers, Aaron, Alexander, John and Robert, are listed on the 1820 Warren County, TN tax rolls) and others to petition for a New County where they lived, consequently in 1807 Warren County was organized. James and his brother Robert settled in a remote section of the County, on Taylor Creek, until after he married his second wife (Elizabeth Smith) and moved to the mountains, in what later became Grundy County, TN. He accumulated a considerable amount of land (over 20,000 acres) in the valley, as well as on the Cumberland Plateau where he maintained a distillery. (Warren County was a major producer of apple brandy during his lifetime.)

James and Robert H. lived on Taylor's Creek near to Mt. Olive and Philadelphia Church where James is buried. The formation of Grundy County in 1844 left them residents thereof and they remained as afterward.

James died testate in Grundy County on April 19, 1849. His first wife was Ruth by whom he had 13 children. They were divorced about 1827 -- 28 and on February 23, 1829, he married Elizabeth Smith, a much younger woman. They had five children, the oldest of which was apparently born out of wedlock. I, in common with most of the Tates of Grundy County, am a descendant of James and Ruth Tate. He left more records of himself than any of the others.

MILITARY SERVICE

He served in the War of 1812 at the rank of Captain, later promoted to Major and was known as Major Tate from that time on. He served as a Justice of the Peace for Warren County and was prominent in business and public affairs. Warren County Militiamen in the Creek Indian Wars of 1814, Captain James Tait's (Tate) Company, Col. Stephen Copeland's 3rd West Tennessee Regiment, General Thomas Johnson Brigade. The Creek Indian Wars of 1814 were classified by the U. S. Government as a "sub-war' of the War of 1812. Several militia companies were organized from the area of Warren County, TN and it's adjacent counties, including that of Capt. James Tait. Not only did Capt. Tait muster and pay rolls survive, but so did his personal pay voucher which specified dates, actual miles traveled and locations. The militia records of 1814 are particularly valuable to researchers because so many of these men were under 20 years of age--too young to have appeared on the 1812 Warren County tax lists, and often gone by 1820. The following is an exact transcription from the original records:

For transporting 1100 lbs. his private baggage as a Captain in the Regiment of West Tennessee Militia, commanded by Col. Stephen Copeland composing part of Genl. Thos. Robert was born 1780 on Big Moccasin Creek, a spur of Clinch Mountain near the Holston River. It is thought that his full name was Robert Hood Tate III, but no documentary proof has been found. He was, no doubt, a minor when his father executed his will July 29, 1796. However, no mention was made in the will regarding their ages. He and his wife had been living in Warren County, TN before 1806, since he signed, with his other brother, a petition requesting that there be a new County formed. He and his wife, Susannah were named in the deed on October 14, 1816 when the heirs of Robert Tate dec'd sold the home plantation.

They settled in Warren County, TN near his brother Major James Tate on Taylor's Creek out of McMinnville, Warren County, TN. A descendant stated he was the most active of all the brothers in Civil affairs and had four land grants totalling some 5,190 acres of land. On January 12, 1819 Robert H. Tate sold 150 acres adj. Aaron Tate, where he then lived, to John Gross, no wife signed dower.

The Federal Census of 1820, Warren County, TN lists this family with 3 sons and 5 daughters. In 1830 there was still 3 sons, however, one under 10 years of age. They had a large family and only those showing on the 1850 Census are known. He married Cynthia, born 1805, in Georgia. She was living with son Aaron in 1880.

Robert Hood Tate died testate in 1864. His will was dated April 8, 1864 in Grundy County, TN. Do not have the probate date. Wife Cynthia, son Aaron V. Tate, and grand daughter Harriet Webb, her small son, Aaron Woodlee Webb. Exor. Sedon Brown. Witness: Enoch Woodlee."

Alexander, Aaron, John, James and Robert (H.) Jr., all continue to appear in the public records of Warren County, Tennessee and of Grundy County, Tennessee which was founded from Warren County in 1844.

The White County court record for 1806 shows Robert Tate to be a resident of the county.

Two of Robert Tate?s sons, John and Robert Jr., were witnesses to his will and had to return to Virginia to prove the will for probate. The other heirs also appear to have returned to Virginia to settle the estate.

James and Robert H. lived on Taylor's Creek near to Mt. Olive and Philadelphia Church where James is buried. The formation of Grundy County in 1844 left them residents thereof and they remained as afterward.

