OTHER RECORDS
Beverly W. Cluverius is signer number 21 in the Petition to Amend the "Oyster Laws", December 22, 1847 Gloucester Co. VA
Virginia Marriages 1851-1929, Richmond City, 11 May 1853 B. W. Cluverius married Esther W. Sale, his first wife.
B. W. Cluverius name is among those engraved on the monument to confederate soldiers from King William Co. that stands in the county courthouse complex.
Tyler's Historical and Genealogical Magazine gave his name Bailey Whiting Cluverius. All other census and legal records have his name as Beverly W. Cluverius. His name has also been given as Beverly William Cluverius, I think Whiting is correct. His grandmother was Susanna Whiting who married Gibson Cluverius. Tyler was usually quite accurate with his information, and there was a family connection through the Seawell family who married into the Tyler's. Beverly's mother was Courtney Seawell, whose brother John B. Seawell married Maria Henry Tyler, sister of President John Tyler.

Narrative of Maria Edwards, daughter of John B. Seawell and Maria Henry Tyler.
My grandfather, after his marriage, continued to live with his parents at their seat (Gloucester Place), which at their death he inherited. My grandfather was a vestryman of Abingdon church. He died at forty-six years of age, leaving my father and his old friend, Benjamin Dabney, his exors. He left a very large estate, lands and negroes. My father went first to the grammar school, and then to the college of William and Mary. His father said he regretted having sent him to William and Mary because he came home a Democrat, he being a Federalist. I heard my father say that after he was married it was proposed at a large dinner party at Belle Farm (Col. Lewis' residence) that his father should be brought out as a candidate for the Legislature, and the votes of those present were taken on the proposition. When father's turn came to vote he said he would not vote for him, when his father immediately declined the proposition, saying he could not consent to run if his own son would oppose him.

p. 12
Humphrey was a major in the state militia and sheriff of King and Queen Co. He was regularly elected to the General Assembly for 9 sessions, and was a planter and gentleman who moved easily in society. His lineage was from Tidewater society that had intermarried for generations. He owned a carriage and entertained frequently. It was not unusual for there to be 18 people for dinner with seven dishes of meat, four vegetables, pickles, a fine pudding, pie, tarts, cheese, wine and cider.
p. 15-16
Frances Temple was his first cousin.
Humphrey also inherited Locust Grove, building the present house, after the second house burned down around 1816. The new house had fewer, but larger rooms, allowing the river breezes on both sides of the structure. An alley of locust trees framed the entrance.
In 1820 he owned 745 acres, only 19 more landowners in King and Queen had more than he did, and only ten claimed more a thousand acres. On a tax list of 1800 Humphrey owned 6 horses, 4 wheeled vehicles, 18 adult and 6 teen-aged slaves.
