Three Deaths in One Family

Three members of one family passed away in one week at the home of Elijah Barnett on the head of Dry Fork. On Wednesday of last week his sister, Miss Barnett, died aged 89, and on Saturday his wife. Shown Barnett, passed away aped 76, and on Monday of this week Mr. Barnett joined the loved ones, he being in his 84th year. All the deaths were due to the infirmities of old age.

The Barnetts were raised on Dry Fork, in West Virginia, near where Yukon is now located. Several years ago they Bold their property to the Yukon Coal Company and moved to the Barker farm in this county where they have since resided, and all three were buried in the family burying ground on their present home place.

THREE DEATHS IN ONE FAMILY

Last Monday Elijah Barnett died at his home oh Dry Fork, aged 83 years. The Saturday before, his wife, 76 years old, was buried. A few days before, in the same week, his maiden sister, Sallie, who lived with him, died, aged 89 years. Mr. Barnett and his wife died of pneumonia, and the sister may also have had the same disease. The deaths of these aged people occurring in the same house within a weeks time, is a remarkable coincidence. We recall no similar occurrence. Mr. Barnett came to this county from West Virginia about a year ago. A few days ago he was in town, and called at this office, appearing in good health and reasonably active for a man of his years. James enlisted, along with his sons William James and John to fight for the Confederacy. in Co. C of the 34th Virginia Cavalry under Col. W. A. Witcher. He is listed as Whitaker, Sr. J. with the rank of private.

James was killed by Union marauders or bushwackers at his gate. He lived on Belcher Ridge, later known as Whitaker Ridge, which straddled Tazewell County VA and McDowell Co. WV. This area was a battleground between Confederate and Union sympathizers, pitting neighbor against neighbor and sometimes splitting families. All of his neighbors supported the Confederacy, but the area wasn't immune from raiding parties of Union soldiers or Union partisans.

One piece of family lore that has been handed down is that he taught singing by notes and using a pitch pipe to get the key.

James married Nancy PETTS 27 Feb 1843, Smyth Co. VA. Nancy (daughter of Adam PETTS and Delilah Fanning) was born Jul 1824, Wythe County, VA; died Bef 1910. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

from Bristol, VA area Moved family to KY after husband was killed in 1863. Went in a wagon with all her children and belongings. She returned after the war. Some of her children remained. Alex remained, living in Morgan Co., KY. He spelled his name Whiteaker and so did his children.
