NC, household 369, she is listed as Mary age 3 with father Harvey Nelson, age 30, farmer, personal property woth $185 born in VA, mother, Sarah, age 27, and siblings Jane age 7, James age 5, and Susan age 1. 1870 Census, McDowell Co, WV, Big Creek District, page 8, Family #53. Listed as Mary E. Nelson, age 13, born in NC, in household of step-father, James Marion Dancy. Not listed in the Dancy household in 1880 census. Had she married, left home, or died? There was a Mary Nelson, age 20, in household 106 living within the same district as her mother. She is working as a cook/servant in the household of William and Sarah Whitt and is listed as a cousin. Most likely Sarah's since she was born in NC, and the 1860 Ashe Co. NC census listed Mary as being born there. Althought Mary has Virginia as a birth place for both her and her father, we don't know who gave the information to the census taker. Like her sisters Emily Jane and Amanda, Mary is unable to read or write. Also like her sister Amanda who is working as a cook in Tazewell Co. VA, she has an infant child. This most likely is Mary Nelson, daughter of Harvey Nelson and Sarah Garrett Nelson, now married to James M. Dancy.
