Bushman, John Walker p. 12 Humphrey was a major in the state militia and sheriff of King and Queen Co. He was regularly elected to the General Assembly for 9 sessions, and was a planter and gentleman who moved easily in society. His lineage was from Tidewater society that had intermarried for generations. He owned a carriage and entertained frequently. It was not unusual for there to be 18 people for dinner with seven dishes of meat, four vegetables, pickles, a fine pudding, pie, tarts, cheese, wine and cider. p. 15-16 Frances Temple was his first cousin. Humphrey also inherited Locust Grove, building the present house, after the second house burned down around 1816. The new house had fewer, but larger rooms, allowing the river breezes on both sides of the structure. An alley of locust trees framed the entrance. In 1820 he owned 745 acres, only 19 more landowners in King and Queen had more than he did, and only ten claimed more a thousand acres. On a tax list of 1800 Humphrey owned 6 horses, 4 wheeled vehicles, 18 adult and 6 teen-aged slaves.
