    OBITUARY

Bristol Herald Courier, 28 August 2015

Anne Elizabeth "Lib" Whiteaker Durham Anne Elizabeth "Lib" Whiteaker Durham died on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at the Bristol Regional Hospital.

She was born on November 8, 1911, in Abingdon, Virginia, the daughter of Charles Alexander Whiteaker and Ollie Armstead Riddle. She married Charlie Durham in May 1941, and they did not have any children, but she had many nieces, nephews and grand-kin who loved to call her Aunt Lib.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Charlie in 1971, six brothers, and three sisters. Survivors on her Whiteaker side include several nieces and nephews, Dorothy DeLoach from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Jerry Donald Whiteaker, Austin, Texas, Frankie Gene Whiteaker and Martha Ann Whiteaker Kessee, Abingdon, Virginia, and Charles Franklin Whiteaker, Bristol, Virginia. On Charlie's side of the family there are seven surviving nieces and nephews, one brother in law, and 27 + grand-kin.

All her life, Lib was firm in her convictions; she was a strong competitor - enjoyed games both physical and mental. Solving puzzles was fun, not work. Lib always wore a smile and had a bright outlook upon life, which may account for her longevity. She enjoyed working in her garden, traveling, and being with people. Lib was a hard working, loving, caring woman who had talent and a particular affinity for young children. Kim Duff Redden and the Odell girls experienced that loving care during family crises.

She lived by herself in her home, and up until she was 100 years old, she cleaned her house and cooked all of her meals. Late in life, she usually made enough dinner to share with her next door neighbor Jim Odell. A testament to her knowledge and cooking ability was made by the Rev. Donald Young of Russell, Kentucky at a Duff family Christmas gathering when he stated every year, "That is the smoothest, best tasting Egg Nog that I have ever drank". Lib was blessed with an excellent memory, and could tell you the birthdays for all of her relatives. She was as sharp as a tack even in her old age.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Condolences and memories may be left for the family at akardfuneralhome.com Akard Funeral Home is serving the Durham family.
