OBITUARY

Donald Clayton PATTON

Coalmont, TN resident and Warren County native Donald Clayton Patton, age 77, was born December 4, 1928 and died July 28, 2006 at his residence following an extended illness.

A service representative for Metro Mineral, a United States Marines veteran having served during the Korean War and a member of the Beersheba Springs Church of Christ, he was the son of the late Raliegh Miller and Dollie Mae Seamons Patton. He was married May 27, 1949 to Virginia Phifer Patton of Coalmont, TN.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Dollie and Jacky Ray Davis of Nashville, TN and Melissa Mitchell of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren, Lauren and Chris Dowdy, Courtney and Kyle Mayfield and Ben Mitchell all of Abilene, TX; two sisters and brother-in-law, Jo Sarazen of Shelby, NC and Wanda and George Reese of Pensacola, FL and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Kay Patton of LaFayette, GA.

A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2006 in High's Chapel with John Payne officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Highlands or Beersheba Springs Church of Christ Building Fund.

OBITUARY

Murfreesboro, TN resident and Warren County, TN native Virginia Phifer Patton, age 84, was born December 13, 1931 and died January 16, 2016 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro following an extended illness.

A member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Forest and Mary Boyd Phifer. She was married May 27, 1949 to Don Patton who preceded her in death in 2006. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James, "Pip" and Cliff Phifer; and sister, Gert Brady.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dollie Virginia and Jacky Ray Davis of Nashville, TN and Melissa Ann and Larry Copeland of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren and spouses, Lauren and Chris Dowdy of Dallas, TX, Courtney and Kyle Mayfield of Nashville, TN and Ben and Hayley Mitchell of Austin, TX; seven great-grandchildren, Silas Dowdy, Leighton, Brooke and Hudson Mayfield, and Ainsley, Blakely and Jaxon Mitchell; and sister, Sue Brock of Smyrna, TN.

Don and Virginia both grew up in McMinnville, and attended Central High School together, where they became high school sweethearts. They lived in North Carolina for a year while Don was in the Marines during 1953, then they moved back to McMinnville. They later moved with their family to LaFayette, GA in 1962, and then to Nashville in 1976. They retired to Altamont, TN in 1993, and lived there until Don died in 2006.

Mrs. Patton did office and secretarial work for several places, including the Department of Family and Children's Services in LaFayette, and in real estate and accounting offices in Nashville. She loved to travel, especial with her husband, and they traveled all over with his job, especially out west. She also traveled to several foreign countries doing mission work (Czechoslovakia, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand). She loved gardening, pretty flowers and hummingbirds, she was a great cook, and enjoyed sharing all these things with family and friends. She especially loved doing anything with her three grandchildren, and she was lovingly called "Granny". She was very, very special to them as well as to her two daughters and their husbands, and to "Pafie", her husband of 57 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the chapel of Cannonsburgh Village, 312 S. Front Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37129. Friends and family will gather to visit following the service in the gazebo next to the chapel from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

He was the founder of Boyd Nursery Company in Warren County Tennessee, which has been under family ownership for five generations. At one time they were the third largest provider of nursery stock in the world.

By 1887, JHH Boyd had started his nursery business in the Gage community, Sequatchie Co. TN. Operating under the name JHH Boyd, Nurseryman and Seed Collector, JHH began to experience significant success. By the late 1890s, his products were being sent all over the world by virtue of his established reputation of having exotic and rare plants and seeds. In 1904 JHH moved to Irving College to be closer to the railroad and because the soil was better suited for growing large fields of nursery stock.

In 1907, JHH was approached by Frederick Law Olmsted for the purchase of plants for the reforestation program being conducted within the Biltmore Estates of Asheville, North Carolina. Sending an order of close to a million seedlings in a refrigerated railroad car, the Biltmore Estates shipment helped establish Forest Nursery on solid financial footing.

While the orchard business experienced a drastic decline during prohibition, interest in landscaping brought an increase in the sale of other trees, plants, and vines. Grafting and budding became standard processes in the industry allowing standing mutations and more attractive plants. JHH was ever quick to notice to an unusual shrub or tree and add it to his stock. The pink dogwood is a classic example of this practice. JHH?s unique passion for flora discovery and fertilization led him to experiment and innovate his industry.
