PRINCETON ? Evangelist Oden E. Lockhart (Old Time Preacher Man), 91, of Quail Valley, Princeton, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Russell County, Va., and was a son of the late Floyd Lockhart and Maxie McGlothlin Lockhart.
He was an evangelist, serving several churches in the area and was a member of Calvary Baptist Chapel in Tazewell, Va., was instrumental in organization of Liberty Baptist Church in Princeton and was active in Zion Hill Baptist Church in Bluefield, Va. He was also a retired miner, having worked for U.S. Steel. He served in the Philippines, doing Demolition work with the US Army during World War II and served in CC camps in Manassas, Va. for 5 years. He was also an active radio evangelist.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Mae Neely Lockhart and by two brothers and three sisters.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Quick Lockhart; daughters, Loretta Bryant and husband Curley of Tazewell, Va., Maxie Williams and husband Freeman of Abbs Valley, Va.; three stepdaughters, Patrice Quick of Bluefield, W.Va., Mary C. Stokes and husband Richard of Barnsville, Ga., Katie Beth Tibbs and husband Allen of Princeton, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, 10 step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Liberty Baptist Church in Princeton with Chuck Trent, Greg Kinzer, Ric Via and Jeff Stacy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Eddie Bryant, Doug Bryant, David Bryant, Barry Bryant, Allen Tibbs and Carlton McClure. Junior pallbearers will be Mark Sawyers, William Tibbs and Cory Bryant. Area ministers will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The Lockhart family received friends Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va.
