He was born Jan. 20, 1916, at Cherry Grove Farm in Fairfield and was a son of the late John Addison and Janet Ingles Fultz Alexander.

A lifetime farmer, he formed and developed the Cherry Grove Dairy Farm, which he, with the help of his two sons, continued to operate until his death. He was a member of Fairfield Ruritan Club, serving as president and in other offices, and was a member of the Masons, Mountain City Lodge No. 0067 in Lexington, Va., for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jeffress Alexander. Mr. Alexander is survived by his son, James G. Alexander Jr., and a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Jeffress and Jean Ann Alexander, all of Fairfield, Va.; two brothers, R. Tate Alexander of Fairfield and John A. Alexander Jr. of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Susie Jeffress McCormick of Raphine, Va.; four nephews; and three nieces.
