    Notes:

On 10 March 1802, Jonathan Russell of Stowe, Vermont purchased land from Clement and Daniel Moody, also of Stowe. In February of 1804, however, they were among a group of families directed to depart the town within 8 days. Jonathan sold his property in Stowe (Stowe Deeds 3:41) and removed to western New York, where Jonathan was among the first settlers of Henrietta, New York. Jonathan and Dolly seem to recall their New England roots, and name children Clement, Joseph, Affia, and Moody-as well as Abial, Royal, Maria, and Marietta

The History of of Monroe County, New York states that in 1807 Jonathan Russell moved in (from Stowe, VT), and built a log house, Jonathan married a total of three times. and died in Webster, NY, age 70, 30 June 1860.

After marrying in ME, Jonathan and Dolly relocated to Stowe, VT. Dolly and Jonathan were said to have bought the land in Stowe from Daniel and Clement Moody believed to be Dolly's brothers. Then Jonathan and Dolly left Stowe, Vermont and settled in Boyle (now part of Henrietta) in 1807 (they had 7 children: Joseph (b. in VT), Affia (b. VT), Clement (b. VT) John Moody, who was the 2nd (white) male born in Henrietta, Abial (who supposedly left Henrietta and was never heard from again), Royal, Marie and Marietta (b. Henrietta).

Sometime before 1850, Dolly died and Jonathan marries Orpha Hayden. He and Orpha appear on the 1850 census in Webster. Why he moved? I don't know. All three were buried together in the West Brighton Cemetery and they were later moved (with the cemetery) to Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester. At the time of his death he was married to a woman named Mary who appears with him on the 1860 census and whom he names in his will. I have no further info on her. There is a short bio on Jonathan in "Northfield on the Genesee - Early Times in Monroe Co., NY" His daughter Marietta married Abel Fenner and they remained in Henrietta until their deaths. John Moody Russell (the 2nd male born in Henrietta) is my GGGGrandfather. He relocated to Kendall, Orleans Co., NY. He married Caroline Carrington and they had 7 children including a daughter the named Mariette.

    LAND RECORDS

JOSEPH Russell, Jr. was the Massabesic (Waterborough, Sanford, Alfred areas of Maine) soldier who enlisted in Captain John Smith's Company which reported to Col. Cutts Aug ye 20th 1778 Maine Historical and Gen.Recorder 8 (1895):84 (Massabesick was the old name for Waterboro and N. Alfred)

In 1791, Joseph and Abigail conveyed additional land in Waterborough to their son "Joseph Russell, Junr York Deeds 56:40.

Deed in York Co. Court House, 30 Apr 1793 Abigail Russell of Sanford, ME sold to Joseph Russell of Waterboro, 1 and 1/2 acres of land for 6 pounds.

1816: Nine acres of land in Waterboro by the Shapleigh line conveyed to Joseph Russell by Timothy Pike (York County Deedbook 94:186)

An 1872 map of Alfred shows that the Russell property was located on the narrow northern strip of Alfred that lay between Waterboro and Shapleigh. Lots 31 and 32 were adjacent to the northernmost tip of what would become the town of Alfred and what is now called Alfred Gore. Alfred was a part of the town of Sanford, Maine, until 1794, when it became a separate town. The shape of Alfred was then pointed at the north and even called a "triangle" in early deeds. We know that the Russells owned land in Massabesick "by the highway and land of John Bean," as this land was described in Joseph, Sr. and Abigail's deed to their daughter, Sarah in 1783. (YD, 50:224).

By 4 January 1845, Joshua Russell, a son of Joseph, Jr. and grandson of Joseph, Sr. and Abigail Russell, gathered signatures to a petition to annex his land to the town of Alfred. Basically the petitioners described the difficulties of being citizens of Waterboro, given their location and the lack of roads to the center of Waterboro. The petition requested a new boundary, using part of the middle branch of the Mousam River to separate the towns. The petition was also signed by Mary Russell, the widow of Joshua's brother, David, and four others. It was unsuccessful until the following year the petitioners returned with 47 signatures and in 1847, the new boundary line was established and the Russell homesteads became a part of Alfred. (Research by Edward Cook of Shapleigh and his brother John of Alfred who now in 2004 lives in the original home of Joseph and Abigail Towle Russell),

Mary's father, Joseph Russell would have been turning 45 in 1755 and Aphia, 43. Mary had already married in 1794 and was in the James Bean household in Alfred. It appears possible that by 1810 the elder Joseph had moved to Alfred too and the Joseph Russell in 1810 Waterboro was Mary's brother, since there is no mark for a female over 45 in the Joseph Russell household of 1810.

    Notes:

Joseph moved to Maine and may have been a Revolutionary War veteran.

A trio of genealogically informative Rockingham county, New Hampshire deed record not only establish Joseph's parentage and that of his wife, but also place the couple in Providence, Rhode Island 19 May 1753, Epping, New Hampshire 2 February 1763, and Exeter, New Hampshire 29 April 1766 (Rockingham Co., NH deeds 43:442, 34:728, and 84:243 for place locations).

