Dr. Raymond Yow, 85, of Sarasota, died Nov. 30, 2009.
Services for Dr. Raymond M. Yow, a retired Salisbury, Md., physician and insurance company executive, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Palms. Dr. Yow, was 85 years old.
He was the first urological surgeon to establish a practice in Salisbury, opening his office in 1955. Dr. Yow was certified by the American Board of Urology and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He held membership in numerous professional organizations, holding office in several.
He was active in several community organizations, serving on the board of trustees of the Peninsula General Hospital, president of the medical staff of that institution, as well as chief of surgery. At one time he was a licensed lay reader at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Salisbury, where he served as a vestryman and senior warden.
In 1975 Dr. Yow was appointed to the founding board of Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland by then Gov. Marvin Mandel. He served as senior vice president from 1975 until 1983, when he became chairman of the board and chief executive officer, retiring in 1996.
Born in Raleigh, N.C., he was the son of the late Vernon S. Yow and Nell P. Yow. He attended public schools in Richmond, Va., and West Point, Va. He attended the Virginia Military Institute for two years, leaving to volunteer for the Army during World War II. Subsequently, he attended the University of Chicago. In 1948 he received his doctor of medicine degree at the University of Illinois School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer from 1949 to 1951. Dr. Yow received his urology training at the Richmond Veterans Hospital and opened his office in Salisbury in 1955. Retiring from medical practice in 1987, he assumed a fulltime position as chairman and CEO of Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland in Hunt Valley, retiring in 1996.
Dr. Yow is survived by his wife, Cathie, and children by a previous marriage: Mrs. Peggy Scott of Waldorf, Md., and her husband, Greg; and daughters Mrs. Miki Fett of Kansas and Mary Scott of New York; a son, Mr. Norman S. Yow, and his wife, Leila, of Fairfax, Va., and two children, Jenna and Ryan; a daughter, Dr. Patricia Ann Yow, died in 1997; and a niece, Mrs. Leslie Mill-Santos of Randolph, N.J.
