OBITUARY

Staunton Spectator and Vindicator; 18 May 1906

Mr. Archibald G. Christian, after an illness of two years, in which he several times was thought to be near death's door, died at 7 o'clock Friday night at home near Mt. Spring, in his 72nd year. Mr. Christian was the son of John B. and Jane Christian of Augusta county, and brother of the late Col. Bolivar Christian.

He was educated at Washington College, now Washington and Lee, and served the Confederacy in the 10th Va. cavalry. He was a man of fine natural ability, which he cultivated through life by reading and study, being one of the best informed men in the county. Social, hospitable and generous, he was known and esteemed all over the county. For many years he had been a prominent member of Bethel Presbyterian church.

Mr. Christian married Miss Martha Sproul, who died many years ago. Surviving Mr. Christian are six children from this union: Mr. Lee S. Christian of the county, Mrs. B.F. Cockrell of Nashville, Tenn., and Misses Fannie, Sallie, Mary and Mattie Christian, at home. He was also related to many of the well known families of this county.

The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from Bethel church, and was conducted by Rev. C.L. Altfather, the pastor. A large concourse assembled to pay tribute to a departed friend and neighbor, quite a number attending from this city. The following gentle men acted as pall bearers: Active -- Messrs. John H. McClure, Wilson M. Brown, W.W. King, R.F. Wallace, J. Marshall McClure and Dr. C.W. Roller. Honorary -- Messrs. Samuel F. Pilson, John W. Churchman, J. Alex Bumgardner, R.F. Larew, Frank H. McFarland, Edward T. Pilson and John A. Sproul.

Finley vs. Tate--O. S. 280; N. S. 99--Bill by Samuel Finley and Mary, his wife, daughter of John Tate, who died December, 1802, testate. John's son, Isaac, removed to Kentucky. John at death left following children, viz: Oratrix Mary (married at that time). Nancy also married then to Adam McChesney, Ellen, Drusilla, Jane, Elizabeth, Clorinda, one other daughter and two sons, all since dead under age, unmarried and intestate. Nancy McChesney died soon after her father, leaving an only child, Jane Eliza McChesney. Her husband, Adam McChesney, has also died, leaving Jane Eliza his only heir and infant. Ellen is now wife of John Finley of North Carolina. Drusilla has married John D. Ewin of Rockbridge. Jane has married Jacob Vanlear of Augusta.
