2. | Sophronia Elizabeth TATE (1.Delilah1) Notes:
The Family of Thompson and Sophronia Dunnegan, compiled by Carol E. Vaughan, Lexington, KY
Thompson lived with his father, Absalom, and remaining family members in White or Warren Counties, TN until around 1835 when he started his own family. His mother apparently died before 1830. Thompson married Sophronia Elizabeth Tate, daughter of Alexander Tate and Delilah Henderson. She was born around 1810 in VA or TN. It was said that Sophronia was "born with a veil" which, according to Appalachian folklore, could mean that she may have had an extra sensory "gift" or "powers." Certainly, she was held in high esteem since two of her granddaughters were named for her. Thompson and Sophronia had seven children, six of which were born in TN.
Thompson and Sophronia made their home in Warren County, TN in the Civil District 2 community of Campaign. He appears on the Tax Lists of 1836 and 1838 which show him as having 100 acres of land. The only record of land transactions found in TN was a Trust Deed dated April 25, 1838 in which a George Cole pays off a debt Thompson owed to Miller and Pennen for interest and possible sale of property. They lived in Warren County at the time of the 1850 Census but moved to Missouri shortly after that count. Their seventh child, Leander was born in MO in 1854. In the 1860 Census they are shown living in Iron County, MO with all seven children. By 1870, the family had settled in the town of Greenville in Wayne County, MO. Jane, Mary L., and Irvin were still living with them. James Elgin and William Samuel were married and living in Iron County. Sarah C. had married George B. Wallace by that time. The 1870 Census shows a Samuel Spears, farm laborer from TN, living with Thompson and Sophronia. We believe that Samuel was the son of Nancy Dunnegan and James Spears. At this time, Nancy is thought to have been Thompson's sister.
The dates and places of death for Thompson and Sophronia are unknown. The last record of Sophronia is shown on a deed dated March 22, 1879 in which she and Thompson sold a parcel of land in Wayne County to Emmanuel Lovelace. In another deed dated June 22, 1880, Thompson and his second wife, Sarah (Sallie) E. Foquaide sell a parcel of land to Irvin George Dunnegan. No evidence has been found to pinpoint the date of his death...only that he was still living in 1880. Nor, have any cemetery records been found showing their burial in Wayne or Iron Counties. There is a possibility that both were buried in a part of Old Greenville, located on the St. Francis River, which has been under water since the creation of Wappapello Dam.
A record of Thompson's marriage to Sarah E. Foquaide was found in Iron County. They were married April 14, 1880. The 1880 Census shows Thompson as head of household, 70 years old, farmer from VA, with his wife Sarah, 48 years old from TN. Also are listed two children, John (17) son, and Frances (11) daughter. The surname Dunnegan is shown for these children, but I do not believe that Thompson adopted them since their real names show up on later records. It is possible that Thompson died in St. Louis. Sally is shown living there in the 1890 Census but, most likely, she moved there after Thompson died.
Sophronia married Thompson Dunnegan 1835, Warren Co. TN. Thompson was born 1809, Wythe Co. VA. [Group Sheet]

Douglas and Sarah (Price) Tate, the former of whom was born in Warren County Tenn., and the latter in Jackson County ALA., who came with their family to Sherrill Township., Texas County, Missouri in 1852 and settled on a farm in Texas County where they spent the remainder of their lives. Douglas Tate and wife were the parents of 11 children of whom Louisa Tally was the fourth in order of birth.
The names and ages of children born in Warren County, TN were confirmed by the Warren County, TN 1850 Census. On that Census it indicates that he was a farmer whose land was worth approximately $300.
He married his second wife, Rachael C., a widow with three daughters. E., b. 1855; Harriett McLaughlin, b. 1860 AR and Adaline McLaughlin, b. 1862, AR. These children were listed in the Sherill, Texas County Census of 1870, pg 479-34 and 1880, pg 368-272.

