    OBITUARY

    "Margaret Yow Bryan died Sunday, March 28, 2004, after battling pneumonia.

    A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday in Greensboro at Friends Home at Guilford. A graveside service is planned for 5 p.m. Friday at the Ahoskie Cemetery in Ahoskie.

    Born on Aug. 6, 1906, in Greensboro, she delighted in living life as fully as possible. She was very active in the PTA, holding state offices. Through her efforts, the first PTA on the Outer Banks at Ocracoke was started. She was an enthusiastic duplicate bridge player, attaining life master status and went on several tournament cruises with Charles Goren. In her mid-years, she became an avid golfer, was Club Ladies Champion for several years and scored a total of three holes-in-one.

    After her children went off to college, she returned to school and graduated with a bachelors degree from Chowan Community College when in her 60s. She, like her mother, traveled as often as possible, both in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. After her husband, William died, she led tours of Israel and the Biblical lands for several years. She also went on one of the first ecotours ever offered to Antarctica with Lynblad Expeditions, the oldest person on board.

    She spent several years in Florida and enjoyed serving as a volunteer at various parks and historical sites. A particular favorite was her volunteer work at the home site of author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

    She had three sons, all Eagle Scouts, Robert Samuel Bryan, William Melton Bryan and Floyd Talmadge Bryan; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by one son, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren."

    YOW GREENSBORO

    Rev. Howard Baach Yow Sept. 13, 1912 - May 21, 2013

    Rev. Howard Baach Yow, 100, of Greensboro, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 21, 2013. He was born in Guilford County on September 13, 1912, the second of six sons and a daughter, to Carl Hampton Yow and Lena Lydia Osborne Yow. He graduated from Guilford College and was happily married to Lalah Smith Yow until her death in 1992. He is survived by seven nieces, nine nephews and a large extended family.

    Howard and Lalah served the Society of Friends for 47 years at NC Quaker churches in Cedar Square, Kernersville, Wayne County, Hood Swamp, Pikesville, Winston-Salem, Liberty, Mount Airy, Dunn and Harmony at Winthrop. Additionally he served in Noblesville, Indiana and five years as Education Administrator of the Friends School in Kenya, West Africa.

    He was active in the Rotary Club and Boy Scouts. He was an avid reader, photographer, gardener, traveler, hunter, gunsmith, woodworker, long distance bicyclist, as well as an avid stock car race fan who attended all the Indy 500's during his ministry in Indiana.

    Howard's personal motto was: "Service Above Self" and he was especially proud of his ministerial part in the original planning, building and development of Friends Homes at Guilford; the family is very grateful for the loving care which he received from the staff there for the last 14 years of his life.

    Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Centre Friends Meeting, 325 East NC Hwy 62, Greensboro, NC 27406, with the Rev. Terry Venable officiating. Interment will be in the Centre Friends Cemetery followed by a brief reception in the church Fellowship Hall.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Centre Friends Meeting,PO Box 632, Randleman, NC 27317 or to Friends Homes at Guilford, 925 New Garden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home N. Elm St. is assisting the family.

    GREENSBORO - Thomas Byron Yow Sr. passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2011.

    A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, 2 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with Pastor Kevin Bauswell officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

    Thomas was born on March 19, 1918, one of seven children of Carl Hampton and Lena Osborne Yow. He served as a private in the US Army during WW II. He was employed with the Greensboro News-Record from 1936 until 1975 as Foreman of the Composing Room. Thomas was a lifetime member of the printers union, CWA Printing, Publishing and Media Workers. He also was a charter member of Spring Garden Friends Meeting and a lifetime member of the Society of Friends..

    Thomas was proud of his military service and his career in publishing. He loved his family, driving road trips, his church, Ford automobiles, the beach, country music, NASCAR racing, "No mercy" checkers, the Democratic Party, construction projects and his home. He was fiercely independent to his last day.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 72 years, Vardelle D. Yow; one brother, Rev. Howard Yow of Friends Home; two sons, Thomas B. Yow Jr. and Barry D. Yow and wife Mary Ann, all of Asheboro, NC; two daughters, Brenda Y. Parker and husband Dr. H.R. Parker and Dianne Y. Porter and husband James, all of Greensboro, NC; four grandsons; Herman R. Parker III and wife Sonya of Madison, NC, Robert E. Parker of East Lansing, MI, Stiles and Keillor Fifield, both of Greensboro, NC and Cheryl Parker, widow of grandson Phillip Parker who predeceased him, of Summerfield, NC; seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

    OBITUARY

    The Rev. Carl Jay Yow, 89, formerly of Belvidere, died Friday morning, Feb. 12, 2010, in Riverside Convalescence Center in Smithfield, Va.

    Born in Guilford County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Carl Hampton and Lena Osborne Yow. He served as a United Methodist minister for 31 years after beginning his ministry with Piney Woods Friends Meeting in Belvidere. He later served the King George (VA) Charge, Drummondtown Charge in Accomac, Va., North Garden (VA) Charge, Elkton (VA) Charge, Hickory UMC in Chesapeake, Ettrick UMC in Petersburg, Va., Sherbourne Ave. UMC in Richmond, Va., Weste End UMC in Roanoke, Va., Shiloh UMC in Montpelier, Va., Rocky Mount UMC in Virginia and Aldersgate UMC in Charlottesville, Va.

    He was a member of the United Methodist Conference of Virginia, graduated from Duke Divinity School, volunteered with the American Cancer Society, was a Ruritan and a life member of the National Rifle Association.

    Survivors include his wife, Merle Mae Briggs Yow; two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca Mae Crabill and the Rev. Ralph Crabill of Luray, Va., and Lena Merle Grant and Bill of Chesapeake; three sons and their wives, Robert Briggs Yow and Sue of Chinquapin, N.C., Carl Jay Yow Jr. and Darlene of Oak Ridge, N.C., and John Henry Yow and Connie of Carrollton, Va.; two brothers, the Rev. Howard B. Yow and Thomas B. Yow, both of Greensboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

    The family will receive friends Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services in Hertford, N.C. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Edenton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater officiating.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Edenton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Edenton, NC 27932. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services of Hertford, N.C., is serving the Yow family.

    OBITUARY

    CAROLE ANNE SWANEY, 64, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at her home.

    Born on April 24, 1950 in Muenchen, Germany, she was one of four children born to Kenneth Grayson and Anne (Price) Swaney. She resided at the State Hospital in Parsons, Kansas from 1958 to 1970. She then resided at the St. Paul Manor in St. Paul Kansas. In 1992, Carole moved to the Focus Developmental Center in Winfield where she lived until 1998 and the moved to Southwind where she has resided since.

    Carole loved arts and crafts and spending time with her friends and caregivers.

    Her family includes: Her sisters: Kathy Muller of Brothell, WA; and Barbara Roberts of Soddy Daisy, TN; Her nieces and nephews and her caregivers and guardians at Southwind. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Kenneth Grayson Swaney, Jr.

    Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, August 11, 2014 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Carole will be laid to rest at a later date in Greensboro, North Carolina.
