OBITUARY
Robert Edward "Bob" Owens, 81, of Corbin, KY, went home to be with the Lord on January 27, 2011. He was surrounded by family members at the time of his departure. He was born September 3, 1929, at Verda, KY, in Harlan County.
He attended Evarts High School where he played football and was inducted into their sports Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a member of the Hugh Harris Masonic Lodge and received his 50-year membership pen in 2001. He was a member of the Oleika Shrine Temple in Lexington, KY, and had the distinction of being named a Kentucky Colonel by the Honorable Wallace Wilkinson, former governor of Kentucky. Robert was an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan and followed both the football and basketball games for years. He was a former employee of Mack's Supermarkets, Inc., of Harlan County, where he worked for 41 years as a manager first, and then as a supervisor for the corporation. Robert loved a good joke and would tell them to anyone who would listen.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he served as secretary/treasurer from 2001 ? 2005 for the Lowell Cornelius Sunday School class. He was also active in the Golden Fifties group and served first as assistant director for three years, and then as director for three years. He was also a member of the Golden Fifties Drama Club and had been in several of their productions.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Henry R. Owens and Clara Baker Owens, and his brother, James C. Owens. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Robbins Owens of Corbin, KY; two daughters: Darlene (Dean) Cole of Kendall, NY, and Robin (Michael) Osborne, of Corbin, KY: three grandsons: David D'Amico, Rochester, NY, Devin Osborne, London, KY, and Matthew Osborne, Corbin, KY; one granddaughter: Cindy Schott, Brockport, NY; three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; two sisters: Henrietta Allen of Clayton, NC, and Ginger Smith of Tavares, FL, plus several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2011, at Central Baptist Church in Corbin, KY, with Rev. Ron Green officiating. Visitation will also be at the church from noon until 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will follow in Resthaven Cemetery in Corbin, KY. Pallbearers will be family members and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lowell Cornelius Sunday School class and the Band of Brothers Prayer Circle.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Central Baptist Church or to Hospice of the Bluegrass Mountain Heritage 1020 Cumberland Falls Highway Corbin, KY 40701.
