Joseph H. Butts died 29 December 1909

Dr. Butts Dead. Dr. J. H. Butts, one of Tallahassee's prominent veterinary surgeons, passed into the Great Beyond Wednesday, at his home on South Calhoun Street, after a long continued illness resulting from rheumatism.

Dr. Butts, before his recent illness was one of the best veterinary surgeons in this section; he was also manager of the City Wood and Coal Company. Mrs. Butts, who was Miss Beulah Horton prior to her marriage to the doctor, will live with her sister and brother, Miss Maud Horton and William Horton, who have moved here from Minnesota. They will reside at the same residence, on South Calhoun Street.

Dr. Butts made many friends in and around Tallahassee, who mourn his departure. He was one ever thoughtful of others, kind and big hearted.

The funeral took place from their home yesterday morning.

James Royal Barlow was the son of Joseph Henry Butts and Mary Safronia Barlow. He had a brother, Forrest Vinton and a sister, Hazel Lucille. Joseph and Mary divorced and as adults, the two brothers legally changed their surname from Butts to Barlow.

Notes:

Forrest was born Forrest V. Butts to Joseph H. Butts and Mary Barlow Butts in Greenwood County, KS. Her parents divorced in 1896 and the mother and three kids moved to OK. Mother remarried John L. Smouse. Forrest later for unknown reasons changed his name from Butts to his mother's maiden name Barlow.
