  1. 1.  Major Charles Campbell was born ca 1722, Ulster Ireland; died 17 Mar 1767, Augusta Co. VA.

    Notes:

    He was one of the early settlers in Augusta Co. VA and part of the Beverly Manor settlement. The first Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia arrived in the 1720's primarily from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Eastern Virginia. Some were German-born or the Pennsylvania-born children of German-speaking Protestant immigrants from the Palatinate and other areas bordering the Rhine River. These were Lutheran, Reformed, or Brethren. The greatest numbers of early Augusta settlers were from the province of Ulster in the north of Ireland, or were the Pennsylvania and Maryland-born children of these Ulster Scots or Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Many early settlers took up land on the 112,000-acre tract that the colonial government granted to William Beverley, later referred to as "Beverley Manor".

    He was the son of Patrick Campbell, Sr. who was granted 212 acres, 21 February, 1738 in Beverley Manor,, from William Beverley; Patrick's land was from Wm.     His will was dated 4 AUG 1761 in Augusta County, VA and was probated 17 MAR 1767.

    Charles married Margaret Buchanan 1744, Augusta Co. VA. Margaret was born ca 1723, Ulster Ireland or Orange Co. VA; died 1777, Augusta Co. VA. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    She was sister to General William Campbell (1745 ? August 22, 1781) the Revolutionary War hero of such battles as King?s Mountain, Guilford Court House, and many campaigns against area Loyalists. He inherited the large "Buffalo LIck" tract of land in VA from his father, Charles Campbell. He may also have received a large grant of land for his military service. He was married to Elizabeth Henry, one of Patrick Henry's many sisters.