Notes from Carol E. Vaughan, great granddaughter, Lexington, KY
Irwin George, the sixth child of Thompson Dunnegan and Sophronia Tate, was born in Warren County, TN in 1849. Thompson's family had moved from VA to middle TN sometime between 1810 and 1817. After Irvin's grandfather, Absalom Dunnegan, died in White County, TN, his uncles, John and Samuel Dunnegan left that area and moved to southeast MO around 1843. After about ten years Irvin's father Thompson followed them to Iron County, MO and later to Wayne County, MO.
Irwin was a farmer and owned a sawmill in Des Arc which he sold to G. W. Graves in 1890 for one thousand dollars. He was involved in a number of land transfers in Wayne County. One of the deeds reflected an understanding between Irvin George and his father, Thompson, in which Irvin would have a parcel of land for a nominal cost and would provide elder care for Thompson. It was signed in 1880 by Thompson and his second wife, Sallie E. Foquaide.
Irvin died in 1895 of injuries resulting from a very serious accident in 1894 at a saw mill in Wayne County. Carol Vaughan remembers this version as told by her grandfather, Walter C. Dunnegan. "Granddaddy said that people would come to their house and cut off patches of their own skin to graft onto his father's are flesh in hopes that his wounds would heal. He was at home in bed a long time before he died." The following death notice in the Iron County Register paints an even more agonizing and painful death.
Iron County Register, June 20, 1895
From Des Arc
I. G. Dunnegan, who was scalded in a wreck on a log boom below Poplar Bluff last summer, was brought home last winter. All the flesh was burned off his legs from his hip down. He has suffered death a thousand times, and of late he suffered so much you could hear him hollow and take on for some distance. So the Doctors concluded to cut off one of his lets, and Sunday, Drs. Petit, Gay, Tates and Sebastian amputated his leg, but he only lived until night. Poor man! He is better off. May God help his bereaved widow and children! He will be buried at Des Arc Tuesday. June 17, 1895

James A. Tate was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg, MS on July 3, 1863. He enlisted at Licking, MO on January 1862, Confederate 1st and 4th Consolidated Regiment. He was on the Company Muster Roll, November and December 1862. He was last paid on October 30, 1862 and for each two months until it shows him killed.
Notes from Aline Brown Tate
Very little is known about James Tate and Sarah A. Flowers Tate----especially James Tate. They were living in (Texas) near Licking, Missouri when the boys were born. According to the son, James C. Tate, his father was serving in the Army during the Civil War in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. His mother received word he was sick. She took the two small boys and a slave to drive the oxcart; two barrels of salt to use as money and went to Louisiana to see her husband. When they got there she was told he had died of small pox and already buried. That was when small pox was raging there. She came back to Missouri, and later married again.

Born circa 1843, Jackson County, AL. Son of Jahiel Douglas and Sarah Price Tate. His father courted and wed a girl, Sarah Price of Jackson County, AL and apparently lived there for some time as his two sons were born there, then they returned to Warren County, TN where they grew up. They were living there in 1850, but shortly thereafter, John Douglas Tate and several others moved to Missouri. He married Mary E. Westfall, born 1844 in Missouri, a daughter of Naomi Westfall, born 1808 in Virginia who was living with the family in the 1880 Barry County, MO Census

21. | Julia A. TATE (3.Jahiel2, 1.Delilah1) was born 13 May 1857, Sherrill, Texas Co. MO; died 31 Jan 1926, Chicago, Cook Co. IL. Notes:
The state of Missouri was torn by differing politics during the Civil War. Julia A. Tate married John M. Boyles who fought for the Confederacy. Her older sister, Louisa A. Tate married William T. Tally who fought for the Union and was eventually imprisoned by the Confederacy at Andersonville, GA.
On Julia Death Certificate from the Department of Health - Division of Vital Statistics, State of Illinois, there appear to be some errors. It states that her father was John Tate and that she was born in Boonville, MO. This seems to be incorrect. Other documentation indicates that her father was Jahiel Douglas Tate and that she was born in Sherrill, Texas County, MO. The informant on the Death Certificate was her son, Stanley Boyles.

