Ida Lou Sterrett Barnds, 87, of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas a former Slater resident, died Monday, December, 2, 1991, at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 6, in Slater City Cemetery. The Rev. William Joseph Barnds will officiate. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the department of classical studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia or the Guild of All Souls in South Orange, New Jersey.
Born June 5, 1904, in Slater, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Burks and Elizabeth Caldwell Sterrett. She was married to the Rt. Rev. William Paul Barnds, who preceded her in death on January 24, 1973. She was a graduate of Missouri Valley College and received a master's degree in classical languages from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She taught at Stafford High School in Stafford, Kansas; Hardin College in Mexico, Missouri; and was adjunct professor of Latin at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth before her retirement. She lived in Fort Worth since 1956 and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth. She was a member of the American Association of University Women.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. William Joseph Barnds of Gering, Nebraska; two daughters, Mrs. James (Mary Ida) Garrad of Sherman, Grayson County, Texas and Mrs. Nicholas (Virginia Lou) Albanese of Amesbury, Mass.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, William W. Sterrett of Slater.

OBITUARY

William Wilson Sterrett, 90, of Independence, Missouri, a former Slater resident, died Sunday June 20. 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Born June 15, 1909, in Slater, he was the son of the late Joseph Burks and Elizabeth Allen Caldwell Sterrett. On December 19, 1936, in Washington, D.C., he married Rachel W. Finch and she survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Burks Sterrett of Myrtle Point, Oregon and James Roger Sterrett of Balzac, Alberta, Canada; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.
Mr. Sterrett was a 1926 graduate of Slater High School and a 1930 graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. He attended the University of Missouri - Columbia for two years and graduated from George Washington Law School in Washington, D.C., in 1935. He served as Deputy Circuit Clerk of Saline County form 1932 - 34. He passed the Bar in December 1934 and practiced law in Saline County for 53 years at Sterrett Law Office in Slater. He was secretary to Congressman William Nelson in Washington, D.C., from 1938 - 1940. He was with the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C., for two years, the War Production Board for a year and served in the Air Transport Command for two. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Mr. Sterrett returned to Slater in 1946 where he served as City Attorney from 1946 - 1981. He served as Chairman of the Slater County Red Cross and on the Slater Public School Board from 1948 - 1952. He was a member, deacon, trustee, elder and former Sunday School Teacher at the Slater Presbyterian Church. He was President of the Saline County Bar Association form 1983 -1991 and Vice-President from 1991 - 1993. He served on the board of directors of the State Bank of Slater for 53 years. He was a longtime member and past President of the Slater Rotary Club from which he received the Slater Club's first Paul Harris Fellow in 1995. He was a Boy Scout Counselor beginning in 1950 and received the Missouri Valley College Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1996. He was also a longtime member of American Legion Post #78 of Slater.
