    • Robert and Lydia lived in McDowell Co. VA which was formed from Tazewell Co. VA in 1858 and then became part of West Virginia in 1863 when the western counties of VA seceeded to ally with the Union. For the census it is correct to have the place of birth as Virginia before 1863, but afterwards it is was West Virginia, but the census taker still put Virginia for those children who were actually born in West Virginia. So I used McDowell Co. VA/WV to note this.