Robert H. died testate in Grundy County in 1867. His burial place is unknown. He also had two wives. Nothing is known of Susannah (the first). She signed the deed to Joseph in 1816 as Robert's wife. The second wife, Cintha, is also unknown to us. She survived Robert in 1867, and jointly inherited his estate with Aaron, a son of Robert and Susannah's. After Aarons death, in 1907, a suit was instituted to make possible the final settlement of Robert' estate. The suit named the children of Robert and Susannah. No clear records have been found in to identify the children of Robert and Cintha. They were not involved in the suit.

I Elisha Tate of the County of Russell and State of VA do hereby make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say.

1st: I desire that after my decease that there be enough of my perishable property sold to pay my funeral expenses and just debts.

2nd: I desire that my wife Eliza Tate have the remaining property, all my land household and kitchen furniture with all my farming utensils during her natural life or widowhood.

3rd: I desire my single daughters Hannah F. Tate, Eliza C Tate, Darthula H. Tate and Sarah E. Tate have a place of residence with their mother so long as they remain single, also to be made equal with the other girls.

4th: I desire at the death of my wife Eliza Tate that my land be equally divided between my two sons James M. Tate and Thomas F. Tate to have and to hold forever. I further desire Robt. Fugate and Samuel P. Fugate make the division between my two sons James & Thos. F. Tate. I desire that the division of my land be immediately made after my decease.

5th: I also desire that my two sons James and Thos. F. Tate pay to my daughters Nancy, Jane, Hannah, Eliza, Darthula & Sarah E. Tate three hundred dollars to each one to be paid six months after the decease of my wife Eliza Tate.

6th: I desire that after the death of my wife Eliza Tate that all the remaining part of my property household kitchen furniture and farming utensils be sold and equally divided among all my children.

7th: I desire that when the division is made in my land that the house that my son James built is not to be taken in consideration with the value of the land. I also desire that my son James M. Tate have the north side of my land as he built on the same.

And Lastly: I do hereby constitute and appoint Samuel P. Fugate and James M. Tate executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other or former Wills or Testaments by me heretofore made.

On August 1844, John Tate and his wife, Jane, with his brothers Robert C. and his wife Nancy; Elish and wife, Eliza; and William Tate met and sold 170 acres of land on which their father, Joseph Tate (deceased) lived. After 1844, John Tate with his family moved from Russell County, VA to Powell's Valley, VA in what was then a part of Lee County, now a part of Wise County, VA where he settled.

He was pastor of the "Three Forks Baptist Church", which was founded in the year of 1798. He was pastor from February 1853 to January 1855 and from March 1857 to October 1873. He, as an elder of the church, together with Deacons Thomas Wells, Jeremiah Wells and Isaac Willis, at the request of the Toms Creek Baptist Church, was appointed to help organize a church at the Big Glades, now the town of Wise, on the first Monday in May, 1847. He was active in church affairs, and public affairs of the county and was elected and served as constable in the Richmond Township for two terms, from 1860 to 1864.

Born on the old Tate-Burdine plantation, about 15 miles from Lebanon, Russell County, VA. He was mentioned in his father, Joseph Tate's estate papers, on May 22, 1843, William Tate with John W. Owens and Elisha Tate, a third part. William Tate is indebted to Elisha Tate admin. of the Joseph Tate estate. On March 22, 1844 he sold to John W. Owens the tract of land his father Joseph lived on in his lifetime, 177 acres to John W. Owens, witnessed by John Fugate, John Tate and all three signed the deed. After 1850 he and his wife moved to Hancock County, TN where they were living in 1870 next door to their son, Elisha Tate and family.

Thompson lived with his father, Absalom, and remaining family members in White or Warren Counties, TN until around 1835 when he started his own family. His mother apparently died before 1830. Thompson married Sophronia Elizabeth Tate, daughter of Alexander Tate and Delilah Henderson. She was born around 1810 in VA or TN. It was said that Sophronia was "born with a veil" which, according to Appalachian folklore, could mean that she may have had an extra sensory "gift" or "powers." Certainly, she was held in high esteem since two of her granddaughters were named for her. Thompson and Sophronia had seven children, six of which were born in TN.

