Advices stated that rescuers were unable to reach the victims until the home had burned completely down and nothing was left of the bodies but the charred bones. Sneed was said to have built up a fire shortly before daylight and went back to bed, dropping off to sleep. When he awoke the house had so nearly burned down that he had time only to snatch up one of the little children, a boy, and flee with him. It was thought that the building caught from a defective flue. Sneed and his family removed to Modoc from Camp Creek. [Everett and Cynthia moved to Raleigh Co., WV where several of his siblings were living.]
