Roland Reid Manning of Longmont died October 17, 2008 at his home. He was 71. Roland was born on February 6, 1937 in Ogden, Utah to Roland Garner Manning and Elizabeth Reid Manning. Raised in Utah he moved to Colorado in 1951.
He attended the University of Colorado, studying Chemical Engineering. Roland married Carol Norman on February 23, 1958 in Denver.
Roland will be remembered for his loving and caring way and as a man of action. Whether he was climbing the mountain or skiing down it, exploring a mountain, desert or Lake Powell in his houseboat. Perhaps motorcycling a one thousand mile weekend with his buddies and occasionally just relaxing in his motor home one would agree, he loved life and lived it fully. His sense of humor was known to all, always loving to hear or share a good joke.
He began his adult work life at the High Altitude Observatory in Climax, Colorado. After his son was born he returned to the University of Colorado and worked part-time for Gump Glass. While with Gump he was proud to have been involved with placing glass in the Air Force Academy Chapel. Later he worked for Dow Chemical Rocky Flats Plant for several years until he began his long career with Ball Aerospace. He was responsible for planning and setting up clean rooms for Ball and was affectionately known by those in the aerospace industry as "Mr. Clean", especially when he was at the Space centers. His skills and career abilities took him to Storage Tech for several years to set up their clean rooms. Eventually his first love took him back to Ball and the aerospace industry.
Preceding him in death are his parents and one sister Joyce Pihl. Surviving are his wife Carol, one son Randall Jay Manning of Longmont, a daughter Leta Cheryl Gill and Dr. John Scott of Lafayette, and two grandsons Christopher William Gill and Alexander Joseph Gill of Lafayette; two sisters Marcene Daines of Richland, Washington, and Vickie Erickson of Carson City, Nevada and one brother Kent Manning of Queensland, Australia; six nephews and two nieces.
A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Crematory. Private family services will be held at a later date.
