OBITUARY

Reid Putney
An organic farmer and founder of Countryside Natural Products Inc. in Fishersville, Reid Taylor Putney, 80, of Waynesboro and formerly of Rockbridge County died Tuesday, April 1, 2008.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in forestry. He then founded Dover Forestry Co. and worked as a consultant for 15 years. He had been an organic farmer in Bedford and Rockbridge counties for 30 years. He founded Countryside Natural Products in 1997 and was active in the Virginia Biological Farmers Association and the Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association.
He was also active in the Virginia Conservative Party and was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1964. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton and was a Gideon.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Laine Putney; three sons, Reid Taylor Putney of Dayton Ohio, Stephen Barrett Putney of Lynchburg and Douglas Laine Putney of Dayton, Va.; three sisters; one brother; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted Friday, April 4, at Calvary Baptist Church in Staunton by the Rev. Randy Spencer and the Rev. Stephen B. Putney. Burial was in Augusta Memorial Park in Fishersville.
