Maria Tate Sterrett Swecker, 92, of Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Center, formerly of Blue Grass, died Thursday evening, Dec. 22, 1994 at the center in Harrisonburg.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1902 at Rockbridge Baths, a daughter of Charles Reid and Angeline Wallace Dunlap Sterrett.

She was a member of the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church. She was a graduate of Farmville State Teachers' College which is now Longwood College. She was a member of the Highland Extension Club, and a member of the Highland Retired Teachers Association.

Her husband, Jennings Judy Swecker, died Jan. 13, 1962.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Judy Riddick of Franklin and Betty S. Abbott of Pulaski; four sons William S. of Stuarts Draft, George R. and Robert T., both of Monterey, and James L. Swecker of Beckley, W. Va.; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Swecker was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Swecker Crown on Sept. 7, 1980, and an infant son, Jennings Judy Swecker, Jr.

A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Dec. 26 in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, formerly the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. C. William Cox with burial in the Blue Grass Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, James Crown, Robert W. Abbott, Jr., Jesse J. Swecker, J.L. Swecker, John R. Swecker, Dr. William S. Swecker, Jr. adn David W. Kiser and W.C. Rexrode.

Honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.

OBITUARY

William Sterrett Swecker, 86, of Stuarts Draft, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Shenandoah House.

He was born on March 15, 1925, in Blue Grass, the son of the late Jennings Judy and Maria Tate (Sterrett) Swecker.

Mr. Swecker was a member and ordained elder of Finley Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 until 1946, and was quartermaster of a LST that landed on Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944. Additionally, Mr. Swecker reenlisted and served during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1953.

He was a graduate of Blue Grass High School and received a BS in animal husbandry from Virginia Tech. He formerly owned and operated Shenandoah Insurance Agency in Stuarts Draft.

Mr. Swecker is survived by his wife, Ann Stuart (McClure) Swecker, who he married on January 2, 1954; daughter, Mary Tate Swecker of Monterey; son, William S. Swecker Jr. of Blacksburg; two sisters, Betty Ann Abbott of Bedford and Mary Judy Riddick of Franklin; two brothers, George R. Swecker of Sunnyside Retirement Home in Harrisonburg, and James L. Swecker of Monterey; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Frances Celia Crown; and his brother, Robert T. Swecker. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Finley Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Don LaRue officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.

A private inurnment will be held in Blue Grass Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Finley Memorial Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 256, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477 or Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939. Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell is handling the arrangements.

George Reid Swecker,86 formerly of Monterey,passed away Saturday,Jan. 5,2013 at Sunnyside Retirement Community.

He was born in the Blue Grass Valley on May 2,1926, to the late Jennings Judy and Maria Tate (Sterrett) Swecker.

Mr. Swecker was a prominent farmer,part owner and longtime manager of Monterey Livestock Sales until his retirement in 1977. Additionally,he was active during those years in the Virginia Cattleman's Association.

At the age of 23, he joined the Blue Grass Valley Bank's Board of Directors filling the seat of his grandfather,
George Eagle Swecker. He served several terms as president over a span of 55 years.

A graduate of Blue Grass High School, he would later go on to serve several terms on the Highland County School Board. A devout Presbyterian,he was a member and elder in the former Crabbottom Presbyterian Church until closing in 1994, at which time he transferred membership to Monterey Presbyterian Church.

A master Mason,he was a member of Highland Lodge No.110 A.F. & A.M. Mr.Swecker was also a charter member and past member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club.

On Nov.7,1953,he married Nancy Pence (Simmons) Swecker,also of Blue Grass. She preceded him in death July 24,1998. He was also predeceased by a sister, Frances Celia Crown, and two brothers,William Sterrett Swecker and Robert Tate Swecker.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan Reid Swecker of Richmond and Elly Swecker of Harrisonburg; two beloved grandchildren, Brent Arbogast of Harrisonburg and Charlotte Arbogast of Richmond, two sisters, Betty Ann Abbott of Bedford and Mary Judy Riddick of Franklin; one brother,James L.Swecker of Monterey, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.Saturday,Jan.12,2013, at Monterey Presbyterian Church with the Revs.Melissa Litrel Harmon and C.William :Bill" officiating.Burial will follow in the Blue Grass Cemetery.

The family will recieve friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday,Jan.11,2013, at Obaugh Funeral home in McDowell.
