Muriel Ray Short, age 98, died on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 011 at the Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain, Tenn., where she had been a patient for almost two years. She was a former resident of 300 Park View Dr., Bluefield, Va. Prior to moving to Roan Mountain, she lived at The Havens in Princeton for nine years. She was born on June 7, 1913, the only daughter of the late Roy and Willie Wingo Ray of Baptist Valley, Va. Mrs. Short was a member of Graham Christian Church, Bluefield, Va.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl S. Beavers of Springville, Va.; and her second husband, Robert L. Short of Bluefield, Va. in 1990; her four brothers, Early W. Ray, Worley Ray, Harley L. Ray of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Samuel D. Ray of Casselberry, Fla.; grandson, Brian R. Mattox of Andes, N.Y.
Mrs. Short is survived by her daughter, Betty Beavers Mattox and husband John of Bluefield, Va.; granddaughter, Deborah Mattox Rest of Bristol, Va.; grandson, Timothy A. Mattox and wife Yasmin of Miami, Fla.; great-grandsons, Andrew N. Rest of Bristol, Va., and Stephen C. Rest of Kingsport, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Anita Ray of Casselberry, Fla.; nephews, Joe Roy Ray and wife Sharon of Abingdon, Va.; Stephen Ray and wife Donna of Lebanon, Va.; niece, Virginia Ray Sanders and husband James of Cleveland, Va.; and several great-nephews and nieces.
Friends may call at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. The service celebrating her life in Christ will begin at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Gary Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in the mausoleum at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va.