Thompson and Sophronia made their home in Warren County, TN in the Civil District 2 community of Campaign. He appears on the Tax Lists of 1836 and 1838 which show him as having 100 acres of land. The only record of land transactions found in TN was a Trust Deed dated April 25, 1838 in which a George Cole pays off a debt Thompson owed to Miller and Pennen for interest and possible sale of property. They lived in Warren County at the time of the 1850 Census but moved to Missouri shortly after that count. Their seventh child, Leander was born in MO in 1854. In the 1860 Census they are shown living in Iron County, MO with all seven children. By 1870, the family had settled in the town of Greenville in Wayne County, MO. Jane, Mary L., and Irvin were still living with them. James Elgin and William Samuel were married and living in Iron County. Sarah C. had married George B. Wallace by that time. The 1870 Census shows a Samuel Spears, farm laborer from TN, living with Thompson and Sophronia. We believe that Samuel was the son of Nancy Dunnegan and James Spears. At this time, Nancy is thought to have been Thompson's sister.

The dates and places of death for Thompson and Sophronia are unknown. The last record of Sophronia is shown on a deed dated March 22, 1879 in which she and Thompson sold a parcel of land in Wayne County to Emmanuel Lovelace. In another deed dated June 22, 1880, Thompson and his second wife, Sarah (Sallie) E. Foquaide sell a parcel of land to Irvin George Dunnegan. No evidence has been found to pinpoint the date of his death...only that he was still living in 1880. Nor, have any cemetery records been found showing their burial in Wayne or Iron Counties. There is a possibility that both were buried in a part of Old Greenville, located on the St. Francis River, which has been under water since the creation of Wappapello Dam.

A record of Thompson's marriage to Sarah E. Foquaide was found in Iron County. They were married April 14, 1880. The 1880 Census shows Thompson as head of household, 70 years old, farmer from VA, with his wife Sarah, 48 years old from TN. Also are listed two children, John (17) son, and Frances (11) daughter. The surname Dunnegan is shown for these children, but I do not believe that Thompson adopted them since their real names show up on later records. It is possible that Thompson died in St. Louis. Sally is shown living there in the 1890 Census but, most likely, she moved there after Thompson died.

Texas County, Missouri was formerly Ashley County. Texas County was organized February 14, 1845 from Shannon and Wright Counties. The new County was named for the Lone Star State. Houston, the county seat, was named for General Sam Houston, the "hero" of San Jacinto. Townships in the county are Boone, Burdine, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Current, Date, Jackson, Lynch, Morris, Ozark, Pierce, Piney, Roubidoux, Sargent, Sherrill, and Upton. The Texas County courthouse was destroyed during the Civil War, it burned on February 12, 1881 and again on December 14, 1930.

Douglas and Sarah (Price) Tate, the former of whom was born in Warren County Tenn., and the latter in Jackson County ALA., who came with their family to Sherrill Township., Texas County, Missouri in 1852 and settled on a farm in Texas County where they spent the remainder of their lives. Douglas Tate and wife were the parents of 11 children of whom Louisa Tally was the fourth in order of birth.

The names and ages of children born in Warren County, TN were confirmed by the Warren County, TN 1850 Census. On that Census it indicates that he was a farmer whose land was worth approximately $300.

He married his second wife, Rachael C., a widow with three daughters. E., b. 1855; Harriett McLaughlin, b. 1860 AR and Adaline McLaughlin, b. 1862, AR. These children were listed in the Sherill, Texas County Census of 1870, pg 479-34 and 1880, pg 368-272.

Douglas and Rachael had two additional children, Thomas J. Tate, b. 1871 and Emma Tate, b. 1874 in Sherrill Township.

He was born circa 1824 in Warren County, TN. The 1870 Federal Census for Dekalb County, Al shows him to be 46. The enumerator recited in 1880 that he was born in 1812. He died in Dekalb County, AL prior to 1887 and in a letter to Martin Van Buren Tate family, Dr. Killian stated he died in 1874/77. He married Delaney (Lane) Killian, born in 1826 in AL. There were many of the name in Warren County, TN. However, because of the destruction of court records it is difficult to determine just where they came from or who they were. Her parents were Elias and Nancy Killian.

On January 11, 1887 in Dekalb County, Al, Anthony Abraham Tate, and wife; Alexander Colett and wife Mary E.; Sally Tate, parties of the first part, being legal heirs of Mayburn and Lane Tate, deceased, certain of the estate to Garret W. Webb and William E. Quinn together with other heirs viz: Thomas Horn, and wife Betty; John Bost and wife Jane, Joseph J. McNutt and wife, Almeda, now residents of Howard County, AR.

