OBITUARY

CROSSVILLE ? Edna Lee (Barnes) Morgan, 87, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 7, 2010. Funeral services were held Oct. 11 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Dennis Lovell officiating. Final resting place was in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Morgan was the daughter of the late Wendel and Athelia (Boyd) Barnes.

God gave her a gift of being able to grow anything. Her hands were always busy. She always loved doing new things and was always ready to try something new. She made friends easily but never forgot her old friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Eva Matthews and Judy Argo of McMinnville; sons, Dexter Brady of McMinnville and Dallas, Stanley, Thomas and Donald Brady, all of Crossville; sister, Earlene Doak of McMinnville; sister-in-law, Mildred Barnes of McMinnville; and brother-in-law, Robert Moffitt of Columbus, OH.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Herman Brady and Ervin Morgan; daughters, Tina Brady and Bonnie Norris; brother, Lowell Barnes; and sister, Olivene Moffitt.

Pallbearers were Arthur Dearmon, Wayne Keyes, Bruce Smith, Daniel Killian, Mark Argo and Jimmy Brady.

BIOGRAPHY

He was the founder of Boyd Nursery Company in Warren County Tennessee, which has been under family ownership for five generations. At one time they were the third largest provider of nursery stock in the world.

By 1887, JHH Boyd had started his nursery business in the Gage community, Sequatchie Co. TN. Operating under the name JHH Boyd, Nurseryman and Seed Collector, JHH began to experience significant success. By the late 1890s, his products were being sent all over the world by virtue of his established reputation of having exotic and rare plants and seeds. In 1904 JHH moved to Irving College to be closer to the railroad and because the soil was better suited for growing large fields of nursery stock.

In 1907, JHH was approached by Frederick Law Olmsted for the purchase of plants for the reforestation program being conducted within the Biltmore Estates of Asheville, North Carolina. Sending an order of close to a million seedlings in a refrigerated railroad car, the Biltmore Estates shipment helped establish Forest Nursery on solid financial footing.

While the orchard business experienced a drastic decline during prohibition, interest in landscaping brought an increase in the sale of other trees, plants, and vines. Grafting and budding became standard processes in the industry allowing standing mutations and more attractive plants. JHH was ever quick to notice to an unusual shrub or tree and add it to his stock. The pink dogwood is a classic example of this practice. JHH?s unique passion for flora discovery and fertilization led him to experiment and innovate his industry.

Excerpt from Tate Families of the Southern States, Volume II, 1984, by Laura W. Mentzel & Ethel S. Updike

He enlisted in the Confederacy on August 7, 1863, in Jackson County, AL in Company "K", 3rd Confederate Regiment. He was released May 5, 1865. He stated he had a wife and one daughter, aged 28, but did not give her name. He stated later that he had eight children, six girls and two sons, but none of their names were recited. He married in Warren County, TN on July 5, 1866 by the Reverand Lyon Brown at St. Mary's Church, Adelaide Deering, born March 10, 1843 of McMinnville, Warren County, TN. Witnesses at their wedding Thomas Brown and Annie Rogers. She stated she was born in TN, her father born in VA and her mother in TN. She died on June 2, 1932 after having received his pension for some time.

In a letter from James Striegel Tate to Ethel Updike on June 9, 1978, he wrote:

"Dock Mayburn Tate was born in DeKalb County, AL on October 8, 1846. He was the son of Aaron Tate, Jr.) On August 7, 1863 he enlisted in Co. "K" of the 3rd (also 11th) Confederate Cavalry Regiment in Jackson County, AL. He was paroled on May 5, 1854 at Guntersville, AL. On July 22, 1908 he filed for a pension which was granted under number 10,345. He died at Cagle, Sequatchie County, TN on August 5, 1923. On July 5, 1866 in Warren County, TN he married Adelaide Deering, born in McMinnville TN. On December 20, 1923 she filed for a widow's pension which was granted under No. 7999. Her application stated there were two sons (aged 41 and 46) and six daughters (aged 38, 44, 49, 51, 53, 54). They are not on the Sequatchie Census for 1870 and 1880 is too dim to read."
