  1. 1.  Mary Adkins was born 12 Oct 1735, Richland, Goochland Co. VA; died Aft 1820, Beech Fork, Cabell Co. VA (now WV).

    Notes:

    According to family stories and oral history is that Mary lived common law with a descendant of the Earl of Oxford. According to the tradition, he deserted Mary and her children during the Revolutionary War and returned to England. Because the family name of the person that held the title 'Earl of Oxford' during the mid 1700s was Harley it was assumed by many researchers that this man's name was Jacob Harley.

    If this is the case, her descendants through Lineberry have both Native American and European "royal" blood.

    Her ancestry in English, with her grandparents being William V. Atkinson and Elizabeth Parker of Charles City, Henrico Co. VA. Her mother shortened the name to Adkins and was the common-law wife of Jacob Harley.

    Nancy married Littleberry Adkins 29 May 1790, Franklin Co. VA. Littleberry (son of Parker Vincent Adkins and Mary) was born 10 May 1767, Pittsylvania Co. VA; died Bef 1849, Lick Springs, Sumner Co. VA (WV); was buried , Grave Hill Cemetery, Lick Creek, West Virginia. [Group Sheet]

    1860 Census for Wayne Co. VA he was still innkeeper with personal property valued at $2100.00 and real property of $3648.00. Evidently, he was a successful businessman, making
    him one the more wealthy citizens of the county.