He was a farmer. He married February 11, 1844 an Elizabeth Edmondson, born 1823 in Warren County, TN and died in 1859 in Dekalb County, Al. He married again on December 25, 1858 in Dekalb County, AL Julia Ann Asbury Shankles, born December 30, 1838 in AL. She was probably a widow. She died on February 7, 1894 in Comanche County, TX. Both are buried in board Church Methodist Cemetery. They appeared in 1879 Dekalb County, AL Census, but in 1871 they had moved to near Newburg, Comanche County, TX

Robert Hood Tate moved to Texas after 1870 by wagon train with 3 wagons and $500.00 in gold tied up in a rag. There were 14 children, Columbus being the first child born in Texas.

JOHN TATE:

On May 06, 1863, Elizabeth (Weaver) Tate, Samuel Weaver, A. Frazier, and G. W. Malone signed a bond, and application for the appointment of Elizabeth Tate and John B. Frazier as Administrators of the Estate of John Tate was made. They qualified as Administrators on February 18, 1867.

July 10, 1867, a petition was made for a distribution to be made to the John Tate Estate from the Aaron Tate Estate. Apparently, a distribution was made. Elizabeth Tate promptly made application for the sale of the John Tate lands to pay John's debts. A petition for a guardian's fair share of the Estate was denied and was set at a 1/30th. Part.

September 11, 1867, a John Tate Estate accounting was made, and the expenses for the children were obviously inflated. Then another accounting was made on February 26, 1869. Elizabeth listed well in excess of $6,000 in tuition, board, and clothing for her minor children, Mary "Polly" Ann Tate, Aaron Tate, and Hannah Elizabeth Tate. A distribution was made which included the widow, the children, and interest on the admin. expenses for the estate for 5 years. Elizabeth resigned as Administrator of the Estate. The Judge asked for Two men who knew the land and the heirs of John Tate to give him an evaluation and description of the land. A voucher for legal services was submitted on March 16, 1869.

July 22, 1869, the Two men requested on February 26th gave testimony in verification of the lands described as the SE ¼ of the Se ¼ of Section 14 and the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ of Section 13, both in Township 7S, Range 8E of the Huntsville Meridian. They further stated that they knew the heirs, Elizabeth Tate the widow about 36, Polly Tate about 12 or 14, Aaron Tate about 10, and Elizabeth Tate about 8.

Knight's, it being the NE corner of a 5000 acre survey in the name of Elan Tate, also the beginning corner of a 5000 acre survey in the name of John G. Tate, crossing Hills Turnpike Road, waters of Brush Creek, crossing Hills Turnpike, including and platting out 62 1/2 acres of older title. James Tate and John Tate, CC. Born In Big Moccasin, a spur of Clinch Mountain near the Holston River, near Lebanon, Russell County, VA. The son of Major and Ruth Davidson Tate. He married Dorcas Myers who, along with her parents was born in KY. Davidson came to TN with his parents when very young. In 1830 the family appeared with five children, some must have been working for them. They were not in Grundy County in 1840, but were there through 1880. On December 22, 1838, Davidson Tate purchased land, tools and slaves in Dekalb County, AL from Lewis D. Hall.

Jahaziel married four times; (1) to a bride of whom we know little, except she died early leaving three sons, Andrew J., John S., and James Tate who were living with the Samuel Dykes' family in the 1850 Census of Grundy County, TN. Possibly the Dykes family were the grandparents of them since rural people always find room for their own kin. He was married to (2) Sarah A. Tate, on October 18, 1839, by Justice of the Peace, W. F. Mooney (M. P. 1836 - 7, 8 and 9.) She was born 1821, age 29 on the 1850 Census of Warren County, TN and died on January 28, 1852, in Pulaski County, AR. Her family was opposed to the marriage. They, however, eloped and settled near Little Rock, Pulaski County, AR. He married (3) Lavinia "Vina" who was born in 1810 in MS. He married (4) Nancy who was born April 5, 1824 in Hinds County, TX; she died on December 7, 1893 in Poetry, TX. Her parents were born in AL and VA respectively.

It is said that he suffered from epileptic seizures and never traveled alone. He lived to be an elderly man and died on August 4, 1888 testate, buried with wife Nancy, eight miles from Terrill, Poetry, Kaufman, County, TX in the Dry Creek Cemetery. Issue born in Warren County, TN or Little Rock, Pulaski County, AR.

