BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

James Willson McClung is the son of Andrew Alexander McClung and Estaline Montgomery Willson. He married Demaris Irene Berry on 9 May 1894.

James had some serious problems with his employer but following his time served, he turned out a record amount of historical cemetery surveys, old homes surveys built before 1860, with photographs of them, old churches, court records, etc. for Rockbridge County's Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) in about 1936.

He also wrote a book called the Historical Significance of Rockbridge County, Virginia, Staunton, VA, McClure Co., Inc, 1939 and 1979. This book is available to view on Heritage Quest thorough local libraries, using your library card number. It contains many W.P.A. surveys of the old homes, cemetery, court records, individuals, local history, etc.

According to the Foundations of the Past, The WPA Historical Inventory Project in Virginia by Edward D. C. Campbell, Jr., and Stacy Gibbons Moore online at the Library of Virginia: There were a total of 621 W.P.A. reports or surveys in Rockbridge County and James prepared 534 of them.

Born in 1866 to a farm family in Brownsburg, a resident of Lexington for decades, and treasurer and deacon of the Lexington Presbyterian Church, McClung already knew and appreciated much about Rockbridge County.

He worked at the Rockbridge National Bank in Lexington, People's National Bank and treasurer of Virginia Military Institute. He was led astray in the funds at the latter and pleaded guilty to all charges mounting to just under $31,000. with interest over a period of many years. He paid back the money through the sale of his property and served a year in the Virginia State Penitentiary, with one year off for good behavior.

Thus by the mid-1930s McClung found himself one of many applicants for WPA employment assistance. Assigned to the Virginia Historical Inventory Project, he began collecting materials in March 1936 and by early June was already submitting detailed reports to his district supervisor, William A. Moon Jr., in Waynesboro. Moon was responsible for field-workers in fifteen different counties and, like so many other WPA employees, brought several skills to his tasks. He was an avid historian and had developed a considerable knowledge of rural public libraries. Moon was later temporarily assigned to Richmond as the project's statewide supervisor.

What Moon may have thought of his new staff member is not known. In any case, as McClung went about his work, it must at times have been painfully difficult to face his Lexington and Rockbridge neighbors. Despite that, he gamely asked for the community's assistance, especially welcoming "any suggestions" and "any historical data which anyone may have."

Like every other field-worker's, McClung's files underwent editorial scrutiny. He apparently submitted his last research notes in the autumn of 1937, at which point the regional and Richmond offices organized the hundreds of files and made corrections or additions, sometimes by retyping pages, and sometimes by simply pasting revisions onto an earlier draft. McClung, like many of his fellow WPA workers, was justifiably proud of his accomplishment--so proud, in fact, that a year and a half later, in 1939, he published an abbreviated sampling of his work. In the book's preface he commented that he had completed some 700 reports, whereas the Rockbridge County files attributed to McClung total 534. That was not a remarkable discrepancy. Files were often declined and far more often merged. What is remarkable is that McClung completed so much within as few as eighteen to twenty months. Perhaps it was a restitution of sorts. Remarkable, too, is that when he died in 1945 his obituaries made no mention of his singular feat, or of his crime.

James Willson McClung wrote about his family home, he called the old home of Andrew A. McClung, located about midway between Fairfield and Brownsburg, in Rockbridge Co., VA, about 1/4 mile from the raod, built 1740 - 1910. Samuel Willson (1st owner) sold it to Isaac R. Jordan in about 1750. Jordan built the home around 1760 and following his death, it was sold to Andrew A. McClung. The deed was recorded 3 Jan 1861 in Rockbridge Co., VA Deed Book HH, page 374. Originally built as a log structure, 2 stories tall. About 1760, a brick addition, 2 stories was added on. James W. McClung was born and raised in this house. OBITUARY

From Find A Grave

The funeral of Professor Robert Sterrett, 53, who died Friday at his home at Monterey following a heart attack, was held at 4 p.m. yesterday at the residence. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. E. Johnson of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev., J. H. Light of the Methodist Church.

For the past six years he had been principal of the Monterey High School. Prior to that he was mathematics instructor at Staunton Military Academy. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss. Martha Jones, sister of State Treasurer Edwin B. Jones; two sons, Douglas and Robert, Jr. of Monterey; two brothers, S. Tate Sterrett, Staunton, and Felix F. Sterrett of Buena Vista, and a sister, Miss. Nannie K. Sterrett of Staunton. He was a son of the late Samuel W. and Ida Kincaid Sterrett.

