The period following the Civil War saw a tremendous building boom in the United States -- and Central New York was very much a part of this explosion. The population of Syracuse alone doubled in the years between 1880 and 1900.
Archimedes Russell was one of the area's busiest architects during this hectic period. He completed nearly 850 commissions during his forty-three year career, almost all of them in central New York. He was responsible for almost 600 commissions in the Syracuse area alone. By 1900 Russell had contributed more to the architecture of central New York than any other architect.
Born in Andover, Massachusetts in 1840, Russell received his early training from his father, a carpenter-builder, and John Stevens, a prominent Boston architect. At the age of 22, Russell came to Syracuse and joined the office of the city's leading architect, Horatio Nelson White. He opened his own office in 1868. From 1873 to 1881 he served as a professor of architecture at Syracuse University. In 1906 Russell took Melvin L. King as his partner and the firm was renamed Russell and King.
Russell was not only the city's most prolific architect following the Civil War, he was also one of its most resourceful. As they became available, he mastered the use of new techniques and materials growing out of America's growing technological capabilities, for instance cast ornamental panels composed of terra cotta and iron. A local newspaper article said of Russell, "His repertoire of styles and devices for ornamentation was endless and he was able to give the people of an era when prestige and ostentation were held synonymous exactly what they wanted."

Clement witnessed an 1802 deed (York Co. Deed 83:147) and received along with Joseph Russell, both of Waterboro, rights of usage in an Alfred sawmill, 5 Nov 1810 (York Co. Deed 83:148)
Since he witnessed a 12 Jan 1802 grantee deed (York Co. deeds 183:147.) for his father, he would have been at least 21 and most likely born by 1780.
Probably died in Waterboro after 14 Mar 1823 when he signed a conditional deed (York Co. Deed 112:72)
Fred Boyle's Early Families of Shapleigh-Acton, publisher Peter E. Randall, 2000 has the following:
CLEMENT, b. Waterboro, ME 1775-1784, (1810-20 censuses),[ ] son of Joseph and Aphia (Moody) Russell, probably d. Waterboro after 14 Mar 1823 when he signed a conditional deed (York Co. He witnessed an 1802 deed (York Co. Deed 83:147) and received along with Joseph Russell, both of Waterboro, rights of usage in an Alfred sawmill, 5 Nov 1810 (York Co. Deed 83:148). Census records indicate that Clement and Nancy had at least five boys and two girls. Their son Warren, born 1821, is described as an orphan at an early age. Marriage intentions of Joseph Russell and Apphia Moody filed Sanford, ME 13 April 1776 where the bride was recorded as "Effies" Moody. The marriage record of Joseph Russell to APPHIA MOODY was found in the records of the First Parish Church of Kennebunk.
LAND RECORDS
JOSEPH Russell, Jr. was the Massabesic (Waterborough, Sanford, Alfred areas of Maine) soldier who enlisted in Captain John Smith's Company which reported to Col. Cutts Aug ye 20th 1778 Maine Historical and Gen.Recorder 8 (1895):84 (Massabesick was the old name for Waterboro and N. Alfred)
In 1791, Joseph and Abigail conveyed additional land in Waterborough to their son "Joseph Russell, Junr York Deeds 56:40.
Deed in York Co. Court House, 30 Apr 1793 Abigail Russell of Sanford, ME sold to Joseph Russell of Waterboro, 1 and 1/2 acres of land for 6 pounds.
1816: Nine acres of land in Waterboro by the Shapleigh line conveyed to Joseph Russell by Timothy Pike (York County Deedbook 94:186)
An 1872 map of Alfred shows that the Russell property was located on the narrow northern strip of Alfred that lay between Waterboro and Shapleigh. Lots 31 and 32 were adjacent to the northernmost tip of what would become the town of Alfred and what is now called Alfred Gore. Alfred was a part of the town of Sanford, Maine, until 1794, when it became a separate town. The shape of Alfred was then pointed at the north and even called a "triangle" in early deeds. We know that the Russells owned land in Massabesick "by the highway and land of John Bean," as this land was described in Joseph, Sr. and Abigail's deed to their daughter, Sarah in 1783. (YD, 50:224).
By 4 January 1845, Joshua Russell, a son of Joseph, Jr. and grandson of Joseph, Sr. and Abigail Russell, gathered signatures to a petition to annex his land to the town of Alfred. Basically the petitioners described the difficulties of being citizens of Waterboro, given their location and the lack of roads to the center of Waterboro. The petition requested a new boundary, using part of the middle branch of the Mousam River to separate the towns. The petition was also signed by Mary Russell, the widow of Joshua's brother, David, and four others. It was unsuccessful until the following year the petitioners returned with 47 signatures and in 1847, the new boundary line was established and the Russell homesteads became a part of Alfred. (Research by Edward Cook of Shapleigh and his brother John of Alfred who now in 2004 lives in the original home of Joseph and Abigail Towle Russell),

Mary's father, Joseph Russell would have been turning 45 in 1755 and Aphia, 43. Mary had already married in 1794 and was in the James Bean household in Alfred. It appears possible that by 1810 the elder Joseph had moved to Alfred too and the Joseph Russell in 1810 Waterboro was Mary's brother, since there is no mark for a female over 45 in the Joseph Russell household of 1810.
