Notes:

He was first son of the first Virginia Hamman ancestor. Had 17 children. Lived in Montgomery Co. until 1830. After 1830 returned to Catawba Valley in Botetourt Co. Purchased Poage farm, which fronts Tinker Knob. In 1919 was owned by Rhodes Brothers. Received lands in East St. Louis, IL because of military service in the War of 1812. He served in Norfolk, VA during the spring and summer of 1814. Son, Griffin lived on these lands. John was member of Botetourt county library association. When he died, Dr. J. Hoffman Waugh of Baltimore Conference said John Hamman was the best informed man in Methodist Church in the Old Fincastle circuit.

Sgt. in artillery. Wounded at Gettysburg. Honorably discharged. While on summer vacation, visiting friends in Bedford, he was killed by Union soldiers at the base of Sharp Top of the Peaks of Otter. His friend, Henry Ewing, escaped unharmed. Troops were from General Hunter's army who was retreating from Lynchburg into the mountains after an encounter with General Jubal A. Early.