In 1763, Joseph and Abigail Russell, now of Epping, New Hampshire, conveyed their rights to the estate of Richard Long of Salisbury, which fell to "my honored mother, Sarah Russell, wife of William Russell." The deed further states that both Joseph's parents were deceased, that Joseph's mother Sarah was a sister to Richard Long, and that her share was one-quarter of the estate.

By deed, 12 Mar 1764, John Clough of Brentwood, Elisha Clough of Kingston, Joseph Russell of Exeter, and Samuel and Eleanor Welch of Suncook, all of the province of New Hampshire, conveyed to Jonathon Moulton of Hampton, Esq., all their rights in land in Exeter that they had inherited from their uncle Richard Long of Salisbury, deceased

19 April 1777 deed of nearby Rockingham county, New Hampshire, mentions Joseph Russell of Massabesick (Rockingham Co. deeds 109:64).

W.W. Clayton's History of York County, Maine reports that Joseph Russell was one of the first settlers of Massabesick, as the plantation was known before its incorporation as the town of Waterborough in 1787. Clayton also writes, "Prior to 1768 the entire tract was a vast wilderness into which no highways penetrated and which was traversed only along Indian trails and over logging roads, which had been built through various parts of the town by settlers from the Atlantic coast who souht this territory for the magnificent pines and oaks which covered it, for use in shipbuilding at home and for export, a large business enterprise from Portsmouth to Portland. Massabesick Plantation included a portion of northern Alfred, called the Gore. The name came from Massabesick Pond (now Shaker Pond) coming from the name of an Indian chief residing on its western shore. The name Massabesick was confirmed by resolve of the General Court of Massachusetts."

3 Nov 1783, Joseph Russell, "husbandman of Massabesick," conveyed land "in Massabesick by the highway and land of John Bean" to his wife Abigail and Sarah Russell (York Deeds 50: 224)

Joseph Russell was one of 30 signers of the petition of 1785 by the Inhabitants of the Plantation of Massabesick in the county of York who "humbly sheweth that thay Labour under sum Very Great Inconveniances for want of being Incorporated and wish to be Put in a better situation for Doing their Duty wherfore Your Petitioners Earnestly Pray that their Plantation may be incorporated into a Town acording to the Plan herewith Presented to Gether with a gore of Land containing about Eighteen hundred acres Lying between Sanford and Shapleighton and adjoining the aforesaid Plantation and your Petitioners as in Duty Bound will Ever pray &c." And so Waterborough came into being by act of the sitting Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, March 6 1787. It was named in honor of Col. Josiah Waters, one of the early proprietors of Massabesick.

1791, Joseph and Abigail conveyed additional land in Waterborough to their son "Joseph Russell, Junr."[ ] In 1792, Joseph and Abigail conveyed livestock to their (still unmarried) daughter Sarah Russell (York Deeds 56: 304)

On 1 December 1726, "William Russell of Hampton, maltster," sold "all of my now dwelling house and malthouse barn and 14 acres near Gougos wigwam, (NH Province Deeds, 15:432) possibly in preparation for a move to Providence, Rhode Island.

William filed an Eastern claim to Scarboro property on behalf of his wife, Sarah, and her siblings. (Rockingham Co., NH deed 10: 388) The deed indicates that William was "of Providence, Rhode Island" in 1728, but he was back in Hampton by April of 1737 when he sold property in Salisbury. (Rockingham Co., NH deed 73:250)

A deed shows that William was "of Providence, Rhode Island" by 1 May 1728 when he sold to John Hardy of Hampton by 9 November 1736 when his daughter, "Mary of William, late of Providence but now of Hampton, New Hampshire," married Jeremiah Brown in Providence. (James N. Arnold, Vital Records of RI, 1630-1850, 21 vols, 2: Providence, 25, citing Providence Marriages, 1:78.).

His place and date of death would have been in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire prior to 6 Nov 1761 when his estate was administered by his son David Russell, of Johnston, RI,

The inventory, valued at 712 pounds 7 shillings, included property valued at 30 pounds "in the hands of Anna French, Mercy Hoag, and Sarah Elkins, 10 pounfd each." who may be daughters of William Russell. In support of this is the fact that William's son David Russell of Johnston, RI, husbandman, and Nathaniel French and Elijah Hoag, both of Epping, yeomen, were appointed sureties in the sum 500 pounds. Given the deeds signed by Joseph Russell, and his sister, Mary (Russell) Brown for the Long family property, it appears that they were the only surviving children of William and his first wife, Sarah (Long) Russell. William's other children were likely from his second marriage to Elizabeth(Chase) Russell.

William was back in Hampton by 9 November 1736 when his daughter, Mary, married Jeremiah Brown in Providence. Mary Russell Brown seems to be the ongoing link to Rhode Island. Joseph never owned property in Rhode Island, but may have gone there for a time after his sister Mary married. She appears to have remained in RI where her husband's family was established. Jeremiah Brown had a brother, Gideon in Johnston, and John in Providence who were involved in land transactions involving Jeremiah and Mary (Russell) Brown recorded in 1758, 1769, and 1781. David Russell was still in Johnston, Rhode Island, when he administered the estate of his father in 1761, but later returned to NH (Richmond), where 8 children were born, before moving to Seneca Co., NY
