    OBITUARY

    Register-Herald, Beckley, WV; 20 Dec 2013

Anna Lee Gadd, 88, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 17th, 2013, at Trinity Station Retirement Community, Flatwoods, Ky.

She was born October 5, 1925, at Princeton, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Bessie Reed Teaford; her former husband and father of her five children, Ben D. Shrewsbury; her husband Daniel P. Gadd; her son, David Alan Shrewsbury; and her sisters, Marion Hall, Ruth DeHart and Nell Wood.

She is survived by her children, Robert Shrewsbury (Diane) of Harker Heights, Texas, Elizabeth Pollastrini (Joe) of Scott Depot, Mary Walker (Rick) of Waynesburg, Pa., and Joann Bragg (Ralph) of Fayetteville; her grandchildren, Ryan Shrewsbury, Shannon Bishop, Sean Pollastrini, Dante Pollastrini, Benton Shrewsbury, Melissa Irons, Brent Walker, Kristin Smith, Jon-Erik Bragg and Tyler Bragg; 13 great-grandchildren and two on the way.

Anna Lee grew up in Lexington, Va., and Mullens, where she graduated from Mullens High School. She worked at the Bank of Mullens during and after high school. She married Ben D. Shrewsbury and, after he left the Army, they settled in Beckley and raised their five children. After divorcing, she later married Daniel P. Gadd, who died in 1977.

Education and learning were important. Anna Lee encouraged her children in their church and school activities ? choir, BYF, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts (she was a Cub Scout den mother for several years), Baptist camping and staff, and spelling bees. She started to Beckley College after being out of high school 22 years and raising five children. She graduated from Radford College in Virginia in 1972, the same year that David graduated from West Point and Mary graduated from high school. Her girls all graduated from college and Bob was in the Air Force 21 years and David in the Army for 20 years. Anna Lee continued her schooling until she received her Master's in Education. She taught reading for 12 years in Raleigh County Schools.

Anna Lee ran the Maxwell Hill Community Center and pool, taught Red Cross swimming lessons at Waterdale Pool on Valley Drive, Beckley, worked election poll places, school and church activities and community fairs.

Anna Lee not only had a "green thumb" but she was green to her elbows. She was a Master Gardener and could, and did, grow anything. She raised big gardens, canned, preserved, and froze everything, teaching the five of us how to do the same. We raised chickens and rabbits for eating. Anna Lee was a seamstress; she taught the girls to sew.

Anna Lee retired and returned to Lexington where she built a home near her sister Ruth on Kerrs Creek. She enjoyed her five wooded acres, feeding and watching birds, turkey, deer, and her pet grouse that ate from her hand. She loved hunting, was a member of the NRA and the National Federation of Turkey Hunters, and killed her share of squirrel, turkey and deer.

She liked to travel and made trips to Alaska and to the Holy Land. Myrtle Beach, S.C., was one of her favorite places. She had a home at Apache Campground in North Myrtle. She spent all summers enjoying sun, sand and friends. She loved early morning walks on the beach watching the sun rise and collecting shells and shark teeth.

Anna Lee was a Christian and an active member of the First Baptist Church, Beckley, and the Kerrs Creek Baptist Church, Lexington, where she led the collection of all the items to fill shoeboxes for the Franklin Graham's Operation Christmas Child. She went for several years to Boone, N.C., and helped prepare boxes to be sent to other countries.

Anna Lee led a full and active life until she suffered a stroke in 2005. She moved into Trinity Station Retirement Community, Flatwoods, Ky., where she lived until her death.

The family is so appreciative of the care Anna Lee received from the staff at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland, Ky., every time she was hospitalized, and especially the loving card she received from all the staff and "her girls" at Trinity Station during her eight years, one month and seventeen days she lived there.

We also thank everyone from Community Hospice that provided care and support to our family and our mother during her final days.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 21st, at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pastor Delbert Walker will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice, Ashland Office, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Condolences may be sent to the family's guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.
