Excerpt from Tate Families of the Southern States, Volume II, 1984, by Laura W. Mentzel & Ethel S. Updike

He was a Corporal in Company H. of the 35th Infantry in the confederate Army and served during the Civil War. He was wounded in the wrist and side during the battle of Shiloh. At the time of his second marriage he was rather an old man, and it was said that the only reason the young lady married him was that he was getting a pension and she wanted the money. After a while, Hattie S. Tate, his daughter and my grandmother brought him home to her own house and cared for him until his death in 1908.

[Note: The census taker wrote the last name as Delancy for all of the members, but this is definitely the Dolina family based on the names of the children, their ages and birthplaces. I'm still trying to figure out how Rhoda (Argie) became Paptolana. She was the one who gave the information. I'm wondering if she had a sense of humor and gave a made-up name to see if the person would put it down. I located the family by searching for Paul since he had been born in OK and the later children were born in McDowell Co. WV.

At times the family used the name Delancy. Regina Lauer, John's great granddaughter said their family pronounced the name Delaney which was close to the pronunciation of Delancy. Frank has 2 KY birth certificates, his first one with the name Franklin Delancy and the other several years later as Franklin Dolina. June used the name Delancy on her marriage certificate in 1943, but her sister Helen used Dolina on her marriage certificate in 1943. Both sisters were married in Norfolk, VA within a few months of each other. And to make things even more confusing, Rhoda is listed as Ruth on some records.

The Oklahoma branch of the family, the brother who adopted three of John's children after their death, pronounced the name "Doe-line-a", but Robert Dolina, told his children his father pronounced the name "Doe-lee-na."]

END OF LIFE MYSTERY

At least 4 people contacted me trying to locate Maryo and her heirs regarding mineral rights on land in Oklahoma. They had investigated and could find no record of her death.

Recently Harwell Field Services contacted me, but I could provide no information beyond what I had on the website. They found Maryo had been living as Emma Reidt in court documents according to a probate document for Grady County, OK dated 21 Feb 2018. They kindly shared the document with me so I could have her death date.

Now the mystery, why was Maryo living under another name at the end of her life? The social security record has the correct death date, but the date of birth is different, making her older than she actually was. According to CA birth records, she was born 26 Oct 1934 in Tulare CA. Emma's DOB is 13 Sep 1926.

Maryo's place of residence was 1037 Saint Gertrude Pl, Santa Ana CA, which according to real estate records she owned and purchased around 1990. Her brother, Donald, at some point lived there as a renter. Then Emma C. Reidt is listed as the occupant as a renter. Her occupation was given as Machine Operators, Assemblers, and Inspectors Occupations. The home was sold 21 Dec 2009 according to real estate records. Maryo/Emma died less than one month later.

In the phone book white pages for Santa Ana she was listed as Emma Reidt.

Emma was listed on the Orange County Coroner Indigent List of Unclaimed Persons when next of kin was never located. When all effort to find family was exhausted, the deceased loved one was generally buried or cremated at the expense of the respective governmental agency.

Donald E. Tate, 20, Costa Mesa: Allen L. Shaw, 19, Santa Ana, and Jerry C. Harrington,: 21, Long Beach, pleaded innocent to five counts, each that they conspired to steal patio furniture. Their trials will start Sept. 8. Maryo LaVonne Tate, sister of Donald Tate, filed petition for dismissal of the counts against her. Arguments in her case were The four are accused of pilfering lawn furniture from patios in Newport Beach, Santa Ana and Long Beach. The four were arrested at Harrington's home at' 177 Pomona Ave., Long Beach, where police recovered patio furniture which filled four trucks.

Three years probation was given to Maryo LaVonne Tate, 18, of Costa Mesa, who had pleaded guilty to petty theft charges. Suspended sentences of a year in jail were ordered for Allen Lee Shaw, 19, of Santa Ana, and Gerald Clinton Harrington, 21, of Long Beach. Both pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit petty theft. The suspensions will be for three-year periods during which time the two young men must comply with usual probation requirements.