The News Gazette; Lexington VA; 1 April 1964

Mrs. Sterrett Thompson Miller, 83, died at a nursing home in Dunn Loring Saturday.

A native of Rockbridge County, she was a daughter of the late Stuart Thompson and Rebecca [Isabella] Sterrett Thompson.

She was a member of the Old Stone Presbyterian at Timber Ridge.

Surviving her are four daughters, Mrs. H.D. Fox of Fairfield; Miss Isabella Miller of Alexander; Mrs. Thomas G. Camp of Silver Springs, Md., and Mrs. Roger H. Seward of Elberton; two sons, Stuart T. Miller of Summit, N.J. and E. L. Miller, Jr. of Fairfield; and one sister, Mrs. D. E. Brady of Glasgow.

A funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at Old Stone Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Robert Tabscott officiated.

Mrs. Tate Thompson, 90, of Rt. 1, Glasgow died Thursday in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was the wife of the late Douglas Ellinipsico Brady.

A native of Rockbridge County, she was born April 18, 1883 and was the daughter of the late Stuart T. Thompson and Isabelle Sterrett Thompson.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas Ellinipsico Brady, Jr. of Lexington and Tate T. Brady of Richmond and four grandchildren.

The Rev. Ray Hanson, Jr. conducted a funeral service Saturday at 11 a.m. in Falling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Timber Ridge

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Sterrett, Jr. accompanied by Mr. William Sterrett of Rockbridge Baths, drove to Hot Springs Saturday to attend funeral services for Mr. Lyle Sterrett. Mr. Sterrett, who grew up on Timber Ridge, and who returned for frequent visits to his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Sterrett, is particularly remembered here for his beautiful voice; it having been his custom to serve as guest soloist in the Stone Church choir whenever he was available. It is of interest to his friends to learn that the doctors who attended him in the short and violent illness which preceded his death express deep appreciation to his family for permitting an autopsy, which they say, taught them much which will be of value to doctors in handling other cases such as his.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Presbyterian Church here, with the Rev. R. E. Watts officiating. Burial will be in the Emporia Cemetery.

OBITUARY

Richmond Times-Dispatch; 29 May 1915

James Reid Sterrett died of blood poisoning yesterday morning at 11 o'clock at Grace Hospital. He was employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in bridge construction work at Louisa, Ky. and underwent about two months ago, in the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital at Huntington, W.Va., an operation on the cartilage of the knee. A week ago he was brought to Richmond.

The funeral services will take place this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in the chapel of Union Theological Seminary, and will be conducted by Rev. Thomas C. Johnson, D.D. of the Seminary faculty, assisted by Rev. R.C. Stribling, D.D. of Petersburg. The burial will be in Hollywood.

Mr. Sterrett is survived by his wife, who was Miss. Frances Houston, of Buchanan, Va.; also by his mother, Mrs. Laura Sterrett, the matron at Union Theological Seminary, and three sisters, Misses. Isabel and Alice Sterrett of Ginter Park, and Mrs. Joseph B. Bailey of Emporia, and four brothers Frank and Edwin Sterrett of Richmond, and Mac and Thornton Sterrett of Lexington. He was twenty-seven years of age.

Isabel Sterrett Anderson, 91, of Staunton, widow of the Rev. Alden Scott Anderson, died Thursday afternoon in King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton.

She was born on May 14, 1890, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Madison McClung Sterrett and Laura Smith Sterrett. Mrs. Anderson was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Alden S. Anderson, Jr. of Staunton; two daughters, Mrs. Isabel McSwain of Staunton and Mrs. Annie Laurie Vanstone of Nashville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A service was conducted Sunday afternoon in the chapel of Lexington Presbyterian Church by Dr. J.H.J. Vernon and Dr. L. Randolph Harrison. Burial was in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.

Alice Sterrett Davidson of Lexington died Sunday in Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

A native of Rockbridge County and a graduate of Madison College. Mrs. Davidson started her teaching career in the public school system of Richmond. She later taught for many years in the schools of Rockbridge County and Buena Vista.

During World War I, she served with the YMCA in France and was a member of the Women's Overseas League.

Mrs. Davidson was the daughter of the late M. M. Sterrett and Annie Smith Sterrett. She was the wife of the late John K. Davidson.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Cornelia D. Kraft of Islip, New York; two sons John K. Davidson, Jr. of Hampton and Frank S. Davidson of Austin, Travis County, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Isabel S. Anderson of Staunton; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Edwin H. Sterret, aged 47, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Atlanta [Athens], Ga., on Feb. 17. He was a native of Rockbridge county, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mc. M. Sterrett.