"I was born October 28, 1862, down in southwestern Missouri near the town of Licking. The town got its name from a famous 'salt lick,' you know, a natural salt spring, where the wild animals came to drink the water and lick up the salt crust along the edge of the swampy pool. The 'lick' was about an acre in extent, and the animals had licked it down about ten or twelve feet. That's how much they liked salt."
"Wild ducks were so plentiful, when I was a boy, that I often went hunting with a club and seldom returned home without two or three. We had a neighbor who used a gun and he went to town, his wagon loaded with ducks," remarked James Calvin Tate, on the eve of his eighty-first birthday.
"Hunters built platforms in trees around the 'lick' and sat there nights to shoot deer and other animals. The streams were full of fish and wild ducks and geese were to be found in every pool of water--they were so plentiful that, as I said before, a boy who wasn't old enough to trust with a gun--and that wasn't very old down in Missouri in those days--could and did kill 'em with a club or a rock thrown into a flock.
"That was soon after the close of the Civil war and I remember the soldiers going home. They often stopped at my house for a meal, and to pass the night. We had an old colored man and his wife on our place and when my parents weren't around, the colored folk, if they got a chance, locked us in a closet under the stairs to keep us, my brother and I, 'from under foot.'"
Acorns for Dinner
"My grandfather lived with us and in the evenings he would sometimes tell us about the time he fought with 'Old Hickory" at New Orleans and how he and other soldiers rolled cotton bales in front of them when they advanced and took the city from the Britishers."
Mr. Tate thought a moment and remarked: "Here's a story about General Andy Jackson that never has been printed to my knowledge. My grandfather and two other soldiers were foraging--they had no food at camp--and were tramping through the country looking for something to eat. They met the General, he was on horseback, and he stopped them for questioning. They told him, what he already knew, about the lack of supplies.
"' Well, boys," said the General, 'I had luck. Just now I found a burr oak and had dinner. Thought I might as well stock up a bit, so I'll help you out.' He did, gave each of the soldiers one of the three burr oak acorns that he had put in his pocket." Mr. Tate smiled, "Ever try an acorn for dinner? Neither did I."
Helped Build World's Fair
"When did you join the Carpenters Union?" Mr. Tate, we asked.
"In 1886, at Nashville, Tenn. Was a charter member, too. Worked in and around Nashville for a time and then went to Chicago to help build the First World's Fair. After I had that pretty well under way," Mr. Tate grinned, "a contractor I knew had a church to build in Galesburg. Came here on Oct. 22, 1892, and have liver here ever since. I like Galesburg."
"How about carpenter work? Has it changed much in the last fifty years?" we asked.
"Changed. Well I should say it has. Why, in those days we made everything on and in the building by hand. Look at the molding about your room, we had tools for every operation--guess I had a dozen or more rabbiting cutters alone. We had to do our own tennoning and mortising, even wood carving on occasions. Yes, times have changed."
"Ever belong to the Knights of Labor?"
"Yep. In 1877. Pretty nearly every union man did at one time or another in the early days. Of course, the Carpenters Union came first but we all gave the Knights a lift when we could. No, I never held office in their organization. Just tagged along with the rest."
"You have held office in the Carpenters, haven't you?"
Held Many Union Offices
"Held office? Better say offices, because I've held every office in the Galesburg local.
"Was president of the Galesburg Trades and Labor Assembly. Say, if there is any labor office in Galesburg that I did not fill at one time or another I just can't think what it might be."
"Heard from Jim recently?" Jim, Mr. Tate's son, is in the army.
"Yes, only a day or so ago. We expect to see him before Christmas. He's been in the army a year, now.
"And Myrtle?" a daughter.
"She's in Chicago and writes that she's busy in an essential war industry as a personnel director. She completed her college training some time ago and writes her mother that she likes the work. Expect her for Thanksgiving."
Feeling "Fine" at 81
Getting up from his chair, he pays The Labor News a visit now and then, he grunted a bit. "Rheumatism," he said. 'Got a twitch of it in my back today."
"Bother you much?"
"Not so much. When you are 81 you can't feel too good all the time.
"Rheumatism comes and goes, like everything else. When you are 81 and you feel fine part of the time, well, that's just dandy.
"Good bye. Will see you again. Good health and good luck."
A fine, genial and inspiring old gentleman--and a model trades unionist--just closed our office door and walked with remarkable vigor and cheeriness up Cherry toward Main Street. Our honored friend, James Calvin Tate.

James C. Tate was a baby when his father died according to him. He came with his mother, Sarah, and stepfather, William Tazewell Gentry from Missouri to (Dickson) Tennessee around 1876. He was in (Dickson) in 1880 [U.S. Census]. He went to Nashville, Tennessee and joined the Carpenter's Union there as a Charter Member in 1886. He went to Illinois in 1892 and remained there until his death.

