In 1908 there was a mine explosion at the Portland Colliery Company, Ltd., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in which 4 men from Hurlford were killed and two were injured. Mining conditions and economic opportunity may have been the reason for John and his brother to emigrate from Scotland to America.