His will: J. H. Tate, June 22, 1880, Kaufman County, TX, wife Nancy: To sons, Jackson, John S. and M. V. Tate, to the Methodist Church So, witnessed by H. W. Rogers, James McDonald, and J. T. Daniel. Signed September 29, 1880.

Tate Family

"Elon Tate was born in Grundy County, TN, October 15, 1817. He moved to Decatur County on August 12, 1870. He located at Decaturville, Grundy County, TN until his death on December 19, 1879. Elon was a Democrat. His wife, Jane (Turner) Tate died on May 8, 1865. Their family consisted of five children, 2 died in infancy, George was killed at Decaturville on November 30, 1877, John L and James H."

He kept the Old Family Bible of the births of his siblings, called "That Book". Though he was of the first family of James Tate, (and Ruth), he was very fond of the second family. After his wife, Jane died, when she was only 45 years old, (and was buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Warren County) Elan moved to Decatur County in 1870. It is assumed that Elan and his family went and lived in Decatur County because Elizabeth (James second wife) went there to live with the Bost family in her later years. He died leaving two sons and four grand children, the oldest was an orphaned girl less than four years old.

He was issue of his father James' second marriage to Elizabeth. James original will was contested by James William M. Tate and his mother (Elizabeth) won the estate for herself and her children. He is buried in the same cemetery as his father. James William M's first wife is also buried there but there is no marker. In his will he stated his mother died and was buried in West TN.

I bequeath my soul to God who gave it. Secondly, I direct that my debts and funeral expenses be paid. Thirdly, I will that a tombstone be bought in Nashville worth $100.00 and be put up at my father's grave, and one worth $50.00 at my mother's grave who died and was buried in West Tennessee. I also direct that a tombstone worth $50.00 be put up at the grave of my deceased wife, Mary, and worth $100.00 be put at my grave. Fourthly, I will that a good foundation of dressed stone be put around the graves of my father, my deceased wife, myself and little boy, and that an iron fence be put around said graves. Fifthly, I direct that my property, both real and personal, be sold. Sixthly, I will that my executor, after winding up my estate, pay over to L. D. Mercer, who I appoint to act as Trustee for my wife, Lyncha and two children, J. K. P. Tate and Susan E. Bain, formerly Susan E. Tate, all the money in his hands belonging to my estate. Hood Tate was a First Lieutenant in the Stone Prairie Independent Home Guard Company during the Civil War. His sons, William Jasper Tate and James Jefferson Tate, were killed during the Civil War defending Springfield, Green Co., Missouri. They are buried in the National Cemetery in Springfield.

He was a prominent citizen of Wise County, VA in its early history, and held the office of Assessor in the Richmond Township of the county from 1872 to 1874. He lived to be 94 years of age and was very active up until the time of his death. He served as a Confederate Soldier all during the Civil War.

Notes from Carol E. Vaughan, great granddaughter, Lexington, KY

Irwin George, the sixth child of Thompson Dunnegan and Sophronia Tate, was born in Warren County, TN in 1849. Thompson's family had moved from VA to middle TN sometime between 1810 and 1817. After Irvin's grandfather, Absalom Dunnegan, died in White County, TN, his uncles, John and Samuel Dunnegan left that area and moved to southeast MO around 1843. After about ten years Irvin's father Thompson followed them to Iron County, MO and later to Wayne County, MO.

Irwin was a farmer and owned a sawmill in Des Arc which he sold to G. W. Graves in 1890 for one thousand dollars. He was involved in a number of land transfers in Wayne County. One of the deeds reflected an understanding between Irvin George and his father, Thompson, in which Irvin would have a parcel of land for a nominal cost and would provide elder care for Thompson. It was signed in 1880 by Thompson and his second wife, Sallie E. Foquaide.

Irvin died in 1895 of injuries resulting from a very serious accident in 1894 at a saw mill in Wayne County. Carol Vaughan remembers this version as told by her grandfather, Walter C. Dunnegan. "Granddaddy said that people would come to their house and cut off patches of their own skin to graft onto his father's are flesh in hopes that his wounds would heal. He was at home in bed a long time before he died." The following death notice in the Iron County Register paints an even more agonizing and painful death.