OBITUARY
Reference: obituary from Galesburg Labor News, May 11, 1945, copy in Aline Brown Tate notes
James C. Tate, Veteran Carpenter, Dies of Heart Attack
James C. Tate, a charter member of Carpenters and Joiners Local Union No. 360, died last Thursday evening at 10:55 following a heart attack. Mr. Tate had been in his usual health throughout the day and his death came as a great shock to his family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Tate lived alone at 668 West north Street, the other members now living in other cities. Their daughter, Miss Myrtle Tate, who is employed in Chicago, came in Thursday evening to spend a few days with her parents and her father's death followed just a few hours after her arrival.
James Calvin Tate was born October 28, 1862, at Licking, Mo., and when young his family moved to Nashville, Tenn., where he spent his youth. He was a charter member of the Nashville Carpenters Union, which he joined in 1886. He has been a member of the International Union since that date. He went to Chicago in 1892 where he helped build the Chicago World Fair buildings. A contractor whom he knew had a contract to build a church in Galesburg and he came here in October, 1892, and has resided here since that time.
Jim Tate was active in union affairs throughout his life and held many offices of trust in the labor movement. He had served his union in all offices, including president, and was active on various committees. He had also served as president of the Galesburg Trades and Labor Assembly and had been a delegate to many State Federation of Labor conventions. Soon after coming to Galesburg he was greatly instrumental in organizing the Galesburg Labor News and had always taken keen interest in this publication. He was also active in soliciting funds for the purchase of the Labor Temple. In recent years his health would not permit the continuation of his activities but he never lost interest in the welfare of the working man. Labor has lost a truly great trade unionist in the death of Jim Tate.
Soon after coming to Galesburg, Mr. Tate was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Worden. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary May 18, 1943. His wife and four children survive. They are Mrs. C. J. Mulvaney, Long Beach, Calif.; Miss Myrtle Tate, Chicago; Morris Tate, Springfield, and James M. Tate, Peoria. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Lee Brown, and a brother, Silas Gentry, of Nashville, Tenn. There are six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Kimber and West Mortuary Monday, May 7, with Rev. Raye L. Ragan in charge. Burial was in Memorial Park. The pallbearers were C.O. Nelson, Swen Wedan, Harry M. Starr and P. J. Davis.

History of Herman Dochow Family by Miss Lillian Shimmick
From the sod house the family established itself in a new two-story frame house which was built just west of their soddy. The house still stands and is presently owned by the daughter, Mrs. Pearl Dochow Boyles and her husband, Owen. The bricks for the chimney wee hauled from Norcatur and the lumber from Jennings. A second trip had to be made to Norcatur after the youngest child, Joe was found breaking the new bricks with his hammer. John and Pete Pauls and Harry Munson assisted Herman in building his house. Nick Hahn bore a well near the house in 1891.
In June 1909, Pearl went to Kansas City, MO where she worked for the Loose and Wyld Candy Company and the Walkers Laundry. Later, she kept house for Miller Hageman, her grandmother's uncle who ran an apartment housers' laundry. In 1910, Pearl met Owen Boyles, a furniture finisher who worked for Robert Keith Carpet and Furniture Company. They were married at Olathe, KS on March 6, 1912. They bought a home in Kansas City, MO and lived there until 1916 when they moved to Jennings.
When Joe [Dochow] as arrayed into the United States Army in 1916, Pearl and Owen Boyles returned to Jennings to be with Mrs. Dochow and to keep the Dochow farm in operation. On July 20, 1926, a son, Joe was born to Pearl and Owen. Joe attended elementary and high school at Jennings and in Oberlin. He served his country in World War II. He is married to Katherine Kirk and is now living in Kansas City, MO. They have a 16-year-old daughter, Vicki.
Mrs. Addie Dochow's retirement years were spent on the farm with Pearl and Owen. Pearl and Owen still reside on the farm enjoying the freedom of the out-of-doors. They have rented the farm ground and have things pretty much as they want them out there. They still have chickens and a ga4rden and depend on their car to get them to the places where they need to go. On March 14, 1974, Pearl's 91st birthday, Mrs. Leroy (Florence Nauer) Wyld hosted a birthday party honoring Pearl and Mrs. Ruby Stroup, whose birthdays are on the same day. Mahy friends and relatives called to extend congratulations, Pearl and Owen enjoy each day to the fullest keeping informed by reading and watching TV and listening to radio programs. They vote at elections, and enjoy visiting and entertaining. The Welcome Mat is always at the door.

The following is a censored letter sent to Owen Boyles, General Delivery, Jennings, KS while Alonzo was stationed in France during World War I. A copy of this letter sent to Ricki Wilkins in 2000 by Joe Boyles.
Dear Bro Owen & Pearl,
I will write for the first time since crossing the ocean. This letter must be briefly written as they are censored according to Military orders.
I am somewhere in France. I have been somewhere in England. Things are funny there.
How is your farm? Well, I haven't saw any active service yet. I have a French chicken over here. ha! ha!
Well, I will close Owen.
With love, Best wishes, your bro.
Alonzo Boyles, 63 Artillery Bat. E., C A C,
American P. O. A. E. F. #753
P. S. Owen, I am learning the French language fast. They have oxen and wooden shoes over here and hitch cows to carts. ha! ha! The money is different than ours.
Alonzo married Rose. [Group Sheet]
