Colonel George Steuart and his wife Margaret Harris:

Their Ancestors and Descendants with Appendixes of Related Families Portraits and Illustrations

A Genealogical History By Robert Stewart, D.D., LL.D

This book was Printed at the "Civil and Military Gazette" Press, 1907 in Lahore, India pp.398-401

APPENDIX No. XI

A copy of this document was sent the author by John Harris9, M.D., of Philadelphia, Jan. 18, 1865.

At the conclusion he wrote: ?The foregoing was copied Aug. 10, 1855, by John Harris (then resident in Philadelphia) from two separate half sheets of cap paper, in the handwriting of his father, James Harris, in the possession of Mrs. Thomazin Potter, a granddaughter of James Harris. John Harris, the copyist of the foregoing, born Dec. 31st, 1792, was the son of James Harris, who was the son of John Harris who was the son of James Harris by his second wife, Janet McClure), who was the son of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas.

The antecedent probability that this document is perfectly
trustworthy has been confirmed by all subsequent investigations (excepting in regard to William Harris2 and his wife-see Appendix XVIII), and the writer considers it fortunate that he has had such a record to guide his researches.

Edward [Sr.] and Charles Harris, being dissenters, were driven from Ayrshire, in Scotland, at the time of the persecution of the Protestants In the reign of Charles II, or of his successor, James.

They settled in County Donegal, near Rapho, Ireland. They were possessed of a valuable estate in Scotland, which was lost on account of their abandoning it.

Edward [Sr.] was married to Miss Flora Douglas, of the famous family of that name, who resided near the borders of England. He had sons: Edward [Jr.], Robert and James.

James, son of Edward and Flora Douglas, married Mary Simpson by whom he had William, Ann and James. By a second
marriage with Janet McClure he had a son, John.

James, son of James Harris and Mary Simpson, never married, and is at this time (Dec. 20, 1801) living with his sister-
in-law, widow of his half brother, John, at Mifflintown, Mifflin Co., Penn'a.

Ralph de Gaël [her grandfather] married, in 1075 at Exning, Cambridgeshire, Emma, only daughter of William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford and his first wife Alice or Adelise (or Adelissa), daughter of Roger I of Tosny. Their offspring were:

1. William de Gael, [her uncle] succeeded his father as Seigneur de Gael. He claimed Breteuil after the death of his uncle William de Breteuil, but died shortly thereafter, according to Orderic Vitalis.

2. Raoul II de Gael, [her father] seigneur of Gael and Montfort. By 1119, he had obtained the honour of Breteuil in Normandy (his uncle William de Breteuil died 1103 without any legitimate issue). The Complete Peerage claims that his descendants in the male line continued to hold his estates in Brittany, acquiring Laval and Vitré in the 15th century with the marriage of the heiress of Montmorency-Laval, but such a male-line descent hasn't been traced. He had only one child by his wife, Amice (Amicia) (d. c. 31 August 1168) was initially betrothed to Richard, illegitimate son of Henry I and his mistress Ansfrida, but her betrothed died on the White Ship disaster in November 1120. She was then married to the King's ward Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester, second (twin) son of Robert de Beaumont, Count of Meulan.

3. Alain de Gael, [uncle] who went with his parents on the First Crusade and died in the Holy Land

1886 Anne was a WW II war bride from Coucy les Eppes, Picardy, in northern France, near the town of Laon. The village has had a stable population, with 793 souls in 1793 and 417 in 1946 when Anne and her husband were there. It's a farming community, growing primarily sugar beets at that time.

The farmers were unaware that farming could be dangerous. In November, 2010, Coucy les Eppes was evacuated for almost a week while specialized teams unearthed unexploded shells left over from World War I by the Germans who had an artillery depot around the village. They dug up 30 tons of non-chemical shells that were removed and destroyed. The shells were discovered by a resident who was digging in his garden.

This is not an unusual occurrence in France. Specialized units conduct at least 800 operations each year, removing 35 to 50 tons of ammunition.

Why was the vast amount of artillery shells there? The village had been chosen by the the seventh German army because of its strategic position. The railway line was built in August 1917 connecting to the junction of other railways lines. Coucy-lès-Eppes was chosen for the landing and storage of ammunition.

The town has become so important in the eyes of the occupant Castle Coucy-lès-Eppes was turned into the German headquarters. The Germans installed shell deposits near the road between Coucy to Marchais, on sandy soil, easy to dig. They also installed close to the railway station, so as to supply the front quickly. A part of them was intended for anti-aircraft guns hidden in the mountains of Festieux. The Chemin des Dames was obviously the final destination of the train that made the round trip several times a day.

Nancy Christian, wife of John Wesley Reed, was a daughter of Thomas Christian and Louisa (nee Harman) Christian. In a hillside cemetery overlooking the site of the old Reed homestead on Crane Creek in McDowell Co., WVA are the graves of John Wesley Reed, Sr and his wife Nancy (nee Christian) Reed. The tomstones at these graves are still legible and reveal the following vital data: "J. W. Reed, Sr., born at Rogersville, Tennessee, July 25, 1804, died June 18, 1888; Nancy, wife of J. W. Reed, born October 18, 1812, died December 2, 1887."
