In the Wakefield Manor court rolls for 1651 there is a record of a surrender of land in the Nethermoorecroft of the Northfield of Ossett for the use of Mark Whitteakers and his heirs

In the 1672 Hearth tax returns he is paying for 4 hearths.

In the name of God amen I Mark Whittaker of Osset in the County of Yorks Yeoman doo make this my will in forme following.

First I bequeath my soul to God and my body to decent buriall; and as touching my effects my will is that my oldest sonne Thomas shall have the revetion of the house wherein I now dwell & the buildings thereto belonging after my wive's death which I have surrendered accordingly, And also shall have after her death the farm thereto adjoining & all oth lodge farms which I now hold and have under the Right Honorable the Lord Brudnall and his lady; item I give the said Thomas the interest and Tomiant right of the farme wherein he now dwells which I hold under Mr James Oates in Ossett aforesaid, he paying the rent and and performing the covenants for the farme;

I give my second sonne Marke the farme at Hanging Heaton wherein he now dwells and which I hold under the Right Honorable the Earl of Halifax he paying the rents and performing the services for the farme;

And my will is that my wife take care of the further education of my sonne John now at Cambridge as shall be thought most fitt by my brother and other good friends;

Item I give to my sonne Robert three gross pounds [3 gross pounds is £432] for his portion; And to Dorothy wife of George Chaytor fourty pounds having already given her some considerable portion before;

Item I give to my daughter Mary three gross pounds [3 gross pounds is £432] for her portion;

His son Thomas Whiteaker is described as "junior" in the baptism entry for his first two children.

He and his son are the only Thomas Whiteakers in the Thornhill registers. I think it likely that the Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Whiteakers who died in 1678 is his wife rather than his son's wife. The sequence of his son's children doesn't really leave room for a death and remarriage.

Mr Thos Whitacres is listed in the 1672 Hearth Tax list for Thornhill as paying for 9 hearths. Again it is not certain if this refers to the father or the son.

IN the Thornhill Parish Registers for 1653 there is a note that Thomas Webster of Dewsbury, George Allan of Chickerley and Thomas Whiteakers of Dewsbury agreed to pay for any bastard children of Mary Brooke of Thornhillees. I take this to be him.

And in the Thornhill burial registers for 25 November 1663 there is a record of the burial of Peter Alcock, Mr Whitteakers' man in Thornhill.

I deduce from this entries that Thomas Whiteaker was from Dewsbury. His marriage was in Thornhill but there are no baptism entries in the Thornhill registers for his children. So it is likely that his wife came from Thornhill and he took on her Thornhill property while continuing to live in Dewsbury. I think it is also likely that his son Thomas took on the Thornhill house when he got married.

This leaves the problem of which Thomas Whiteaker of Dewsbury he was. It is not certain that this Thomas is the brother of Mark. I'm basing it partly on the 2 year interval and partly that only one Thomas Whitakers is having children bapt at Dewsbury at this time.

I take it that he is the Thomas Whiteakers who was married at Thornhill on 26 July 1654 and therefore the grandfather of the Mark who was baptised in 1677 who is probably the same as Mark of Baltimore.

Naming patterns support this indentification. This Thomas comes after an Elizabeth and a Mark. His presumed son Thomas of Thornhill had a daughter called Elizabeth followed by a son called Mark. Mark of Baltimore had children Elizabeth, followed by Thomas, followed by Mark.

There are several records submitted by members of the LDS church giving his date of birth as 10 February 1634.

I remain unclear about his marriage. There are lots of Thomas Whittaker and variants marriages. I suspect that Elizabeth Thomas died before 1666 and that the Elizabeth Whiteaker in the Thornhill registers is the wife of Thomas the younger of Thornhill.

It was attested by William Turner,gen, lords? tenant, that Thomas Whiteakers of Ossett, gen on 17 March 1685 surrendered into the lords hands the reversion, following the death of Mary Whiteakers of Streetside in Ossett, widow, mother of Thomas, of a messuage or residence at Streetside in Ossett and all ?outhouses, barns, structures, stables, folds, orchards, gardens, crofts, yards and easements appurtenant, now occupied by Mary or her assigns at an annual lords? rent of 5d: to the use of Joseph Richardson of Dunsfold, Surrey, clerk, his heirs and assigns for ever, on condition that if Thomas Whiteakers, his executors, administrators or assigns or any of them paid or caused to be paid to the said Joseph Richardson, his heirs, executors or administrator the sum of £26 15s on 29 September following without fraud or delay at the residence of William Turner at Wakefield, the surrender would become void.

What Thomas is apparently doing is giving away the family home and lands unless he can find a large sum of money by 29 September. That land is also going to someone in Surrey! The answer to what this is about may lay in the name of the person taking over the land title ? Joseph RICHARDSON. Thomas? mother was Mary RICHARDSON so the land may have been kept in the family after all.

The farm he inherited was held from the Earl of Halifax

The YAS publication of the 1709 Wakefield Manor Book records that he was a resident of Hanging Heaton and paid 3 shillings. He was a freeholder and copyholder in the graveship of Ossett (page 99).

He also paid (page 103) 5 pence rent for two houses and Lands in Ossett

He is known from Deed in Vol A page 596 at Wakefield Registry of Deeds
