    Hilda McKenzie Whitaker, 77 , passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 27, 2015 at Memorial University Medical Center.

    She was born in Lee County (Ashland Community), South Carolina on July 10, 1938. She attended the schools of Lee County, SC. After graduation, she attended the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1959. She met her husband while she was in nursing school and they married in 1960. After marrying, they moved to Charleston for 3 years before moving to Savannah. While is Savannah, she served several terms on the Metropolitan Planning Commission.

    She was preceded in death by her father, James Wallace McKenzie, Jr. She is survived by her mother, Claudia McKenzie; husband of 55 years, Joseph M. Whitaker; children, Joseph F. Whitaker (Cindy), Natasha Whitaker Smith (Lee), Laura Whitaker Brendle (Tommy); grandchildren, Joseph Michael Whitaker (Kelli), Elizabeth Whitaker, Christine Smith, Caroline Smith; four great- grandchildren; brothers, James (Butch) McKenzie (Doris), Errol Hill McKenzie (Harriet), Kay Elmore and several nieces, nephews and cousins and her beloved Corgi, Flossie.

    A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Please note: Formal attire is extremely discouraged. Please come as you are.

    OBITUARY

    CEDAR LUFF - Mr. Joseph B. Whitaker, 86, of Route 1, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a long illness.

    He was born at Indian, Va. and was a son of the late William and Susie Mae Lee Whitaker, both of Tazewell County, Va.

    He was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and former owner of Whitaker's Market at Cedar Bluff. He was a 1933 graduate of Richlands High School, where he was a star football player. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of te Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 of Richlands.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Helen McBrayer Whitaker; one son, James R. Whitaker; and two sisters, Fannie Dean and Alice Luttrell.
    Survivors are: one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs Branch (Frances) McGlothlin of Cedar Bluff; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Hilda Whitaker of Savannah, Georgia; Daughter-in-law, Mrs. Roselma Whitaker of Dublin, Va.; two brothers, Willam Otis Whitaker of Danville, Va., and Charlie Lee Whitaker of Windsor, Conn.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services will be be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands. Interment will follow in the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands. Paulbearers will be James Whitaker, Mack Whitaker, Bill Luttrell, Joseph Whitaker, Gary Wallace, Brent Humphries, and Joseph Michael Whitaker, Members of the Casey-Short Post 9640 of Richlands and the Disabled American Veterans Tazewell County Chapter 31 will conduct military graveside rites.

    Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

    HELEN M. WHITAKER

    Helen M. Whitaker, 82, of Cedar Bluff, died Feb. 14 in a Bristol, TN, nursing home following a lengthy illness.

    She was born in Portsmouth, OH, and was a daughter of the late Charles William and Georgianna Marsh McBrayer, both Ohio natives.

    She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was
    former owner of Whitaker's Market in Cedar Bluff. She was a 1932 graduate of Richlands High School and was a member of
    the Richlands First Christian Church. She was a member of the VFW Post 9640 Ladies Auxiliary of Richlands.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
    one son, James (Jim) Whitaker; four sisters, Mary Campbell,
    Maude Ringstaff, Etta Mae McBrayer and Isabelle Cruise; and two brothers, Ralph and James McBrayer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

    Survivors: husband, J. B. Whitaker of Bristol, TN;
    daughter, Mrs. Branch (Frances) McGlothlin of Cedar Bluff; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Hilda Whitaker of Savannah, GA; daughter-in-law, Roselma Whitaker of Dublin; nine grand children; and nine great-grand children.

    The funeral was conducted Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-
    Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Samuel Altizer
    officiating. Interment followed in the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands.
