1957 As the daughter of Chief Cornstalk and niece of Tecumseh of the Shawnee nation, most probably this connection to the Greater Huron Nations and the Algonquin Indian tribes saved the family and helped them to return Virginia by 1775 to 1777. Thomas Soward was familiar with the Turkey Cove area in the Powell Valley, in what is now Scott County VA, as Thomas Berry, William McGaughy, and he went there to hunt buffalo in 1770 or 1771.

1958 As the wife of Devil Anse Hatfield, she was involved in one of the most famous feuds in American history. There have been thousands of books written about this squabble with the McCoys that almost caused a civil war between West Virginia and Kentucky. You will find a condensed version on Wikipedia.

The Chaffin family was also split, as some of their children has also married into the McCoys. Levicy's older sister Sarah married a McCoy.

To learn more about Vicy, the following is a transcript from Tom Chaffin, the grandson of her brother Moses Chaffin.

1965 At age 37, Margaret married her brother-in-law, William Nelson, 42 years old at time of marriage. William's first wife was Joseph Callahan's sister, Margaret Callahan and they had three children. The Callahan name is spelled in early records as both Callahan and Callahan. Margaret Worley was in mourning for all of her life to the extent she wore only dark colors.  A younger sister had drowned and at that time Margaret went into mourning. She lived on the Lee Highway and as a widow, raised her children by working as a housekeeper for the McKinnley Family in Emory, VA.

1920 WASHINGTON CO. VA Census states: Maggie Worley Callahan Nelson states her father, David Worley, was born in Illinois.

Family tradition says this baby is buried beside Joseph Callahan at Old Glade Cemetery, Washington Co. VA. This is probably the case as two graves were bought and Margaret is buried in the New Part of the Cemetery.

Page 411.--13th August, 1771. John Berry's estate appraised by Joseph Culton, John Walker, John Stewart--Bonds of Hugh and Francis McClung; Wm. McGaughey, not solvent; Robert Farice, not solvent; Peter Cutwright, solvent; Robt. Buchanan, solvent.

The earliest note for Hugh was that he went with two brothers, James and William to Augusta County, Virginia. They settled in the Timber Ridge community which was later incorporated into Rockbridge County. Apparently Hugh, with some sons, moved over the mountains into an area that later became Tennessee after being the State of Franklin in 1784-5 with John Sevier as governor. Congress debated this petition and then turned it down. Tennessee did not become a state until 1790. It was during the time that the settlers considered themselves as part of the State of Franklin, that Hugh wrote his will. It is interesting that the will is now on file in Greene County, TN.

Hugh and John were listed in the 1783 tax list for Greene County. This consecutive listing gave Robt Campbell, James Kerr, Jno McClung, Hugh McClung, Jno. Mitchell, and Wm. Wilson. Both Hugh and John were taxed for 200 acres.

By 1 Nov 1786, Hugh purchased 800 acres in Greene Co.: north side of Tennessee River below the mouth of the Highwassa (sic) River for 10 pounds per 100 acres.

Hugh, Sr. wrote his will just as he was acquiring land. The land was listed in the N.C. Land Grants. It was applied for several years before the grant was finalized. We know this because in 1783 John Hacket purchased 253 acres "being the second small bottom before McClung's 800 acre entry". Hugh's entry wasn't registered until 1786. At any rate, Hugh may have been making his will, not because he was in ill health but as a precaution as the owner of this large tract of land. The land records in Greene County, TN need to be searched to ascertain the disposition of this land. It was willed to the grandson, John Gibson. We do not know the reason for this but the record would need to be tracked through John Gibson.

Hugh McClung's will is on record in Greene County Tennessee for 21 Oct 1786. He registered it in the State of Franklin which was never recognized by Congress. In it he names his wife, Elizabeth, a son, whose name could not be read with certainty, and three daughters: Sarah, Elizabeth, and Susannah. He also names a grandson, John Gibson. The executors of the estate were wife, Elizabeth and Alexander Wilson. Witnessed by Andrew Martin, Alexander Wilson and John Wilson.

1991 Based on the Court Roll for the session held on May 29, 1477, Thomas Drake was then at least 12 years old, which places his birth in 1465 at the latest.

From "Drake in England" p. 82, 83:

"As Thomas Drakes he was presented for not being in tithing and aged 12 years and more at the Court held on 29 May 1477. It is interesting that, like his uncle and namesake Thomas Drake, he was apparently not living in the manor when his father died in 1510, for two years passed before he claimed his inheritance and, as we have seen, made provision for his sister's dower. The record of his admission to the lands and woods lately held by his father, to which he was admitted as the son and next heir, are described in detail on the Court Roll and is of interest in demonstrating this continuity of tenure in the family.

"To this Court comes Thomas Drake the son and heir of William Drake late of Lytelhey and is admitted by himself (i.e. in person) to nine acres of land, parcell of a half virgate of land called Eldefeldys, one acre and a half of land, parcell of Grangerys; two acres of land of the Blacche land; seven acres of land, parcell of a half virgate of land called Symonjeffreyes: one grove of wood and pasture containing two acres and a half called Grangerysgrove, and one croft of land containing one acre of land and a half called Grovecroft, parcell of a half virgate called Eldefeldes as his (word illegible) and inheritance." "Eldfeldys" is almost certainly to be identified with "Eldo land" held by Nicholas Drake who also held "Granger land" and a parcel of "Symon Geffray's land" ca. 1328.

Thomas Drake was elected to serve as Constable at the Court held on 15 June 1512, and appears in the Court Rolls as a juror several times between 1513 and 1522. He also acquired a croft containing two acres called Arnelles or Amgelles in the Rectory Manor of Great Waltham for which he paid a yearly rent of 18d. At the Court held on 5 February 1515 he did homage for a cotland containing 5 acres with three houses called Saches which he held in the right of his wife Agnes Butler. He died, leaving a will which has not survived, before the Court held at Great Waltham on 1 June 1542, when his death was reported and the will mentioned in a subsequent surrender.

At some time before his death Thomas Drake had settled at Slamsey in White Notley. This manor had belonged to Lees or Leighs Priory in Essex and, when leased by the Prior and Convent to Richard Duke on 12 May 1525, was held by "Thomas Colette of Moche (i.e. Great) Waltham" whose term had five years to run. After the suppression of the Priory the "manor of Slamesey als. Slamondesey als. Slampsey Oldhall and Brenthall" was granted by Letters Patent to Sir Richard Rich, the King's Solicitor-general and steward of Great Waltham, to hold as the twentieth part of a knight's fee. There was, therefore, ample reason for a tenant at Great Waltham acquiring other lands in White Notley. From the Lay Subsidy Of 1523-24 we know that neither Thomas nor any other Drake was taxed at White Notley but Agnes Drake was taxed there in 1543-44 and Thomas Drake buried there on 27 November 1541. "
