    He was was an American artist and writer who was a co-founder of Sturm, Ruger, a firearms manufacturer. As a writer and artist, he was, during his life, perhaps best known for his two popular illustrated children's books, The Problem Fox and From Ambush to Zig-zag, both published before he graduated from Yale, and for his playboy bon vivant lifestyle among the rich and famous.

    Always sickly, Alexander Sturm became seriously ill in 1951 with hepatitis and died suddenly and unexpectedly. His wife, Paulina Longworth Sturm, died in 1957. Their daughter Joanna Sturm was raised by her grandmother Alice Roosevelt Longworth, who was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt.

    Notes:

    She is is a great-granddaughter of 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and the granddaughter of Alice Roosevelt Longworth. Left an orphan at a very young age, custody of Joanna was granted to her grandmother, Alice Longworth who doted on her granddaughter and the two were very close.

    In the past thirty years, six books have been written about Alice Roosevelt with Sturm being a significant cited resource.
    She has provided historical information and insights into the world of the Roosevelts of Hyde Park and Oyster Bay to virtually every Roosevelt biographer of the last thirty years, and she is credited by almost every professional TR biographer since 1970.
