    OBITUARY

    Robert Tate Alexander of Fairfield died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at his home. Son of the late John Addison Alexander and Janet Ingles (Fultz) Alexander, he was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Norfolk.

    Graduating from Fairfield High School, he attended Washington and Lee University. He graduated Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1939 with a degree in chemical engineering.

    He was a lifelong resident of Fairfield and a retired businessman and farmer.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth F. (Libby) Alexander; two brothers, James G. Alexander Sr. and John A. Alexander; a son, Robert Tate Alexander Jr.; and a grandson, Iain M. Alexander.

    He is survived by three sons, Dr. Bruce Alexander and wife, Margaret, of Birmingham, Ala., Sam Alexander and wife, Kenmar, of Staunton and John Alexander and wife, Susan, of Independence; 11 grandchildren, Brenden, Laura Draper, Lindsay, Chris, Aaron, Micah, Tate, Kyle, Kara, Jason and Ben; one great-grandson, Sam; and dear friend, Judy Hoyt.

    He was very active in community affairs, including lifetime membership in Fairfield Presbyterian Church. He was a dedicated Rotarian who served as district governor and received the Paul Harris Award. Locally, he was known as "Mr. Rotary" and a true "Southern gentleman." His public service included time as the Rockbridge County Commissioner of Revenue. He was a direct descendent of the first high sheriff of Rockbridge County.

    He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, attaining the rank of lieutenant.

    A private graveside service will be followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Timber Ridge Old Stone Presbyterian Church. A luncheon reception hosted by the family will follow at the Fairfield United Methodist Community Center.

    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Rockbridge County Public Schools Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 1042, Lexington, VA 24450.

    Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory in Lexington.

    ALEXANDER, Robert T., Jr., 55, of 17 Tewksbury Road, Hampstead, N. H., died Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at the Parkland Medical Center, Derry, N.H. following a lengthy illness.

    Bob, as he was known, was born in Lexington, Va. on December 24, 1943, the son of Robert T. and Elizabeth (Firebaugh) Alexander.

    He had been a resident of Hampstead, N. H. for the past 22 years, formerly living in Virginia. He was a 1967 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va. Bob utilized this artistic talents in many ways, most recently by creating an alcohol and drug awareness program for elementary students.

    He is survived by his wife, Marty (Maxson) Alexander, Hampstead, N. H.; two sons, Jason S. Alexander, Hampstead, N.H. and Benjamin T. Alexander, Hampstead, N.H.; his parents of Fairfield, Va.; three brothers, C. Bruce Alexander, M.D., Birmingham, Ala., J. Sam Alexander, Staunton, Va., John I. Alexander, Wytheville, Va.; five nieces, seven nephews and many cousins.

    Following cremation, memorial services will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, Va. A reception will be held in the church following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rockbridge County High School Art Department, Lexington, Va., in Bob's memory.