Mr. Sterrett is survived by his wife, the former Miss Annie [Anna] Marie Fudge, of Covington, two sons, Edwin H. Sterrett, Jr. of the Army Air Corps, stationed at Montgomery, Ala., and Andrew Fudge Sterrett, stationed at the Army Air Base in Richmond, and one daughter, Miss Susie Sterrett. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alden S. Anderson and Mrs. John K. Davidson of Lexington, and two brothers, Mc. M. Sterrett of Brownsburg and Thornton W. Sterrett of Indianapolis, Ind.

He was buried in Montgomery, W. Va., on Feb. 20. Those attending the funeral from Rockbridge county were Mrs. Alden S. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Mc. M. Sterrett, Miss Cornelia Davidson and Mr. and Mrs. Locke White.

Madison McClung Sterrett, 75, prominent Rockbridge farmer and civic leader, died last Wednesday at his home near Brownsburg.

A descendant of Archibald Alexander, one of the early settlers of Rockbridge County, Mr. Sterrett was born in Rockbridge Oct. 1, 1899 and was the son of the late Madison McClung Sterrett and Laura Smith Sterrett.

At the time of his death he was the senior partner of the M.M. Sterrett and Son Dairy Farm, one of the largest dairy operations in the county.

In 1927 Mr. Sterrett purchased the farm near Brownsburg which had been part of the extensive acerage of his great-grandfather, Samuel Willson. Willson had made major additions to the house on the property, which according to family records was built in 1746 and which was known in earlier years as Mulberry Grove.

In the depression years of the 1930s, while the family continued to operate a farm, Mr. Sterrett was associated for a period with the Civilian Conservation Corps in beautification work along the Skyline Drive.

He converted his general farming operation into a dairy farm in 1947.

Mr. Sterrett's community service included a period of eight years, from 1952 to 1960, as trustee from Walkers Creek District on the Rockbridge County School Board.

He was a member of the Lexington advisory board of the First National Exchange Bank and of the predecessor board of the Peoples National Bank of Lexington from 1953 to 1973.

Mr. Sterrett had served as chairman of the board of deacons of New Providence Presbyterian Church, had been a past president of the Brownsburg Ruritan Club, and had been a member for 12 years of the board of Rockbridge Farmers Cooperative.

He was elected in 1946 a director from Walkers Creek on the board of the Rockbridge Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and served on the board until his retirement in March 1974. He had been a director of the Rockbridge Artifical Breeding Association and a member of the Rockbridge-Alleghany Dairy Herd Improvement Association.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Morton Sterrett; a son, Madison McClung Sterrett Jr. of Brownsburg; a daughter, Mrs. Bruce Alexander Lipscomb of Fairfield; two sisters, Mrs. John K. Davidson of Lexington and Mrs. Alden S. Anderson of Staunton; and four grandchildren.

The Rev. David Coblentz conducted a funeral service Friday at 11 a.m. in New Providence Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Funeral services for Thornton W. Sterrett, 55, of 2220 Albans, executive general manager of mortgage loan and investment division of the southwest home office of the Prudential Insurance Co., will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

He died in his home Sunday night.

Sterrett had been with the Houston office since its opening in 1951. He joined the Prudential, Atlanta, Ga., office in 1929 and was there for nine years in the company's first farm loan office

From Atlanta he went to Indianapolis as the company's farm loan manager; then to the New York, office.

He was a native of Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Barbara Sterrett, two daughters, Mary Lewis Sterrett, both of Houston, and Mrs. John L. Ballantyne, Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. John K. Davidson, Lexington, Va. and Mrs. Alden Anderson, Staunton, Va., a brother M.N. Sterrett, Raphine, Va., and two grandchildren.

Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles L. King officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Stettgest-Kopt Co.

Mrs. Martha "Mattie" Sterrett Parkins, 89, formerly of Lexington, died Feb. 10 at the residence of her son, John A. Parkins, in Newark, Del. She had lived at her son's residence for the last nine years.

Mrs. Parkins, the widow of Capt. S. Parkins of Dickerson, Md., was born in Rockbridge County Aug. 31, 1886, the daughter of the late Ira Franklin Sterrett and Isabel MacKey Sterrett. Her late brother, John D. Sterrett, was prominent in local affairs.

Before leaving Rockbridge in 1914, Mrs. Parkins was a member of Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church. She often returned to the area to visit friends and relatives.
As a result of age and failing health she was unable to return to Lexington since a visit in 1972, when her grandsons John A. Parkins, Jr. and Thomas W. Parkins were graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law and Virginia Military Institute respectively.