OBITUARY

Graveside services for Opal Hinson, 78, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park with Mike Pryor officiating. She died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002.

She was born June 26, 1923, in Lindsey, Okla., and married Webb Hinson in 1949 in Corrales, N.M. He died June 3, 1983. She was a homemaker and attended Trinity Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Pickelsimer of McKinney; two sisters, Catherine Byar of Amarillo and Helen Dotson of Hurrican Mills, Tenn.; a brother, John Wilson Tate of Texarkana; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home of Lubbock.

OBITUARY

Former Anchorage resident Clarence C. "Scotty" Tate, 70, died of heart failure July 18 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. A funeral was held at Demaray's Gooding Chapel in Gooding, Idaho. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Tate was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Kimberly, Idaho, the son of Ernest and Lou Vernia Savage Tate.

He attended school in Kimberly and Gooding. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. After the war, he became a chef and worked at various restaurants on the West Coast and in Las Vegas as an executive chef. In 1965, he moved to Alaska, where he worked as an executive chef in Fairbanks, Juneau and Anchorage, for hospitals and government agencies. He later managed food service camps for the trans-Alaskan pipeline.

He married Phyllis Staats Hill in Reno, Nev., on Dec. 21, 1969. From 1977 to 1985, he served as president and business manager of the Culinary Union in Anchorage. In 1985, he returned to Gooding to retire and enjoy hunting and fishing. He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and Gooding Elks Lodge #1745, and held memberships in various culinary societies. During winter months, he enjoyed feeding bread to the ducks and geese in the Hagerman Valley and lived his life to the fullest, according to his family.

Mr. Tate is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Gooding; a son, Michael of Anchorage; two stepsons, Dennis Hill of Everett, Wash., and Hugh Hill of Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; a sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and Lum Edwards of Gooding; two brothers, Raymond of Sun City, Ariz., and Dennis and his wife, Blanche, of Missoula, Mont.; and five grandchildren, Melissa of Anchorage, and Jason, Justin, Eric and Kristi Hill of Fort Huachuca.

OBITUARY

William Turnbull, a resident of Okmulgee, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in Tulsa at the age of 87. He was born September 15, 1927 in Henryetta, Oklahoma to John and Nellie (Tate) Turnbull.

William graduated from St. Michael's High School in Henryetta and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II. He worked for many years at American St. Gobain and later at Ramsey Chevrolet in the parts department. William was a Square Dance Caller for many years and had a great knowledge of sports. He moved to Haskell where he had resided for many years prior to returning to Okmulgee recently. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where over the years he had been very active in the parish. William was very proud of his Scottish heritage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lou Turnbull, three brothers, James, John and Alfred Turnbull and a sister, Dorothy Shaffer. Survivors include his children, Jeanette Taylor and husband Mike, Cynthia Turnbull and David Turnbull and wife Sue, all of Okmulgee, grandsons, Trey Turnbull and David Turnbull, both of Okmulgee and Brent Taylor of New York and a great grandchild, Stormy Turnbull. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 22, 2015 at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Josh Litwack officiating. A committal service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.

Alfred Wilson Turnbull, 84, of Claremore, Oklahoma passed away April 22, 2015 in Tulsa. He was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on January 26, 1931 to John and Nellie (Tate) Turnbull.

He is survived by his daughter: Vicky Moline; grandchildren, Aaron and Vanessa Moline; brother, William Turnbull and a host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Eva; his parents and siblings, John Turnbull, Jr., James Turnbull, Dorothy Shaffer and Hattie Turnbull.

Helen Jean Hunter of Sandyville, W.V., died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.V., following a long illness. She was 77.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. (ET) today at Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, W.V., with the Rev. Lawrence Conger Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery in Sandyville.

Mrs. Hunter was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Bryant, Okla., a daughter of the late John Wilburn and Rhoda Tate Dolina. She was a housewife and a Methodist.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Roy Hunter, and one son, Wayne Bryan Hunter.

