    Col. Thomas Clyde McSwain Jr. (retired, U.S. Air Force,) 64, of Shepherdstown, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at his residence, surrounded by his family, while under the care of Hospice.

    Born Dec. 29, 1945, in Lexington, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Clyde McSwain Sr. and Isabel Sterrett Anderson McSwain.

    Col. McSwain entered the Air Force through Officer Training School in 1969 after graduating from the University of Virginia with a bachelor of science degree in commerce. He served during his first two assignments as a commissary officer at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, and Anderson AFB, Guam. While on Guam, he became the chief of services with a follow-on assignment at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, as chief of services. Col. McSwain then attended the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, and graduated with a master of science degree in logistics management.

    In May 1989, Col. McSwain was assigned to Headquarters, Tactical Air Command as the director of housing and services. Soon thereafter, as a member of the U.S. Central Air Forces' Rear Battle Staff during Desert Storm, he was the driving force behind food service, lodging, mortuary, laundry and exchange support for more than 55,000 Air Force people at 25 sites in five countries across the Arabian Peninsula.

    He retired May 31, 1996, as the director of services, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. Col. McSwain is a graduate of Air War College and Air Command and Staff College. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.

    He was president of Locust Hill Graveyard Foundation, treasurer with the Jamestown Society and a member of Washington Assembly. He also was a fourth great-nephew of Meriwether Lewis.

    He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Shepherdstown.

    He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jane Crane McSwain; two daughters and their spouses, Kristin McSwain and Natalie Rivkin McSwain of Boston and Kimberly Check and Robert Paul Check of Poquoson, Va.; three grandchildren, Robert McCandlish Check, Thomas Jay Check and Anderson James Rivkin McSwain; one sister, Susan McSwain Lee of Chesapeake, Va.; five nieces and nephews; and three great-nieces and nephews.

    Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown, with the Rev. G.T. Schramm officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

    STAUNTON, VA. - Thomas Clyde McSwain, age 95, of Staunton, Va., died Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Augusta Health, Fishersville, Va.

    Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Cleveland County, N.C., he was the son of the late Elam and Annie (Bell) McSwain.

    A well known educator throughout Virginia, he was Superintendent of Staunton Schools for 17 years from 1961 until his retirement in 1978.

    He held a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., which he attended on a full athletic scholarship playing football, baseball and basketball. Following graduation from Lenoir-Rhyne College he played professional baseball in North Carolina. Where he also began his career as an educator in 1940 as well as coached in the Rowan County School System in Rockwell, NC. He received his master's degree in education from the University of Virginia in 1954.

    He served in the United States Navy during WWII having enlisted in 1942 in former heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney's physical fitness program, called the Tuna Fish, to help train recruits. His classmates included Sammy Snead, Bob Feller, Phil Rizzuto and Peewee Reese. He was commissioned in 1943 and was named commanding officer of a destroyer escort based in Norfolk and when the war ended he was headed for the Far East.

    Following the War he returned to civilian life and later joined the Navy Reserve unit based at Fishersville, Va., and was commanding officer with the rank of lieutenant commander for three years.

    He joined the Staunton School System in 1946 as a physical education teacher at the city's five schools; and as coach of three sports and classroom teacher (math and history) at R.E. Lee High School.

    He left the classroom and coaching after the 1951-52 season to go into administration and opened and was principal at three new schools: Bessie Weller for four years; Westside, two years; and Northside, one year. He was appointed to the position of assistant superintendent in 1958 and he was named superintendent in 1961. During his tenure as Superintendent he led in the integration of the school system, a major building program of new schools and closure of most of the former segregated black schools.

    In 1964, he also served as the President of the Virginia Education Association. Citing his contribution to education, not only in Staunton but throughout the state, the School Board renamed Northside Elementary School in his honor upon his retirement in 1978.

    He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Staunton where he earlier served as an Elder and as a member of its Christian Education Committee and taught a Sunday school class of teen-age boys.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabel Anderson McSwain; and two sisters, Gladys McSwain Thornburg and Adell McSwain Lovelace.

    He is survived by his second wife, Theresa (Peiffer) McSwain of Staunton; a son, Colonel (Ret) Thomas C. McSwain, Jr. and wife, Jane Crane of Shepherdstown, W.V.; daughter, Susan McSwain Lee of Chesapeake, Va. and her fiancé, James Ingram of Lesage, W.V.; stepson, Donald Peiffer and wife, Barbara of Rural Hall, N.C.; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Service and Burial: A funeral service will held on Tuesday, April 27, at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 100 East Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401, with Rev. Dr. Richard S. Dietrich officiating. Interment will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be the grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will include the staff and administrators of the Staunton City Schools attending the funeral service.

    Visitation: The family will receive friends on Monday, April 26, from 7-9 p.m. at the church.

    Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, P.O. Box 815, Staunton, VA 24402. Donations will put towards a scholarship, to be established, in memory of Mr. McSwain.

    Interment services were held in Lexington Cemetery Sunday afternoon for Rev. Alden Scott Anderson, 51, prominent Presbyterian minister and pastor of the church in Badin, North Carolina who died suddenly Saturday morning at the home of his brother, Rev. Alfred S. Anderson in Camerton, North Carolina Dr. James J. Murry, pastor of Lexington Presbyterian Church conducted the services.

    Mr. Anderson was born at Ivy Depot, near Charlottesville, a son Charles Harper Anderson and Sarah Scott Anderson, and was educated at Davidson College and the Union Theological Seminary at Richmond. He married Isabella Sterrett, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Sterrett of Rockbridge County.

    Surviving are his wife and three children, Isabella Anderson, Laura Anderson, and Alden Anderson, Jr., all of who attended the funeral here. Also attending the funeral were Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Anderson of Camerton, North Carolina; Mr. and Mrs. Scott Anderson of Richmond; Miss. Mary Wilson, Charlotte, North Carolina; W. J. Davis, P.M. Dulin, D. Clark and H. E. Keller of Badin.

    Isabel Sterrett Anderson, 91, of Staunton, widow of the Rev. Alden Scott Anderson, died Thursday afternoon in King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton.

    She was born on May 14, 1890, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Madison McClung Sterrett and Laura Smith Sterrett. Mrs. Anderson was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church.

    Survivors include a son, Dr. Alden S. Anderson, Jr. of Staunton; two daughters, Mrs. Isabel McSwain of Staunton and Mrs. Annie Laurie Vanstone of Nashville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

    A service was conducted Sunday afternoon in the chapel of Lexington Presbyterian Church by Dr. J.H.J. Vernon and Dr. L. Randolph Harrison. Burial was in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.