She is survived by four sons, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Burial was beside her late husband in Arlington National Cemetery. The services, which included a military honor guard were attended by Mr. and Mrs. John D. Sterrett, Jr. of Williamsburg and J. Robert Sterrett of Hampton, both recently of Lexington.

John Douglas Sterrett, 82, of Rt. 5 Lexington died Tuesday at the Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility.
Born Feb. 19, 1889 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Ira Franklin Sterrett adn Isabel Dunlap MacKey Sterrett.

Mr. Sterrett was a member of the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church and served as elder and elder emeritus in the church for 63 years. He was one of the organizers and past president of the Rockbridge Farmers Cooperative. Mr. Sterrett was a former dairy farmer.

Mr. Sterrett developed the Meadowview subdivision. He was chairman of the Rockbridge County Planning Commission from Jan.1 1959 to Jan. 1 1962. A former Rotarian, he was past president of the Rockbridge Mutual Fire Insurance Co.

Surviving are two sons, John D. Sterrett, Jr. of Wytheville and James Robert Sterrett of Hampton; a sister Mrs. Mattie Reid Parkins of Newark, Del; five grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

The Rev. John Stanley and the Rev. William Ramkey will conduct a funeral service tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Timber Ridge "Old Stone" Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Timber Ridge "Old Stone" Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

OBITUARY

The Lexington Gazette; 1 April 1959

Mr. William Robert Sterrett, Rockbridge Baths, Augusta County, Virginia, died at his home March 27, 1959, at 5:30 a.m. He was born in Rockbridge County, October 18, 1895, a son of the late Angeline Wallace Dunlap and Charles Reid Sterrett. He lived his lifetime in the country.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise G. Sterrett, Rockbridge Baths; one daughter, Mrs. E.I. Campbell, Jr., Glasgow; two sons, W.M. Sterrett, Richmond; and John R. Sterrett, Buena Vista. Five sisters, Mrs. S.F. Patterson, Sr., Mrs. J.W. Buchanan, both of Brownsburg; Mrs. G.F. Parramore, Cheriton, Virginia; Mrs. J.J. Swecker, Bluegrass, Virginia; and Mrs. Noel Duff, Grand Junction, Colorado. Also surviving are three grandsons and three granddaughters.

Funeral services were conducted at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church on March 29, 1959 at 4:00 p.m. with interment in the church cemetery. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. Don L. Bartley.

Mr. Sterrett was a member and deacon of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church of Rockbridge Baths, a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, former member of the Draft Board, member of Rockbridge County School Board for nine years, charter member of the Rockbridge Baths Ruritan Club, long time member of the Brownsburg Telephone Exchange, Assistant Postmaster of Rockbridge Baths, owner of Anderson's store from 1949-1952, and a farmer of considerable land in the community.

Among those attending the funeral from a distance were Dr. C.F. Irons and his brother Ben Irons of Greenville, North Caroline; Mrs. J.A. Patterson, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Mrs. Wallace Lynn, Occaquan, Virginia; Mr. and Mrs. J.J. OBITUARY

Highland Recorder, Monterey, VA; 6 January 1995

Maria Tate Sterrett Swecker, 92, of Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Center, formerly of Blue Grass, died Thursday evening, Dec. 22, 1994 at the center in Harrisonburg.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1902 at Rockbridge Baths, a daughter of Charles Reid and Angeline Wallace Dunlap Sterrett.

She was a member of the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church. She was a graduate of Farmville State Teachers' College which is now Longwood College. She was a member of the Highland Extension Club, and a member of the Highland Retired Teachers Association.

Her husband, Jennings Judy Swecker, died Jan. 13, 1962.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Judy Riddick of Franklin and Betty S. Abbott of Pulaski; four sons William S. of Stuarts Draft, George R. and Robert T., both of Monterey, and James L. Swecker of Beckley, W. Va.; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Swecker was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Swecker Crown on Sept. 7, 1980, and an infant son, Jennings Judy Swecker, Jr.

A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Dec. 26 in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, formerly the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. C. William Cox with burial in the Blue Grass Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, James Crown, Robert W. Abbott, Jr., Jesse J. Swecker, J.L. Swecker, John R. Swecker, Dr. William S. Swecker, Jr. adn David W. Kiser and W.C. Rexrode.

Honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Retirement Community, 100 Sunnyside Drive, Harrisonburg, Va 222801 or to charity of choice.
