The site of Dudley Castle lay abandoned after it was destroyed by Henry II when Gervase de Paynel supported the uprising of Prince Henry. In the mid-thirteenth century Roger Somery began to rebuild. He died in 1272 before the works were anything like complete, and they were carried on by his son, John, said to have been one of the most hated feudal lords in the west Midlands. The Strange family was one of those charged with containing the border area with the wild Celts of Wales, who would revolt against the Normans periodically. Hunstanton is in Norfolk, and Strange (Le Strange) lines were there from the generation or two before the Norman conquest in 1066.