I. G. Dunnegan, who was scalded in a wreck on a log boom below Poplar Bluff last summer, was brought home last winter. All the flesh was burned off his legs from his hip down. He has suffered death a thousand times, and of late he suffered so much you could hear him hollow and take on for some distance. So the Doctors concluded to cut off one of his lets, and Sunday, Drs. Petit, Gay, Tates and Sebastian amputated his leg, but he only lived until night. Poor man! He is better off. May God help his bereaved widow and children! He will be buried at Des Arc Tuesday. June 17, 1895

James A. Tate was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg, MS on July 3, 1863. He enlisted at Licking, MO on January 1862, Confederate 1st and 4th Consolidated Regiment. He was on the Company Muster Roll, November and December 1862. He was last paid on October 30, 1862 and for each two months until it shows him killed.

Very little is known about James Tate and Sarah A. Flowers Tate----especially James Tate. They were living in (Texas) near Licking, Missouri when the boys were born. According to the son, James C. Tate, his father was serving in the Army during the Civil War in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. His mother received word he was sick. She took the two small boys and a slave to drive the oxcart; two barrels of salt to use as money and went to Louisiana to see her husband. When they got there she was told he had died of small pox and already buried. That was when small pox was raging there. She came back to Missouri, and later married again.

Notes:

The state of Missouri was torn by differing politics during the Civil War. Julia A. Tate married John M. Boyles who fought for the Confederacy. Her older sister, Louisa A. Tate married William T. Tally who fought for the Union and was eventually imprisoned by the Confederacy at Andersonville, GA.

On Julia Death Certificate from the Department of Health - Division of Vital Statistics, State of Illinois, there appear to be some errors. It states that her father was John Tate and that she was born in Boonville, MO. This seems to be incorrect. Other documentation indicates that her father was Jahiel Douglas Tate and that she was born in Sherrill, Texas County, MO. The informant on the Death Certificate was her son, Stanley Boyles.

The following letters written in 1911 are of interest to us now, they are from H. E. Killian and written to Martin Van Buren Tate who then lived at Thatcher, AZ:

January 18, 1911

Dear Cousin,

I want to tell you how good it was to get a letter from you. Mart, I have been practicing medicine for 30 years. I am doing well. Got plenty to live on if I can take care of it. I own a 281 acre farm. Got it well fixed up, a good house and barn, plenty of stock on the farm, horses, cattle and hogs. I have 125 acres in cultivation. Make plenty to live on. I have four living children. 3 boys and one living girl, Georgie (C) Parr he wrote to us last night. He is selling goods at Collbran, doing very well. Artimus Daniel is a fine Physician. He lives at Hold, AL, about 140 miles. Smith W. (heare), Martin C. (E) Killian namesake lives in Meridian MS, he has the yards in Meridian, he is a Rail Road man. Claud D. Killian the babie is in Medical College in Birmingham and he making a Doctor. I think he will make a good one. We have 3 dead, Maud A., she died at 12 1/2 years. She was the best scoller of her age I ever saw. She could read Latin. It was the work thing I ever had to give her up. I thought I never could stand it. I want you to write me and tell me all the latest news from Kaufman County and all the people that I knew when I lived there and all about cousin Nimi and your children. V---Hamilton went back to Texas and died. I guess you head that Henry G. Hamilton died September the 5th day. He had consumption, he had 8 children. Uncle Maban Tate died 1874 or 1877. Grandfather Tate has been dead about 34 years, grandmother Tate has been dead about 27 years. I guess you heard about Nan's death. She died of consumption. She has been dead since August 6, 1876. I heard of Aunt Vinn's death but have never heard about your {a's death. Give my love to all your family.

Dear Cousin,

Yours of recent date, I was glad to hear from you. I have been busy for the last few days. Have had a lot of sickness in the naborhood. Mart how come you to go out so far West? I am 72 years in September, I am stout and in very good health. I am stout for a man that has done the work that I have for the last 41 years. Mart, I had 4 children by Nan and 3 by last wife. 2 boys and 2 girls by Nan and 2 boys (Martain) and Artemus Daniel. 2 boys by Mat and one girl Maud died at 12 years old and the first one at 11 months old. My babie will be 28 years old the 3rd of next December. He is in school at Birmingham. I am making a doctor of him. Cousin, all of the old Tates are dead. Most of them lived to be very old before they died. Uncle Aaron died 1892. I think Aunt Susannah Cunningham was the last of the family to die. Mart, I can't remember anything about your Pa's people. They did not live in Alabama. They lived in Warren County, TN. If you will write to Uncle James or Dave Cunningham they might give you some information about your family on your pa's side. This leaves us all well, there is but me and (Mat) since Claud went to Coledge. He will be home the last of April for 5 months more. I will close, write soon.
