  Notes	He was a mine foreman. He descended from Johannes Ulrich Surface (1735-1805), a Palatinate German from the Koblenze area who migrated to the American colonies first settling in PA and later in Augusta Co. VA. Johannes' son, George (1767-1845), was in Rockingham and Montgomery counties VA and ended up in Indiana before his death. Jacob Surface (1806-1877), son of George, lived in Montgomery Co. VA. Jacob's son, George William Surface (1836-1925),and grandson Phillip Franklin Surface (1868-1925)remained on Montgomery Co. VA. Philip's son, William Edward, moved across the state line from Giles Co. VA to Mercer Co. WV to work in the coal mines.