She is survived by her son, Wilburn Ray Hunter of Sandyville; daughters Lois J. Wiles of Hyattsville, Md., Linda K. Riggs of Little Hocking, Ohio, and Darnell Hasty of Kenai; brothers Franklin, Donald, Paul, Jimmy, Pat and Mike Dolina; sisters June Ball, Sue Powers and Donna; 15 grandchildren, including James, Edward and Yvette Britton of Kenai; and 25 great-grandchildren.

June Faye Ball, 84, formerly of Crisfield, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Manokin Manor in Princess Anne where she had been a resident for several years.

Born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on November 14, 1928, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Rhoda Tate Dolina. She had been making her home in Crisfield since 1985. Her husband, George A. Ball, preceded her in death on September 8, 1998.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Crisfield Church of God.

She is survived by her siblings, Paul and Jimmy Dolina both of Riverdale, MD, Michael Dolina of Oklahoma, Sue Powers of West Virginia, and Donna Nichols of Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by many brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held Friday, February 15, 2013 at 12 PM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home where a viewing will be held one hour prior. The Rev. Philip Morris will officiate. Interment will follow in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.

Patrick Charles Dolina, 62 years old completed his earthly life on December 17, 2010 traveling instantly into the waiting arms of his Lord and Savior. Heavenly transformed, eternally young, healthy and with natural red hair, he donned his heavenly crown, to never look back on the ravages of suffering again.

How can you describe the life of a dynamic person like Pat in a few words? It can?t be done. He began life?s adventure on November 14, 1948 in #4 hollow in Premiere, West Virginia. He was originally named Jerry Lloyd which was changed to Pat after his adoption. He was the first twin born five minutes before his brother Mike. They were the thirteenth and fourteenth children born to John and Argie (Tate) Dolina. Pat's natural father was an electrician in the coal mines. Pat had a full and productive life in Tulsa being a member of the Order of the Demolays Delta chapter. He attended Lincoln Elementary, Horace Mann Jr. High and graduated with the Central High class of 1967. Pat loved sports and excelled in athletics. Wrestling and football was his game. Pat was baptized as a child, accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was a member of Boston Avenue Methodist Church. Pat was also a 32 degree Mason with Lodge 543 and a shriner.

Pat and Beverly Morse were married for 11 years and two daughters, Dawn and Kimberly were blessed from this union and they later divorced. Pat later remarried Valerie Sandejo who had two young boys with no Father. Pat adopted Jay and Corey and raised them as his own and was called "Dad" very affectionately. Pat and Valerie also later divorced.

Pat served for 18 years in the military in the U.S. Army branch achieving the rank of Sgt. Pat served in the communications area of the service and was very intelligent to learn and decode Morse Code messages from our foreign enemies. After 18 years in the service Pat went to work as a machinist for John Crane working his way up to shop foreman for 17 years. Pat also taught machine shop and CNC programming at the Tulsa VO Tech. Pat also assisted in establishing Superior Gauge Svc in the late 1970's.

Until his health began to fail him, Pat was a very active, independent and always a strong willed but responsible man. He could always be counted on and had a wonderful work ethic. Pat loved to watch OU and especially OSU football, The Dallas Cowboys as well as other favorite teams. Pat's passion was fishing and he could be found numerous weekends at Grand Lake on his house boat or bass fishing in the coves with his brother Mike.

Pat's personality could best be described as sweet, stubborn, funny, loving and very generous to others!!! He would do anything for a friend or a relative. Pat is reunited with many loved ones. He is preceded in death by four sisters, Bernice Patsey of Welch, Helen Hunter of Sandyville, W. Virginia, Joan Tolnay of Premiere, W. Pat is survived with many nieces and nephews and cousins that he enjoyed visiting and being around.

A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wed. December 22, 2010 at the Moore's Southlawn funeral home with Pat's earthly shell being cremated.
