    OBITUARY

    Curtis Lee Altizer, the son of Ralph M. and Belva L. (Winebarger) Altizer, was born October 18, 1946, in Bishop, Virginia, and passed away December 3, 2003, at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa. he was 57 years old.

    As a young boy, Curt lived in Bishop until he was 9 years old. He moved with his family to Tazewell, Virginia, where he graduated from high school in 1964. He attended four years at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served his country for four years including a tour of duty in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart.

    On June 23, 1973, Curt was united in marriage to Susan Swigart at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. To this union, Tricia and Todd were born.

    Curt and his brothers had formerly operated the Altizer Construction Company in Virginia. Later he operated the Altizer Construction Company in the Shenandoah area. For a few years, Curt was associated with Job Service for the State of Iowa. He was also employed by Eaton Manufacturing Company in Shenandoah for many years.

    Being an avid outdoorsman as well as a carpenter, Curt enjoyed hunting and working on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, where he put in countless hours helping to develop the trail, especially in decking the bridges. He enjoyed riding his bicycle on the Trace and participated in several RAGBRI rides across Iowa. Curt often spent hours cutting wood for the fireplace at home. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan. He also enjoyed spending time in their yard and garden. Curt was a history buff with a great interest in the Civil War and researched their family history. He was a member of American Legion Post #88, a board member of Wabash Trace Nature Trail, a participant in the Southwest Iowa Theatre Group and appeared in Dear Iowa and To Kill a Mockingbird.

    Preceding Curt in death were his father, Ralph Altizer; brother, Wayne Altizer; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Vernon and Ruth Swigart; and brother-in-law, Bill Combs.
    Survivors include his wife, Sue Altizer of Shenandoah; daughter, Tricia Altizer of Maryville, Missouri; son, Todd Altizer of the home; and mother,Belva Bowman of Cincinnati, Ohio. Also surviving are his sisters, Peggy Combs of Cincinnati and Marie Mahn and her husband, Jack, of Orlando, Florida; brother, Tom Altizer and his wife, Charlotte, of Manassas, Virginia; brother-in-law, Gary Swigart and his wife, Claudia, of Sidney, Iowa; plus many other relatives and friends.
