    Charge: assault on H.W.P. Junius
    Defendant: James Slacum

[Note: Will try to get court record on this. It seems that Dr. Junius may not have been the upstanding clergyman as he presented himself according to the following newspaper article.]

    Rochester Democrat, August 17, 1858.

A Jeremy Diddler at Niagara Falls

"Some days since, a fine-looking and gentlemanly man, tolerably advanced in years, arrived at the International Hotel, Niagara Falls, with a female companion, and put upon the register the name of Dr. H W. P. JUNIUS and lady," from Lexington, Ky. In short, the Doctor wanted it known he was a southern gentleman traveling north for health and recreation."

He claimed he was robbed of all his money $300 in cash in $10 notes when it came time to leave the hotel. He was very anxious and upset of course, and the kindly hotelier, Mr. Osbourn, taking pity on him was assured Dr. Junius credit was good. So Dr. Junius arranged to a $250 draft on his bank in Louisville, KY for Mr. Osbourn to cash. In order to purchase the bank draft, Mr. Osborn had to give his bank a $70 check. All seemed fine and Dr. Junius with his lady left Saratoga. Mr. Osborn then found out the bank in Kentucky had never heard of Dr. Junius and a quick message was sent to the bank in Lockport not to cash the $70 check.

Dr. Junius returned to Lockport to cash his check and he was arrested. His lady was not with him, having been left in a Buffalo hotel. The good Dr. was taken to Niagra Falls where he "was unable to tell the names of any of the prominent men of that place [Lexington, KY] and some Simon Pure Kentucky gentlemen from that vicinity who happened to be staying at the Falls just now, happened to be ignorant of the existence of such a clergyman."

The article concluded with the possibility of his having to go to state prison in New York unless he can show his clean record.

Source:"Side-lights on Maryland History: With Sketches of Early Maryland Families" by Hester Dorsey Richardson, page 185

"Captain Henry Lake, son of Henry Lake, Sr., was commissioned captain of a company of Dorchester County militia in 1776. Some years later he was appointed judge or justice of Dorchester County, and in the year 1797 the important office of High Sheriff of the county was bestowed on him. Captain Henry Lake married Rhoda Jewett in the year 1762 and had, among the other children, a handsome daughter named Lovey [Lavinia] -- a name suggestive of the winsomeness which, added to her high spirit, made her a great belle.

An interesting family tradition, in which Lovey was the heroine, tells of her defiantly resisting the attempt of a British soldier to take off her silver shoe buckles. It appears that the marauding party set fire to the Lake house to take revenge on the pretty Lovey, who, however, not only extinguished the fire, but made her escape through a back window, never stopping until she reached her father's company of soldiers, who put the British ruffians to flight, glad to escape in their boats without their fair prisoner. The mother of this daughter of the Revolution also suffered in the cause, receiving a bayonet wound in the arm while resisting the capture of her husband."
